Many people don’t realize that people have made contact with a 5W Handheld radio and directional antenna from the US to South Africa on a good propagation day. Elevation is key for radio signals.

I stumbled here as I'm looking at using this radio for a cycling team radio. From your part 1 video, is the programming necessary to get functionality out of the box or just an added bonus to the hobbyist? I am keen to have a fiddle and learn more about the radios as I am a techie, but it looked like a scary learning curve when I'll end up being tech support on ~10 radios :O As you seem knowledgeable, I'm also wondering if you could see any problems with that use? Basically we'll be sticking them in a pocket on our backs and running an ear piece, probably needing about 500m range to keep most of our riders in touch with each other and the team car. Maybe using a more powerful but portable unit for the team car (they'll always be a rental car).

Well it has backing because of the area antenna repeater but without it from town to town communication what you think it's the greater distance that it's signal can reached ??? I think perhaps well 5 miles & without any hiss on flat terrain but through of a concrete building with so low transmitting power. It's aim is so difficult & weak unless is placed closed to a window & the ionization of the atmosphere is good to permit this happening but 5 miles of a great signal as clear as loud in all directions it's great & useful to pulled out of the crowd .

@joecachia24 жыл бұрын
Repeaters are higher power transmitters/receivers placed in high locations for use by other radios. They take someone's relatively weak signal on freq A and re transmit back outwards on freq B at much higher power ( hence longer distances. ). Your radio needs to have the frequencies reversed ie , you send on freq A and listen on freq B . If you manage to reach the repeater , it will send back , so you know you have reached it . You dont really need someone to answer . The repeater's 'answer' so to speak is enough. In some of these tests you can hear the beeps and tones the repeater sends back. NOTE ! Using repeaters normally requires an appropriate HAM licence.

VHF / UHF works best at line-of-sight. Range depends heavily on the terrain and whatever structures are in between ( high buildings , hills , mountains etc ) . That is why repeaters are used to extend ranges. The higher up you are the better the range will be. With nothing in between , even 0.5w will go for miles.

btw The Baofeng T1 is NOT the dual band radio and it is NOT designed for VHF operation! Do not blame people here and even yourself and read the spec of radio first. The finals + matching circuit + antenna is designed for UHF operation together. So if you are going to change antenna then you have to matching the finals to the impedance of this new antenna in order to protect finals against the high SWR and high currect and overheating etc.

Ringway Manchester really new with radio, bought 2pcs for event communication, it work so well today. But let me just ask, why do we need to program it for? Sorry man, zero knowledge in radio
@RingwayManchester6 жыл бұрын
Ok, the reason is that they come with test frequencies in, and they're not legal to transmit on so you're technically breaking the law if you transmit on those frequencies as your country most likely won't allow transmission on there without a license or type approved radio. So it's best to just buy a cable and programme, the other caviat to that is that the power output or ERP might also exceed acceptable/legal levels for your country. It's a minefield and some countries really crack down on such things so be careful!
