Today we're giving our impressions on a new Nugget Ice Machine from New Air. Although this style of machine is a bit of a luxury, I won't lie, it's infinitely useful in a home bar. I can't even imagine what my home cocktail making was like without this machine. So yeah, you could track to Sonic or Chic-Fil-A for a bag of ice every time you need it, but honestly once you get a machine like this you'll never go back. Hope ya'll find this one useful!

Can you do a video on cleaning it and any hidden areas inside that grow mold. I use 3 21 pound bags of store ice every two weeks. I also get bottle water for my dispenser. So it be run it bag a couple large bags and put in freezer. At 200 watts one would not want it running all the time unless a house full of folks using it.

I've just received shipment of my unit and went though the requisite disinfection and flushing with HOCl and distilled water. And now I'm sitting in front of it on a Saturday morning listening to the sounds it's making. As other people have noticed, the ice making operation is quite loud with occasional staccato snapping noises. This is not the sound of the ice nuggets hitting the bin below. It sounds more like a high-torque blade shearing through the ice to cut off pieces of the ice. That already tells me that the texture of the Newair is much denser than that of he Opal. Other KZfaqrs have observed the same as he owns both. This isn't the same fluffy, crunchy texture as the Sonic ice, it just mimicks the shape of it. I might have to return my unit 😮‍💨

There is a water tank with this one but it’s on top instead of on the side like opal. I have both and the only thing better about the opal is that you can install a water filter plus with the water tank being on the side you could place the opal under a cabinet. The Frigidaire being on top needs clearance to remove the tank or you would have to always pull the unit out. They both make great comparable ice.

The container isn't refrigerated for a reason, the ice constantly melts to keep it from sticking together. Pretty much all standalone ice machines do the same. Transferring it to your freezer does keep it, but also will cause it to freeze together a bit. Not a big deal, but explains why it constantly melts.
@freepour
@freepour 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I’m not really a saying it should be any other way but the constant unfreezing and refreezing will result in the nuggets becoming smaller and smaller over time. Not a massive consideration but just something to note
@mikelemoine4267
@mikelemoine4267 2 жыл бұрын
I address this by removing the bag within the first 15-30 minutes and giving it a smack on the counter. The ice will only be starting to stick together so it's easy to break it up. By then, the ice is no longer wet so it won't clump back up on you. A little extra work, but it saves you a hassle trying to break up a block later.

I think he was meaning $200 less then the GE Opal's which are still around $650 (though there are some sales on refurbished or older model 1's) and then the second reference is to standalone counter top ice makers that make square, cubed and regular ice. those are more in the $250-$450 range. This and the Opal are the top two specifically "nugget" style ice makers that I'm aware of.

We have not been using this regularly. We do however use the Opal, and we have for several years now and it's been great. But, we don't keep it running 24/7. @@freepour Wait wait wait. I'm going to have to stop you there. That's not been my experience with this Newair machine. The pebbles feel as dense as regular cube ice. It's only the reduced volume that allows it to fracture more easily on the teeth. It's nowhere near the Opal or the commercial Scotsman. The melting and refreezing is very typical for ice that is stored just around 0°C/32°F, because, when Ice melts, it cools the surroundings, and the newly formed water is now below 0°C/32°F and freezes again. this has not nececarily anythign to do with the cooling or inuslation, but this may combound it, but is completely normal. This effect is why streets get so incredibly slippery around 0°C/32°C with light snow.

Here's what bugs me about these ice machines making ice.......then you transfer it to the ice bin in your main freezer... now all of the ice in the bin in the freezer is stuck together... It's sort of a learning curve... I take the ice bin out of my main freezer when it's full.. I get a butter knife and slightly break free and stir the ice loose then quickly put the bin back in and it's fine....doesn't take very long I just wish I didn't have to do this. I start with refrigerated water that's reverse osmosis so the waater is always cold...and the ice doesn't look the least bit melted when I transfer it to the freezer... but it is slightly "wet"... I think that's why it sticks.

The reason why he didn't run the machine in the video is because he doesn't want you to know the loud noises this thing makes as it's cutting the little cubes of ice off into the tray. Also, it's only that loud because the ice it produces is so dense. The cracking sound as the blade pushes through it is because it requires a lot of energy to induce a fracture.
