I work towards optimizing the tune on my barebow for a @WorldArcheryTV 50m round. I attempt to tune my barebow setup with the same principals that I use on my olympic style recurve.

Thanks Jake, as usual we learn so much from just seeing and hearing you go through the process. Just got my first ILF bow and loving all the adjustment (can't wait to give string crawling a try), your tuning series is gonna be a must to go back through - glad that even you have horrible flying arrows before tuning!! On a side note we have a coaching session with Ricci Cheah, Coach Lee's Australian prodigé, very cool. Really enjoying the barebow content.

Welcome to the joys of barebow tuning... You can sometimes find really interesting results. I don't try to understand anymore, I tune to have the bare shafts gouped and leave it there. Right now on my uukha SX+ or XX limbs I have the top of the lower nocking point at -2 millimeters. Maybe it has to do with the arrow rest not enjoying stringwalking. Anyway, it works.

Just remembering a conversation some years ago with an elite target archer when we used to shoot mainly FITAs and Double FITAs. He had a separate set up for each distance, each was specifically tuned and sighted up for each distance, and all he needed to do was fine tune the sight marks depending on weather conditions and if the course was not perfectly level. As long as you state to the tournament judge at the beginning of the competition which set up you are using at each distance, this is permitted. This applies to barebow too.

I have always had trouble with trad type high anchor points. I recently switched to a lower one with my big thumb knuckle behind the point of my jaw. It is rock solid and repeatable. I like it except my crawls got long and my nocking point had to go way up. I'm going to use it for a year and see how it goes.

You actually can walkback tune a barebow, I did that when I shot barebow and it worked like a charm. You could have a bit of change from distance to distance but it was so small so it didn't make any diffrence at all.

@@JakeKaminskiArchery The foil clad bubble wrap that some food delivery services use is great for sun shields for outdoor electronics. I've seen the brand name Reflectix in hardware stores sold in 2ftx10ft roles ~10$. Not sure if the reflective interior surface would change the lighting on the video equipment too much, although that's what flat black paint is for right. I happened to shoot 50yrds for the first time in years just yesterday, no tune, western euro trad recurve, just 40$ a dozen ebay special "sp500" 34" arrows. If I were a barn I'd be intimidated by my grouping. Everyone's got to start someplace. (yea I actually use ~32.5" from knock to rest, I'm not a small man).

I try to keep my 50m at split finger. Anything less is string walking. I've never tuned. I just make my set up work for me. As for anything over 50,... I keep split finger and aim off for 60 and at 70m I stop using the tip of the arrow to aim, but there's a spot between my arrow rest and the shelf... I use that to aim. Totally appreciate that my system isn't for everyone, but so long as it works for me. My knowledge is low, my luck is high lol 🇮🇪🏹

Hi Jake, My penny's worth when it comes to the age ol question can you tune/walk back tune/dowhatever with a barebow. Of course you can pick and discard steps an olympic recurve would demand paying attentin to and also definitely pay more attention to elements an olympic rig would not bother with. But i think the answer should be Do try it, the craziest thing you imagine, give it a go provided you dont compromise safety. What I mean is that even by finding out something is a dead end, you learn. And you have been down a path that made you come back maybe not because you met a brick wall but a locked door. A locked door that months later you have the key to open and try it again. A coach would advice for and against stuff, thats because they have tried it and if you don't have a coach or an expert you have to try it yourself. Also a coach would save time and focus on priority matters based on the athlete, it's his job to dismiss methods practices and tools in favour of the plan in progress... thats my penny's and a few more quarters worth.

@Jake I enjoy the way of teaching your wife to do everything herself so that she can also follow this learning process. Which barebow can you recommend to follow your way of tuning a barebow? I currently have the Bowtech SS34 but I want to go back a bit to the basics of archery, especially here in Europe they prefer to see you show up with a traditional bow. Almost all bows are sold online and must be ordered for left handed shooters, also at my professional detailer! There are so many brands and types in wood and aluminum, such as the Hoyt Handle Satori which riser 17" 19" 21"? What length and Drawweight of limbs? and length of the string? So the right choice of a barebow and how to put it together you haven't shown a youtube video yet, or am I mistaken? thanks in advance

Hi Jake, 1. question: Is this right, that a string walker nocking point must be higher from Zero as a mediterran releaser? 2. Because the angle string to arrows rest is for short distances smaller, for wich distance is the best to install the nocking point (the angle string and arrows rest is changing...) 3. I tryied to string walk the Bear Super Mag 48", but I didn't find the right n´point... Thanks for feedback! Michael

Not exactly related to the video, but as I was wrapping up equipment this evening a question popped in my head. Do you find you shoot better cold, shooting in the dark? Let me explain. In instinctual archery, one of the things we do occasionally is shoot at night with only the target lit. I personally don't tend to shoot full sessions like this, but I often will fire an arrow or two before destringing the bow and putting stuff away when evenings come a little earlier than I want them to. I have noticed I shoot an exceptionally high number of 10s this way compared to normal daylight practice....

I haven't shot them on a barebow yet, but the particular setup on an olympic style recurve, I wouldn't like it personally. But changing the limb weight and the tiller bolt position would help that uneasy feeling I am seeing. But I don't have another grand laying around to try. I feel like they are too finicky for the general public to guess the best limb position based on the feel they have.... unless their pocket books are deep or have the ability to try them.
@rickardbrinck2886
@rickardbrinck2886 3 жыл бұрын
This may be a stupid question, but in the recurve form series you stressed the importance of putting pressure with your bow hand towards the point you're aiming at, which I as a relative beginner have found to be absolutely crucial in increasing my scores. When aiming at the cut-out target face below the actual target at the shorter distances here, did you push towards it (point of aim) or at the actual center of the target (point of impact)? It might not even make a difference, I'm just curious.

Hi Jake. I noticed as you moved back in distance you also started to lower your anchor point. Up close your night anchor put your nock right under or almost even with the tip of your nose. As you moved back you anchor dropped almost an inch. Check the vid out and see if you agree. I’m certainly now expert but I do have the same problem. Great stuff.

The anchor doesn’t change, but the crawl (how far away from the nock I pull) does change. This makes the arrow move up and down, this gives me the ability to use the point as a reference to put in the middle of the target constantly.

what about the FOC% of the bare shaft (and the feathered arrow), after all, it is clearly larger, which means that with a properly configured knockpoint, it will still fly below the feathered arrow .... maybe you need to compensate for the weight of the back on the bare shaft, for example, with tape? And after adjusting the knockpoint, remove it and look at the stiffness - because the weighting of the knock increases the dynamic stiffness (the arrow bends less) ..
