A polygraph is only useful once a baseline is established. If one establishes a false baseline, then all subsequent results can be deceitful. That is one of the reasons why polygraphs are not admissible in most Courts of law.

My first two engineering jobs after university required security clearances, and getting those required polygraph tests. Two interesting-ish stories: During the first one, the test administrator abruptly changed from the kindly grandpa to accusing me of hiding a Russian national (this was back during the cold war). Scared the snot out of me. During the last one, the administrator said I wasn't breathing fast enough (respiration rate not within his guidelines). (I used to be a long distance runner.) I swear this is true - he said I had to breathe faster, but breathe normal. FWIW, I passed both of those exams.

Penn and Teller had a show called "Bullshit" that debunked stuff including lie detectors. They showed that the machines are used as a tool to browbeat suspects into confessions, rather than any conclusive machine results. It was a great episode if you can find it.

Everyone knows they don't actually give an answer about whether or not someone is telling the truth... Well actually, not everyone knows that... But anyway, yes they are absolute bullshit. Even the man who invented the polygraph later said it didn't work and shouldn't be used. All it does is read involuntary muscle movements and monitor sweating and other things, things associated with lying... But that doesn't prove anything at all. Many things can make your body do those things, especially when you are nervous and of course anyone accused of doing something bad is going to be nervous, probably even more so if they are actually innocent. Those polygraph technicians are actual scumbags. They are fully aware the machine is bullshit and have no problem putting people's fate in it without any concern for what happens to them. They make up statistics about how they are 99% accurate how in reality how would they ever know that? Isn't the whole point that you don't know if someone is lying or not in the first place? The real number is more like 50% accurate which basically means it has the same accuracy as flipping a coin for the answer and less than just reading body language and normal human intuition. It's good that in most places polygraph results are not admissible in a courtroom but that doesn't mean they haven't fucked up people's live a million times over. My mind even goes to the Maury Povich show where they would polygraph test everyone about everything. I really have to wonder how many people on that show were branded liars and cheaters when they really weren't. Probably not many really but there has to be at least a few.

@landibear6509
@landibear6509 7 ай бұрын
I say this with all due respect to Grant but it is sad to see an episode where his brain got scanned knowing he would eventually pass from an undetected aneurism. Also, I don't know how, but a place I worked at for years did random polygraphs on all of the staff due to the nature of the job and the questions would be random too. I sort of proved that there could be a glitch with the polygraph rather than me actually trying to manipulate it. I was asked once if I had ever abused a company petrol card. To put that into perspective, that would mean that I would have to have the use of a company vehicle and be able to drive. I did not have the use of any of the vehicles and I can't drive a car at all. Came back as a lie when I said no. I was telling the truth and afterwards told the polygraphist when he gave me the results. The same polygraphist told me once that his friends, family and neighbors would always ask him to polygraph them almost as a party trick and he kept on refusing until one day after being asked repeatedly he gave in and said he would. He warned them that he was going to keep it lighthearted for reasons that should be obvious. While testing one of his friends the friend's wife jumped in out of nowhere and asked jokingly if her husband ever cheated on her. He responded no. Needless to say, I would not be retelling this story if the outcome was not uncomfortable, to say the least.

I am sure even before watching this episode that all the lie detector results would be accurate and conclusive. If you do show it otherwise, then it may lead them to show a way to people that it is indeed cheatable..

Remember that when they were going to test out credit card chips for one episode, the card companies gave them a stern warning of "don't you dare". Another episode had to be scrubbed due to some... "unexpected" results they had to report to the government. The show was not above hiding inconvenient results if outside pressure was applied.

@MrMarinus18
@MrMarinus18 7 ай бұрын
That they are beatable is not really a myth. That's why they aren't considered evidence in a court of law. Polygraph tests are used in investigations to increase accuracy. They have about a 90% accuracy rate so it can make the investigation cheaper by making it more likely you're looking in the right places. But it's not considered evidence in a court of law. Another major problem is that humans are very imperfect. Very often eye witnesses are mistaken or believe they saw something that they didn't or misremember something. It's hard to distinquish memory and imagination.

Furthermore, some changes require injecting a special liquid into the blood specifically to make the 'blood' visible to it. He didn't have a scan to check his veins. @kikixchannel
@kikixchannel 6 ай бұрын
No, we can't. Brain aneurysm most likely wouldn't show on this test (he didn't have a liquid injected into his blood to make them visible). Furthermore, a medical scan of the brain scans it differently, for longer, layer by layer. A scan like this, which probably took a few minutes at most, wouldn't show anything of value, especially if no one actually looked for anything wrong.
