Yes, it was an intentional and cold decision. I think the crew would react differently if their death was a genuine “accident” (like with the Cyclops, when they unknowingly ran into this danger and many people died, but Ody did everything in his power to save them. And then doxxed himself-), but here he intentionally sacrificed them “without a second thought”

If you think about it, Odysseus making the choice he did in Thunder Bringer ( 1:05:50) isn’t surprising: he was given the same choice and made the same decision in The Horse and The Infant and Just A Man. Nah, I keep hearing this argument, but there are days in between the Sirens and Scylla. Keeping live sirens that long is just asking for a high risk with no guarantee of success (Scylla might prefer the men, or the Siren might just kill more sailors in the process. Not to mention the constant threat of a hypnotic voice). And keeping the sirens' dead bodies would just lead to rot. This just isn't the logical solution people think it is.

The reason why Odysseus was not earwaxed in the original story is because Circe warning him made him curious so he had to listen and the crew tied him to the mast. In the original also Scylla (c-la for the english and Ski-la for the Greek) just couldn't be killed and they had to row fast past her lair because she was hidden very far out of reach for them to do anything. And the sirens are originally birds with women head not weird kelpie-mermaids that are Scottish afaik. Edit:Odysseus knew the cost here and set them up and didn't tell his crew.

Okay, so I was relistening to Scylla and Mutiny on Spotify, and something that barely even registered but now looking back on it is amazing because the last time they manage their “Full Speed Ahead” motif cohesively was before Odysseus sacrificed six of his men, but after they start trying to row away from the island after killing the cow It's like the men are trying to perform the "Full Speed Ahead" motif, but unlike before when they were all together, now it's completely disorganized and frantic, especially with Odysseus yelling "FASTER" really sounding like he was just screaming at them instead of giving orders in the background. Gives me the vibe of them no longer obeying him from respect, but pure panic, hence while they're all disorganized and everything feels incredibly off rhythm. I also like the detail that Eurylocus has always been backed up by the crew, but even now in Mutiny when he led the crew to overthrow Odysseus, sure they stabbed him and knocked him out, but the second the stakes were raised, they immediately fell into line desperately trying to follow Odysseus with Eurylocus not even fighting because even after they rose their Mutiny, he was still their “Captain” not Eurylocus!

The thing abt the Eurylochus, Eurylochus, Odysseus, Odysseus chants was, in my interpretation, when they say Eurylochus, they're trying to stop him from doing something stupid, but when they see zero hesitation from Odysseus, they chant Odysseus to like stop him too, but halfway they realize he's ACTUALLY willing to kill Eurylochus to get home, hence the line “There is no price he won't pay”

After getting through Scylla, Odysseus wanted to skip Helios' island knowing that those cattle are trouble, but Eurylochus, backed by the crew, insisted that they rest there, outnumbered, Ody had to concede... However, a storm trapped them on the island. Days passed, and they were running low on Circe's goodies, and since there was a storm surrounding them, I guess that's why they couldn't even fish.

I disagree, Ody makes stupid decisions too. Not killing the cyclops is the original issue that starts all the other ones. Because the made the god of the sea hate him..while they’re on a ship. As a huge fan of leitmotifs I'm happy whenever old motives get reused and spinned around, but in Epic specifically I feel like (can't tell if purposely or not since I've never watched the behind-the-scenes shorts) that the frequence with which these instances occur and execute callbacks solidifies the almost cyclical nature of Odysseus' journey. Always moving towards his home and always forced to change course; every time he thinks he's on a straight line to Ithaca something pulls him out again. It's neat!

Interesting enough the sacrifices are portrayed differently in tone and I LOVE IT: With Scylla, the 6 sacrifices are seen as necessary because, the only other option was an island with either a constant whirlpool or turbulent waters surrounding in. Bear in mind Poseidon still has it out for Odysseus so sailing to THAT island is basically giving his entire crew to the sea god. So the math is simple: 6 men or the crew In it’s entirety. With Zeus, the sacrifice is seen as something that could have been avoided had a number of things not happened, all of which were caused by Eurylochus: 1. Eurylochus had opened the bag of winds given to them. That bag could have been used to skip Scylla and, possibly, bypass the need to sacrifice 6 men in the first place. 2. Eurylochus staged a mutiny over the one time Odysseus could see no other way out of sacrifice, despite being the first person to suggest cut and running, leaving others to die. 3. Eurylochus killed the cow of the Sun God, despite being PLEADED with by Odysseus to not do it and TOLD THIS WAS THE PLACE OF THE SUN GOD. those three pieces of information, two things are made clear: 1. If Eurylochus remains a part of the crew/ alive, he will continue to be a detriment to the journey. 2. Eurylochus cannot be allowed to be a detriment to the journey. Capped off by Eurylochus’ statement of “but we’ll die…” almost defeatedly. He knows what Odysseus is going to do. Deep down, he also knows he deserves it because, in his own words, “If you want all the power, you must carry all the blame.”

