It's pretty easy to have your order messed up when you're ordering from Starbucks; it's even easier if you're deaf. Steve Hartman went "On the Road" to show how one barista in Virginia is going above and beyond to change that for one of their regulars.

Kc Shuaipi we have a close family friend that we've known since we were little. My mom grew up with the mother and I grew up with her son. The mother is deaf and it hurts to not be able to communicate with her. I have recently got interested in PSE so hopefully I can start to communicate with her more. :) Her son will hopefully help me, since he's had to learn it fluently in order to talk to his mom.

When I was a cashier, I had a woman come in who I believe was deaf/hh, or possibly could hear but not speak. She gestured to me showing she had 2 croissants in her bakery bag. I rung up the order and made sure to face her whenever I had a question and when I told her the total. At the end, she signed thank you, and I signed you're welcome right back. I'll never forget the way her face lit up throughout our interaction. Learning ASL and learning about Deaf/hh is so rewarding, for both hearing and deaf people!

Me too and I’m lucky to help out the deaf customers when I see them to be able to communicate with them even if it’s just the basic sign language cause nobody else knows it My BFF from Oregon taught me when we were in high school together I live in South Jersey on the east coast now I did that once and my GM/shift manager were surprised but I just explained that I had learned that from my BFF who is partially deaf when he came back a few months later I noticed my GM watching me communicate with him and knew I was a good asset to her store so I know if she gets deaf customers I’m pretty sure she’ll call me up to the front and sign for them (I work in Back Cash)

As a former interpreter I will caution you on the ‘help’ part of your post. If you want to ‘facilitate’ communication between Hearing and Deaf people, go for it. You will find that it is a very mixed bag littered with obstacles you cannot yet fathom and only realize once you’re ‘in.’ Help, as you say, is viewed as paternalistic in the Deaf Community. Best of luck should you pursue this vocation. It is extremely difficult and not for everyone, especially ‘helpers.’ Sorry if it seems harsh, it’s just the reality and I don’t want you to rush into something with an attitude that the Deaf Community will rebuke.

I was shopping at a local Walmart and was trying to find a product, so I asked a stocker that I happened upon just down the aisle. He held up one finger and proceeded to walk away. I didn't know he was deaf so I just figured he might have been shy and waited for him to come back, which he did with someone who was able to help. I took a stab at 'Maybe he's deaf, but I know how to say 'thank you',' so I approached him again and did the sign for 'thank you'. His eyes lit up and he smiled and said 'you're welcome' back. I have made time and learned a couple more signs since this interaction for the next time if I ever happened to cross paths with someone who is deaf so I can at least say 'hi' to them or comment on the weather.

I worked as a receptionist and Spanish tutor at my college before quarantine, and I noticed one guy with hearing aids never interacted or responded much to my "Good morning! How are you?" with a big smile and wave, so I decided to learn basic signs to say, "Hi! How are you?" I will probably never see him again since it was the last day before school went online, but it was really sweet to see his face light up when I literally spoke, well, signed, his language. I also now have a sign name! It's a mix of the letter A and the sign for Film. Language is amazing.

I don’t understand them they don’t speak English”. I greeted them and used what little asl I knew which was just abcs and thank you. I helped them find the items they were looking for and made sure they were okay before heading back to my department. The smiles on their faces is not something I’ll ever forget and while my asl is still a little rusty it doesn’t hurt to have as like any other language it helps someone feel apart of the world or included then it’s all the more reason to learn

Watching this and reading other people's comments on here with how they're learning ASL to do their service job also inspires me to learn. I'm a nurse and I have deaf patients occassionally so this would be so nice to know how to communicate better with them too. 🙂

I learned Spanish just for a few regulars I used to have at Walgreens. But my manager said I wasn't allowed to speak Spanish to them since I'm "not Hispanic, which could offend the customers." LMAO I quit like a week later

My sister is deaf and I can sign but she has cochlear implants so she can hear but whenever I meet someone who can only sign I always sign back to the best of my ability, sometimes I can’t sign certain things so I always apologise but it makes them smile when I sign back, even if some of it means absolutely nothing at all.
