Thank you for sharing this! It seems quite tedious, however the result is well worth it. When I was younger, I skipped the whole drawing thing and started right into painting. I ended up doing a lot of paintings that were all way off the mark and I lost the having fun part. I thought having the general colour there would do the trick. To me it's clear as day now that the subtleties of tonality and form are a lot easier to digest in drawn form than full colour. If you master that, you'll notice that even if the hue of your painting is off, as long as the tonality and form is correct, you'll still end up with a very natural looking work. Get that and you can have fun again.

I just watched lesson 28 for the first time this morning and am relieved you mentioned the slight differences between the blocked in version and the completed version on the Bargue plates. I have been using Bargue plates as a fist exercise in my high school atelier for the past 3 years, and found the disparity the very first year. Since then, I have instructed my students to establish their notional spacebox and all measurements off the more completed version of the plate. All their measurements are taken from the completed version on the plate. I laminate the Bargue plates before the students use them, and they can mark their notional box and initial plotting points with a marker, that are then easily erased after use, for another student to reuse. I am a former student of Paul Ingbretson.

Hi Sandra, those are great ideas! Please make sure you ask your high school students to submit their work to the high school section of the Art Renewal Center Salon this year! www.artrenewal.org/SalonApplication/Salon/Awards

You are welcome! This method is known as "atelier training". If you search for "atelier" you will find a lot of content about this type of drawing.

Thank you so much for this series. I'm a 20 y/o who has only recently really gotten into art and I've been trying to teach myself by scourging the internet for information and educative content, and finding this has been absolutely crucial in my further growth. A lot of videos give you some basic and superficial tips, but all the tiny details that you talk about and little tips and thoughts really help to flesh out the educativity (if that's a word?) of the videos. You give your videos the value of a good teacher (or as close as that you can get via digital media). So thank you so much.

Thank you so much for your kind comments. I am an art teacher by training prior to discovering the atelier methods and try to apply the best research on how to teach atelier skills in these videos.

That whole process was amazing to watch, thank you. How many plates do you suggest should be done to cover the different types of subjects?
@thedavinciinitiative5045
@thedavinciinitiative5045 4 жыл бұрын
The course was conceived with the intent that students would copy many of the plates. I have copied 10-12 at this point to varying degrees of finish. I strongly encourage you to copy plates that relate to visual problems you are learning how to solve. For example, if you are practicing drawing portraits, copy the portrait plates.

Mandy, just took the plunge yesterday and started my first Bargue drawing. I had watched all of these as they came out and now am going back to watch then draw. I am excited to see my lines start to appear on the page. I noticed that on your patreon page you mentioned that you might do a cast drawing series. I hope you do. Any chance of a weekend workshop on bargue?

Hello, I am delighted to hear you are working through your own drawing. We do intend to eventually release a cast drawing series. We just finished filming a series on rendering a sphere, and hope to have that edited and released in the near future. I teach workshops all over the country for art teachers at their state art education association conferences. If you would like to attend one of these conferences, you can register and sign up for one of my workshops. You can learn more here: www.davinciinitiative.org/art-education-conferences.html I also run a month-long program for art educators in July. Although art teachers have first priority for open spaces, you are welcome to apply if you are serious about learning these techniques: www.davinciinitiative.org/summer-teacher-atelier.html

Do we have to use charcoal with Bargue drawings? I use graphite pencils. I don't like to use charcoal. And i don't have a good quality charcoal. Is it ok to use graphite? Whats the difference? Thanks.
@thedavinciinitiative5045
@thedavinciinitiative5045 4 жыл бұрын
It is absolutely ok to use pencil. The advantage of charcoal is that it can get darker in value than pencil, which means the value range over all is bigger in charcoal than in pencil. That being said, you can get very beautiful effects in pencil even if its value range is more limited. It is important to be careful about separating your values so that your shadow values are only used in your shadow areas.

That was quite a journey! I was hoping it wouldn't end... Now I forgot how you started the process... and I misplaced the links to those videos... would you mind drawing an egg in one or two sessions... or maybe just a full scale Asian elephant...

Even on modern day printing scannings the final result differs to the original. Even a camera does not take a true picture due to distortion in the optics of the lens used. Enjoyed following this series. But after copying/following the Arm drawing exercise I decided this form of art is not for me.

Yes, the camera condenses 3D information into 2D information in a very specific way that is different from the methods artists have developed over centuries to condense 3D information into drawings.
@megindog6484

Depending on the lens used the image is distorted. An extreme example is a fish eye lens. In various degrees all lens have the same effect.. Hence a portrait photographer would use a 135mm lens which gives less distortion.