All the characters shown so far in the Odyssey Humans Odysseus - Oh-diss-E-us - King of Ithaca, husband to Penelope, father to Telemachus, Main character in the story, protege to Athena. Captain of the crew. Eurylochus - U-rilla-cuss - Second-in-command to the crew, voice of the crew. He causes most of the conflict with the self-servient nature of the crew. Polites - Paw-leh-tees - Navigator, voice of reason, echoes the theme of being welcoming and kind to people. Died in the Cyclops Saga. Penelope - Pen-L-O-PEE - Queen of Ithaca, wife to Odysseus, mother to Telemachus, one of the driving factors of why Odysseus needs to get home. Telemachus - Tuh-leh-muh-cuss - Prince of Ithaca, son to Odysseus and Penelope. also another driving factors of why Odysseus needs to get home. Is assumably almost a grown boy in this current timeline as he was a child in the beginning. Elphenor - L-fin-nor - such an irrelevant crew member he is only mentioned once in the captions, he dies randomly at the palace of Circe because he got drunk. Perimedes - Pear-eh-me-deez(nuts) - Crewmember, drives the sword into Odysseus in Mutiny. Tiresias - Tie-ree-see-us - Prophet that is met in the Underworld Saga in the song "No Longer You." He is dead but was still human before he died so I counted him. Anticlea - an-tee-clee-uh - Mother to Odysseus, is seen in the Underworld (song) and sings her last thoughts, singing how she was waiting for Odysseus this whole time. She died due to grieving. Her actual name is never really mentioned. Gods (AS SEEN SO FAR) Athena - Uh-thee-nuh - Virgin Goddess of wisdom and strategic warfare, matron of Athens and the weave. Seen in the Troy Saga in Warrior of the Mind and My Goodbye. She is the one who built Odysseus into the warrior he is from a young age. Assumed to also still be subtly guiding in behind the scenes. Zeus - Zooss - King of the Gods, Thunder, Lightning, of the Heavens, seen in the Horse and the Infant as he tells Odysseus to kill the son of Hector (the infant). Also seen here in Thunderbringer killing all of the crew except Odysseus. Known for his fooling around with women. Poseidon - Poh-sye-den - Brother to Zeus, known as one of the Big Three between him, Zeus and Hades. He is the god of the ocean, horses, water, earthquakes. Father to Polyphemus (the Cyclops) He shows up in Ruthlessness where he slaughters most of Odysseus's crew due to him blinding Polyphemus. Drives home the idea that in order to survive Odysseus needs to become more of a monster. Hermes - Her-meez - God of thieves, travelers, roads, merchants, cunningness, commerce, speed, wit, language, oration, messages. the "Messenger God" as he is the one of the two who delivers the word of the Gods, he is also the one typically most immersed with human interaction. He is also Odysseus's great-grandfather, which is why he probably also assisted him in "Wouldn't you Like?" in Circe's Saga. I believe it was also that he is Circe's ex boyfriend? Circe - Sir-see - Enchantress foremost, but technically a goddess no less, but I believe they wrote her out as a goddess due to a line they're going to use in a later song. Circe is the daughter to Helios, who is the Sun God mentioned at the end of Mutiny. Circe is i suppose the "queen" of Aeaea, the island that they're on in the Circe Saga. She turns Odysseus's men into pigs as they threaten her nymphs that she has come to live with, which then is beaten by Odysseus with Hermes's intervention. Circe gives him the knowledge to seek out Tiresias. Helios - Heel-lee-o-ss - the Sun God, also known as a titan, as Apollo takes his place as the Sun God, or at least Helios is the embodiment of the sun. Circe is his daughter. He has a home with cattle dedicated to him. Where-then after Eurylochus and his men kill the cattle out of hunger, Helios asks papa Zeus to kill them all. Aeolus - A-ol-uss - God(dess) of the Winds. Appears in the Storm Saga. Odysseus asks them to help the crew along their way, in which they agree to help as long as Odysseus doesn't open the bag of wind given to them. Odysseus agrees, which then creates distrust to the crewmembers as they believe Odysseus was lying and there was treasure within the bags. Then Eurylochus opens the bag, which creates the winds that push them into Poseidon's clutches. Others Polyphemus - Paw-lee-fee-muss - also known as the Cyclops, has the whole Cyclops Saga. The son of Poseidon. He is blinded as Odysseus's attempt to protect him and his crew without killing another soul. Where, in hubris, Odysseus tells the Cyclops his name, which angers Athena. Which then has her leave Odysseus as he lacks what she taught him in wisdom. Which also then has Poseidon hunt Odysseus. Lotus Eaters - Low-tuss - Originally just a island-nation of people addicted to eating a certain fruit which is called a Lotus (but the actual origin is unknown as the Lotus we know today isn't something you exactly eat) the Lotus in question however makes those who eat it be dominated by the fruit. In EPIC, I am not sure what they were actually supposed to be originally, but animatics I believe popularized the idea that the Lotus Eaters were these little furry creatures who were really cute and chill. The Lotus Eaters give the crew guidance on where to find food after Polites gets Odysseus to open up his boundaries about these little guys as they posed no harm. They are also given kegs of the Lotus "wine." The Lotus wine is used to make the Cyclops fall asleep. Sirens - Sye-renz - A monster that has kind of created a derogatory perception of women, but that's neither here or there. Sirens were known for luring sailors to their deaths with their song that charmed them. While Homer never explicitly describing what they really were. They were originally thought to be bird-like in form. While later on in later Greek culture/romanization, they were seen as half-woman half-serpent which is how they appear here. Odysseus's crew sees an empty boat and spot the mermaid-like creatures luring sailors to their deaths. Which then they get beeswax to cover the sound in their ears. Which then they attract the Sirens to them and Odysseus distracts the sirens long enough for their men to get the upper-hand and slaughter them all. In the original myth, Odysseus ties himself to the front of the boat and doesn't have beeswax in his ears so he doesn't get lured to his death. Scylla - Sill-luh - Scylla is a bit iffy when it comes to her origins as it all is discussed later after the myth, as Scylla mainly represents a crag which is treacherous to sailors. Scylla a monster with 6 dog heads connected to her "loins..." and 12 feet She is similar to the sirens in this retelling as she has a melodic voice that connects to the motif that Odysseus is becoming a monster and she relates to Odysseus. It could be inferred that Odysseus meant to sacrifice his men to the monster as he tells them to light six torches, which they do, and six men die due to the fact he says "Scylla requires a sacrifice," back in "Suffering". (the number six appears in the original myth as well, but Circe is the one telling Odysseus to go through this strait of Scylla, she says "better off losing six men then the whole fleet!") which could also go with that he meant to kill these six men as it was the same time that Eurylochus was telling him he was the one who betrayed him by opening the bag of wind Aeolus gave him. With the lines Scylla sings as well it seems like she is a profiteer of chaos causing this distrust between the crew and Odysseus. Scylla is also seen as a "naiad" which is a water nymph, who was cursed by Amphitrite, as Scylla and Poseidon bedded eachother, similar to the medusa myth. This was a later perception made by a Byzantine scholar. A similar tale made by romans (Hyginus) was also created but with different figures. Scylla was also a monster that Homer did not explicitly go into detail with.

