I saw Streisand at Madison Square Garden in the early-2000s, and the people behind me wouldn’t stop chatting. I turned around and said, “Ya know, I’m sure you paid a lotta money for these tix, so let’s all try to get our money’s worth.” And they did shut up, for awhile anyway.

This was at Hyde Park. We called her back and she sang this wonderful tribute to Judy Garland as her final song. She was in front of a crowd of 75,000 Brits and we loved every moment. Notice the teapot on the table. Periodically, she poured herself a “pretend” cup of tea. Thank you Barbra for a wonderful evening and for making many dreams come true. We love you 💕

Yes, Garland at her peak was untouchable. But let's also be real. Garland could no longer sing this by the time she was 45, her voice was so shot to pieces by drugs, booze and self-abuse. Streisand is 77 here, and still sounding sensational. I get why some like to make Judy a martyr and shroud even her flawed performances in a kind of sainthood. "Look how she suffered and flagellated herself in the name of art". But there's also something a bit icky in revelling in the epic tragedy of her slow demise. Personally, I'm more uplifted by the epic endurance of a survivor like Streisand.

don't understand the people saying she can't sing anymore; the woman sounds remarkable in any case and it is all the more impressive when you consider her age! if anything the whole mythos around her works to her detriment, as evidenced by the crowd. she's in a position where she's so known her work isn't allowed to speak for itself anymore--she's a pop cultural product to be deconstructed rather than the brilliant singer and actor she was recognized to be when she was just coming into her fame. too much of an icon for her own good. truly fuck this crowd though, she has earned more respect than that.

Barbra is no entertainer, she has zero stage presence. Barbra is a singer just like whitney that had zero control of an audience with there presence ,its something you need to be born with. I've seen Barbra and whitney at there best in concert and it was extraordinary incredible something I'll never forget, but judy on stage was a religious experience, judy owned you on stage and you felt vulnerable and broken. Two different experiment between them two.

Hmmm. Magnificent voice and performance. Thank you for the great sound. The video, not great. And the noise in the audience, and their inability to wait until the end of the singing to make a ruckus and therefore miss her nuanced and subtle phrasing, is everyone’s loss. I'm not sure why Barbra keeps saying she and Judy were friends. There is no evidence the two divas were ever in the same room at the same time after Barbra's guest appearance on Judy's show in 1963. Talent-wise, they were equals, but no two women were ever so different from each other.
@jaf8771
@jaf8771 7 ай бұрын
Did you hear her say that on the Howard Stern interview here on KZfaq? She did say it on that show, but I questioned if that was true because i never heard her speak of their friendship or anything about it in the tabloids, media, etc. (And I believe I've seen every interview of Streisand's') I do know that Liza first told Judy about Barbra after seeing her sing in a club and then she was later on Judy's television show. When Howard asks Barb if she were the greatest singer who ever lived, Barb said "Who, me?" I wonder if that response was genuine. I guess she was implying that Judy was a better singer than her.
@akrenwinkle
@akrenwinkle 7 ай бұрын
@@jaf8771 Babs started invoking Judy's name when she added "Over the Rainbow" to her set list. I forgot when, but it's been a long while. I heard her once tell the audience that Judy was "one of the greatest singers who ever lived" so I think we know what that means. Barbra's not modest, and she has the right not to be. In discussing her recent 992 page book, she claimed Judy was a friend and came to a party Barbra had at her apt. in 1968, and at that party Judy told her, "Don't let them do to you what they did to me." That strange quote actually goes back to 1963 and is often mentioned when their iconic duet is discussed. I have no idea who "them" is and even in 1963, I can't imagine anyone "doing anything" to Babs. I don't believe the 1968 party story. If the two women ever met since 1963, there would be some mention of it somewhere in the whole catalog of Judy books. There isn't.

