I am a 1st generation Ukrainian-American, born in Nebraska USA. As for my now deceased parents, my father was from the village of Kupnovichy (near Sambir, Sambor to some), Lviv Oblast, and my mother was from a village once called Pawshiwka (now called Palashivka...I think), Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine. I speak a broken Ukrainian but understand 'mostly' everything (not entirely fluent); however, my reading is pretty good, but my writing skills are not. I was a trained, professional singer in my earlier years, and learned to play the Bandura, just not nearly as well as these musical artists portrayed here. I love my national instrument's beauty and tone quality and can listen to it forever. I'm totally proud to be Ukrainian!!! Слава Україні - Героям Слава! (Slava Ukrayeenee - Slava Heroyam! ,,, Glory to Ukraine - Glory to the Heroes!)

I am a Pilipino,I love music and I can sing well,I had been in your country last 1994 and 1999 and Ukraine has its own government,as a seaman we. Roamed around from.odessa to Kiev, people are good ,friendly,hard working,and intelligent.peaceful country even it is very cold during winter stevedores are guiding us to go in any part of the country.my tears fall when I saw that people are suffering because of war........,due to the fact that they are peace loving people.

It has persisted since the 14th century, since the attacks on Ukrainization in the 1930s, and through not having a nation to call its own for hundreds of years. Very happy to be able to enjoy the culture of my ancestors today.

No. Even though Mishalow lived there, he was still Ukrainian. You can appreciate music from other places, but in order to preserve cultures, they need to be separate.

I happen to be Ukrainian .born in a DP camp Germany..I learned how to speak Ukrainian and English..and growing up Learned how to play the Bandura but never mastered it like Victor Mishalow..but I've been proud meeting This Bandurist player during the 80s and still frequently see him in Toronto..he also has given me lessons..Fantastic artist and musician..

I had childhood in post soviet Ukraine. We lived in the Russian speaking Eastern Ukraine but I got to hear a lot of bandura in shows snd concerts. Very unique instrument deeply touching the soul.

I think it sounds a lot like those rather ancient, most early forms of a the piano from 18th century or earlier. Harpiscord or Clavicembalo I think it is. Absolutely stunningly beautiful music. I always had a weak spot for harps & harp related instruments, there's so many in the world, like the Kora from NW Africa for example, or the Koto and Gǔzhēng from Japan & China.

Thank you to my great grandmother and namesake Frania of blessed memory (approx. 1895 - 1955) who had the foresight to get herself and my then-5-year-old grandmother out of Kyev and to the United States through Ellis Island nearly a century ago. The Ukraine wasn't a safe place for Jews then, because of the pogroms against them. Of course in subsequent years it only became more horrific, with the Babi Yar massacre by the Nazi SS being perhaps, only the most notorious example. The stories were handed down to me from my grandmother and her own daughter, my mother. However the music here shows the spirit and humanity that Ukrainians, like all people, have. I believe that wherever you go in the world there is music, literature (wheter oral or written) through which people just like you and me can express their hopes and love as well as their fear and sorrow. All these feelings are part of ALL of us. Beautiful harp or bell arrangement here. I think if you know children who are asking questions about what us going on in the Ukraine (in March of 2022) share with them music like this (and other world music) to help them understand our common humanity.

My paternal grandparents were from Lithuania, also invaded by Russians. My father's mother lost her entire family. My maternal gransparents from Russia, near St Petersburg (then Leningrad) did not fare any better, being Jewish. My mother's mother lost all her siblings except one. After coming to this country, my nother's pareents never spoke their native tongue again, refusing my request for them to teach me Russian. What horrors they endured to make them renounce their own culture I can only guess, as they never spoke of it. My father's mother told stories of hiding her husband from the Russian army. Same generation as yours - 1890's to 1960's.

@@adriennekraft2381 yeah, Russia is a prison of nations... Life of Jews was very difficult in Russian Empire, especially towards the end of its existence. The Baileys case is a good example. It was the same with others, btw. My surname has a Russian ending, because my Ukrainian ancestors were sent to Siberia and surname was russified

1. Виникла українська мова однозначно раніше за російську, німецьку і турецьку. За даними вченого Василя Кобилюха, українська мова сформувалася ще в Х-ІV тисячоліттях до нашої ери й походить вона із санскриту. А перша згадка українських слів була у 448 р. нашої ери. Тоді візантійський історик Пріск Панійський перебував на території сучасної України у таборі гунського володаря Аттіли і записав слова “мед” і “страва”. 2. Українська мова - одна з наймилозвучніших мов світу. 1934 року в Парижі на лінгвістичному конгресі провідні фахівці визнали українську мову третьою з-поміж усіх мов (після французької та фарсі) за мелодійністю, лексичним і фразеологічним багатством, величезними словотвірними можливостями, синтаксичною гнучкістю. У Швейцарії на схожому форумі, де головними критеріями оцінки були евфонічна система мови, її мелодійність і милозвучність, українську мову було названо другою після італійської. 3. Відомого письменника Івана Котляревського назвають основоположником нової української мови. Саме після видання «Енеїди» Котляревського українську мову офіційно визнали літературною. 4. Сучасна українська мова має близько 256 тис. слів. Найбільша кількість слів в українській мові починається на літеру «П». Натомість найрідше українці вживають літеру «Ф», здебільшого в запозичених словах 5. Українська мова має спільну лексику з декількома мовами сусідніх країн: 84% - білоруська; 70% - польська; 68% - сербська; 62% - російська. 6. Наша мова особливо багата на зменшувально-пестливі слова. Навіть слово «вороги» в українській мові має зменшувальну форму - ВОРОЖЕНЬКИ. 7. В Україні є особливі слова - паліндроми. Це такі собі «дзеркальні» слова або вирази, які можна читати як зліва направо, так і навпаки. Як приклад - «Я несу гусеня». 8. Наша мова також дуже багата на синоніми. У виданні «Короткий словник синонімів української мови» подано 4279 синонімічних рядів. Найбільшу кількість синонімів має слово «бити» - аж 45 синонімів, а «горизонт» - 12 синонімів. 9. До середини ХІХ століття українську мову найчастіше називали «руською мовою». «Русинською мовою» вперше українську мову («руську мову») назвали поляки (це польський прикметник від попередньої самоназви українців «русини»). 10. В українській мові, на відміну від решти східнослов‘янських мов, іменник має 7 відмінків, один з яких - кличний. Крім нашої кличний відмінок існує ще в трьох мовах - латині, грецькій та санскритській граматиках.

Beautiful music speak to the soul, l love it, this instrument is like a small arpa and the sond remain me the tradicional Venezuela instrument the Arpa and the Cuatro. I love play music and l would like to get one Bandura, it's fantastic.
