In the movie "Rounders" the main character at the start of the movie played a game with every cent he had. He proceeded to lose to a bad beat and lost everything he had and went broke basically.

Would you apply this 20 BI-rule for micro stakes as well? I am a winning player in the micros, and I started playing 10nl with ~120 bucks, (12 BIs). I am now at 200 and already considering taking shots at 20nl as soon as I reach 220. Am I forcing the issue or is that ok considering the weaker opposition in the micros?

Michel Smiffi if you are a rec player who can/will add to your bankroll with life money if need be, then you can certainly get away with shot taking early on.

Why is it that I have 40-70 buy-in downswings in 6max midstakes every single month? If i played with a 20buyin BRM, i would have gone broke around 15 times. I played around 1 million hands so far, and had 7-8 of these sharp 40+ BI downswings with only 2-3 similar upswings(with these, im breakeven, but i believe i should be at around 1bb/100). I am now in a 50+ buyin downswing in just 50k hands, losing all my previous winnings this year.

hi i've been trying to get to 25 nl.ive built up to $600 and take a shot and lose like 6 buy in's,this has happened twice and also after these two shots experienced a downswing at 10 NL :( rebuilding at the moment again and have just under $400. the last shot was recent enough and hit an 11 buy in downer at 10 NL. when you yourself have say $500,what way would you go about your shot?just use 2 buy in's and if you lose that drop down and recover? playing zoom on stars by the way
@splitsuit
@splitsuit 10 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to hear about the recent shot =( With $500 I would be taking 2BI shots at 25NL during the soft times (Friday nights, weekends, etc). If I lose the 2BI ($50), then I go back to 10NL and rebuild until $500 again and then try another shot. Rinse/repeat It took me 3 shots before I got to 100NL...so keep you head up!

@splitsuit
@splitsuit 7 жыл бұрын
I like stop losses since most people tend to tilt (whether they realize it or not) when they are down 3+ buyins. I dislike stop-wins because if you are beating up on a table of weak players you want to stretch that sessions as long as possible.

Are those numbers related to just one table or it doesn't matter? I mean, do I have to have a different BR structure if I play 4 tables?
@ThePokerBank
@ThePokerBank 10 жыл бұрын
The number of tables shouldn't influence things a ton unless: 1. You have a tilt issue where you may just spew stacks across all of your tables. In which case, playing 4 tables on a 20BI bankroll risks a 20% BR spew...which would be horrible 2. You are trying to play 24 tables on a 20BI bankroll =) It's safer to have more buy-ins available, but playing 4 tables with 20BI can be totally fine.
@exc17ed
@exc17ed 9 жыл бұрын
I never understood why it is massively recommended that you have 20 buy ins for the level, this is a joke...i am winning at 6bb/100 and have had 10+buy in downswings every month... I completely agree with the video!

@michelcharbonnier7603 9 жыл бұрын
exc17ed Wow, what stakes are you playing? 10 BI-downswings happen, but every month? I am a 29/23 guy and I had such a downswing maybe twice in two years
@exc17ed
@exc17ed 9 жыл бұрын
Michel Smiffi You did not play enough then. Google poker variance calculator, input a winrate of 6bb/100 with 65 standart deviation which is for FR playing TAG(yours would be like 100) and simulate 100 000 hands, then you`ll see that 20BI swings are possible to occur and 10BI are fairly common.
@michelcharbonnier7603
@michelcharbonnier7603 9 жыл бұрын
exc17ed You are probably right, I just passed the 100k hands mark a few weeks ago (in like 16 or 18 months), so I am certainly not a high (or even medium) volume player. How many hands do you play per month?
@exc17ed
@exc17ed 9 жыл бұрын
per month i play much more than you play in 18 months... getting up the stakes is 50% skill and 50% volume, you will never move like that, also you are waaay to loose for fr, get your fundamentals right and go up the stakes playing at least more than 20 tables or just play recreationaly, playing this low number of hands will get you literally a few months downswing and you will quit poker

Question. Would really be helpful if you could answer. I am almost 21 and take poker very seriously. My plan once I turn 21 is to start playing live $120 nl tournaments. I would deff consider myself an above average player but was wondering how I should go about bankroll management strictly for tournament play. Also would like to start small and work my way up to one day hopefully play to support myself. Just wanted to know your thought on this and how to manage bankroll for tournament play. Thanks!

I think, this proposed scheeme is way to aggressive. For most poker players it will feel devastating to have to move down more than one limit and/or lose more than half their roll. In the example we have lost 98% of our bankroll, and for all practical intents and purposes this is the same as going broke.