Thanks for reminding me because she did say this "one of the greatest singers who ever lived" just before she sang Over the Rainbow during the little concert, she had in her backyard to raise money for something.... don't remember what. I have this on DVD. I still wonder why she would fabricate these stories about Judy, party, etc. What would be the point in doing so. I just purchased that book as a Christmas present for my sister. Amazon had missed reviews.... some claiming it needed to be condensed into something readable and not so many pages. @@akrenwinkle

@@jaf8771 Judy's condition in 1968 was no secret, especially since Judy and Barbra had the same fans and colleagues, and Judy's problems often made headlines. I think Barbra wants to give the impression that she gave Judy the opportunity to meet and ask for help. As much as I love Judy, I wouldn't have invited her to a party, worrying about her bringing a new gay boyfriend, or making a spectacle, being high and/or drunk. I wouldn't blame Barbra for keeping her distance, but I believe she shouldn't have made up the party story.
@jaf8771
@jaf8771 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the insights......they make perfect sense. I just can't get over the fact that Barb purposely lied to Howard saying they were "Good friends" and in her book. Isn't that funny...the last thing I would have ever thought about was Barb helping Judy with her problems.... never crossed my mind. Probably because I figured during that time what sort of experiences did Barb have at that young age to give advice to anybody...let alone, Judy. I remember in one interview the guy asks Barb if she was the greatest singer who ever lived and she said, " Well you know, I am more than just a singer...I'm a wife and mother as well". So, she really didn't answer the question leaving me to think that she thought she was the greatest. Anyway, Barbs voice at her last concert in Hyde Park was pretty bad with the hoarseness. At her age now.... I would almost bet she can't sing at all. However, I think she's doing another album in February...another duet thingy. Of course, with all the electronics they have these days using autotune, or whatever, they can probably make her voice sound great. To be honest, it makes me extremely sad that the old Streisand, and that perfect voice, is no more. @@akrenwinkle

On reflection, and after reading some other comments, I think It was... okay. Fine. She got through it. Now, as I mentioned in my other comment, if she’d covered it when she was in her “Funny Girl” years, it would have blown the roof off. And, I agree with another’s comment that, in concert, she’s “just” a singer. Lackadaisical. While singing, she just wanders around the stage. No focus. No ACTING. No PERFORMING. She saves all that for the screen. And, her early TV shows. NOW, as talented as she is, she just sort of... shows up.

Watching Garland live was a once in a lifetime experience, an emotional roller coaster you would never forget. I’ve seen Streisand and Whitney Huston in concert and it was grate/excellent but they couldn’t hold an audience and brake them in peace’s like Judy could. Can’t touch Garland on this one. Sorry.

I'd say she beats her as Garland couldn't actually stand up to sing it let alone hit a top note.

Reaction to the title: What "masterclass"?? In this clip she is reduced to a sad shadow of herself. She should really retire from singing.

Vocal cords age. But she is 77 here. And she sounds better than any of the young auto tuned no talent girls today. Show some respect. What do you sound like?

@@garyphillips7518 No need to be triggered. I love her. But she really MUST retire from live performances. Unlike YOU, Streisand herself actually AGREES with me!!!!! She herself has just recently announced that she will only do studio recordings and retire from any kind of live performance!! There you go! The woman you wanted to defend actually AGREES with what I said.

@@cheric35 😂Sorry! I didn't mean to be cruel. I'm actually an ardent fan of Streisand. It just saddens me to see big stars missing the right moment to retire and then embarrass themselves. It's just sad to watch.

This one didn't work 25 yrs. ago at the age of 54 (when she first sang it), and it sure as hell ain't working now with her 80 yr. old voice (and total lack of power).

Scott Pangburn It was... okay. If she’d covered it when she was in her “Funny Girl” years, it would have blown the roof off. I agree that, in concert, she’s “just” a singer. Lackadaisical. While singing, she just wanders around the stage. No focus. No ACTING. No PERFORMING. She saves all that for the screen. And, her early TV shows. NOW, as talented as she is, she just sort of... shows up.

I say shame on Barbara for attempting this Garland classic. Everything about it was disastrous for me.