Okay so a piano can be heard in suffering (I didn’t really notice if it was present in the other songs) but thunder bringer ended with what i heard is (spoiler ig? Telemachus’ lullaby) so I think Athena has been watching Odysseus the whole time and she finally witnessed him becoming the monster so she’ll help him in the next saga (wisdom saga) . All this is generally a guess and from the snippets of unreleased songs that i have heard and yea! I haven’t read the Odyssey.

Fun fact: Zeus is the only god so far who hasn't had his name mentioned in the songs he's a part of. Athena, Hermes, Poseidon, Circe, and Aeolus all have either had their names called out by a character or in the chorus, but not Zeus. All he has is the thunder. Also the piano motif at the end is either the same or similar to the one at the end of "My Goodbye" where Athena is saying "one day you might hear what I'm saying, one day you might understand"

A headcanon that I've seen and fully accepted into my own from this saga is that Telemachus is transmasc and outside of just being a "monster", the fact that the siren dared to misgender his son, is why Odysseus' lines/actions in Different Beast is so violent and cruel in the method of how he kills the sirens

I find it interesting Odysseus had the sirens captured, but it’s a bit disappointing he chose to let them drown as opposed to using them as bait for Scylla. I understand that, narratively, he had to sacrifice his men, but the logical part of me is still disappointed Odysseus failed to think of that alternative. Perhaps it’s a subtle refutation of “ruthlessness is mercy on ourselves”?

If you want to see the Thunder Saga songs with the commissioned animatics, you can look up 4W Element Ender's video, they clipped the Thunder Saga bit from the official stream. Some things make more sense when you see what Jorge had in mind for them, especially for Mutiny and Thunder Bringer. Assuming you want to see that stuff before you check out the whole lifestream. Also be prepared for Trauma Redeux when it comes to the remastered Survive in the Cyclops Saga. I won't spoil how but I will say the improved audio is just...oof. Also Electric Hades :D.

If I'm perfectly honest this is probably my least favorite saga so far, but it does show the change in Odysseus. He really meant it when he said he'd become a monster, but I fear that might put him is risk of becoming too unlikeable to cheer for by the end. I'm also not as big a fan of just how many melodies were reused here and a lot of them just kind of felt off for the mood that was set.
