On Sunday we celebrated our one year anniversary of our first RCWA cleanup at Bannon Island. After decades of occupation by illegal camps, floodwaters removed all campers from this “Nature Study Area”. After 32 cleanup events and 154,500 pounds of trash removed by RCWA volunteers, trash is now hard to find. When we completed our last cleanup in 2023, some of the trash was hidden by grape vines. We knew where to look, and continued where we left off.
28 proud Badgers collected about 3,500 pounds of hidden trash into 4 large piles, before the spring growth devoured it again. Fabian, Julia, and Nelson all received their overdue Badger patches.
Sacramento County Regional Parks was there with their skid steer to fill in a large bunker camp that RCWA cleaned last year. This long established camp had two stairways, a roof, and a built in fireplace before floods covered it under feet of water. We were happy to finally help restore this area.
RCWA volunteers are proud to be instrumental in taking back our American River Parkway for all to enjoy. 💚
