I had an issue once with the standard exhaust valves in a 2.0 Pinto engine in a transit. The clearances kept closing up, only on the exhausts, so I pulled the head, and found that there were recesses in the centres of the valve heads, and stretch marks on the stems. It must have been a bad batch of valves from the factory. Luckily we caught it before one of them stretched to the point of breaking.

This Ford engine when first produced had a severe camshaft failure problem. The Cams had a problem and the oil feed bar in the head got blocked. The fix change cam, change oil bar, change filter and oil. I did quite a few, as a customer drove into the yard you could hear clack clack clack yea know the problem. There where some crappy fixes involving roller rocker but only real fix was Cam/Oil Bar/filter and oil. Normal way of doing it was to remove head because camshaft comes out from the back and the car body is in the way. There was a garage in Watford where I was working at the time had a template used inside the car and they cut a hole through the car front bulkhead/firewall and slid the camshaft out into the car and fitted the new one same way. They could do the job in two hours. They had a repair plate with mastic for the hole. Warranty money from Fords was Eight hours with head gasket and associated components so they made a killing on that one. Other garages would take the car there to join the queue and split the difference. Two washers with neoprene on them go under the bolts for the front of the rocker cover, the slotted holes or you get a leak, do them up last. Make sure plugs are in first you know why, I dropped a bolt and looked for ages down the pit for it. I could not find it. With a torch and slowly turning engine by crankshaft bolt I found the bolt in the cylinder on the piston. Phew, taught me plugs out, compression test, new plugs in. If it can it will.

What this vid, and the on the Golf engine has taught me: keep my bloody fingers out of the bloody engine! Seriously, you've demonstrated that pitfalls abound, and an engineer/mechanic needs to know about them AHEAD of the engine work. Still, it's fun finding out these things, and seeing an expert at work. Thank you, and keep the good work. I still dont understand *why* the front valve on the Pinto engine is set differently than the rest from the factory. What does that accomplish, save blown engines for the unwary or the untrained? (Like myself, I suppose.)

I work Fords with cast iron heads over here in the (Ford V engines made in Cologne) and no separate guide and 8mm stems and its routine to bore the holes oversize..and press in a bronze or a cast iron guide...then size it..I prefer guides sized to accept the PC (positive control) stem seals from originally VW watercooled engines--which dimesnionally are identical to the exhaust stem seals on YBs for 8mm stems..Same color even..VW 16v for 7mm stems such as YB intake, Volvo 16v Redblocks... Guide lines will do but I wonder why you can't install guides..Only 6 to 8 US dollars per guide>Then you're back to 9mm stems like Gawd intended. Plentiful and cheap for 1 piece stainless forged valves.

What you should do is get hold of Isaacs keys one day and put a speed limiter on it if you can, i did it with a mates Renault Master i stuck a 55mph limit on it but unbeknown to me the next day he was taking his kids to a motocross race meeting and he was pulling his caravan any way safe to say when he got home he came straight round asked me to have a look at it, i couldn't stop laughing, when i told him he was fuming and relieved at the same time 😂
