ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
Breeding season begins early
For barn owls Willow & Ghost breeding season starts in December, with the snow still on the ground. Their last brood having barely left the nest, Willow chases away her three chicks so that she and Ghost can begin preparing for a new family.
Preparing the nest
While normally barn owls lay in the spring, Willow scrapes out a hollow to lay eggs in. Although this is not unheard of behaviour, it is unusual.
Defending the nest
Particularly keen on this nest, Willow must fight off barn owls and kestrels to make sure Sycamore Stump remains hers.
Willow lays egg
By mid-January the first egg is here. Willow must now incubate and rely on Ghost to supply her with food. When he turns up with just a small morsel she almost throws it at him.
Two more eggs
Barn owls lay their eggs 2-3 days apart. Willow's 2nd egg comes 2 days after the 1st and the 3rd another 3 days later. Watch the male barn owl Ghost's reaction when he sees his two eggs.
Incubating eggs in February
As blizzards howl and rain lashes the nest, Ghost struggles to fly to hunt for food. But the pair battle on, keeping their eggs warm despite the storms.
Barn owl Skye hatches
At last the 1st chick hatches and within a few hours Willow feeds the tiny owlet its first meal. The chick, a female later named Skye, can barely sit upright and its eyes are yet to open.
Chicks 2&3 hatch
The 2nd & 3rd chicks hatch and Willow & Ghost are now busy feeding and incubating. The chicks vary in size considerably. The older two can already bob their heads and flap their wings.
First peeks outside
By March the chicks are spending their days looking out of the nest.
Owl bath
Barn owls need to keep their feathers clean and after so long in the nest Willow bathes in a pond.
Owlets alone
The weather is now hot and as the chicks grow there is less room in the nest. So Willow moves out, but stays close to protect the chicks.
Flight feathers
As their adult plumage grows through, the chicks lose their fluffy down, covering the nest in the tiny waxy pins that top the flight feathers.
Sibling love
Now they are alone, the chicks take care of one another. But sibling love goes out of the window at dinner time!
First fledge
Skye, the first to fledge, takes a short flight out of the nest and back.
ID rings
The owlets get identification tags and we learn how to tell the difference between male & female barn owls and enjoy a close up of how their claws fit together like puzzle pieces to help them hunt.
Fledgling owlets grow
Over the next month the owlets perfect their flying and hunting skills, using Sycamore nest as a base. It's amazing to watch them gain confidence.

This video is, imho, one of your most spectacular visually, and also the best insight into a Barn Owl family's life, that I have ever seen. I wish Richard Attenborough and Chris Packham could see this film. Would love to hear their comments. Actually, this film is better than many TV documentaries. Fact. I hope one of them sees this one day as you need and deserve greater recognition for your talents!

Actually differing bird species especially the mostly herbivores or carnivores with similar sized herbivores/omnivores routinely get along very well in nature, sometimes play, have play fights, or make friends even, especially the seed eaters

I'm genuinely wondering if he just wasn't finding anything. Maybe with how late in the year it was, with all the other raptors that were growing up in the area at the other nests, there was just a run on local prey? It seems at odds with what we see here, especially since he's doing much better in outright wintertime.

Very proud of Ghost for stepping up to do his job this time around 👍 providing for a mate and 3 chicks is not easy, especially in the middle of winter! Things could very easily have fallen apart for this family, if Ghost had slacked off the way he did last time, but he really pulled through for them. Well done, Ghost!

I live in the Mojave Desert, Southern California. Sometimes at night, while driving along some of these barely there back ass desert roads, the only light source for miles, are the headlights on your car. So once in a while, driving down one of the roads, there will be a barn owl keeping pace with the car, maybe 2 feet above the passenger side of the windshield, using the car lights to their advantage, looking for food. It's so awesome. It's like they just hover above the windshield scanning out in front of the car

I love how laid back and sleepy Echo is compared to her brother and sister. When the chicks are lined up side by side at 30:17 Sky and Spirit are alert, meanwhile Echo looks like she’s struggling to keep awake lol, and while the older two are perched on the entrance to the nest, she’s fast asleep inside, perched on one leg. So cute. They’re like people, each with their own personality.

Although I had a thousand _OTHER_ things to do today, I found myself *GLUED TO THE SCREEN BY THIS AMAZING OWL FAMILY!* A wonderfully assembled video story. From beginning to end, I would NOT change a single thing here. *PERFECT!* Thank you, *Robert E. Fuller,* for taking these pictures, and thereby supporting these lovely creatures through the education you give to others. Not everyone can get around into the meadows, fields, and woodlands as YOU are able to do, so a special "Thanks To You" from those of us who _CAN'T_ get around, but who are now, at least, able to "live vicariously" via your photographic talents. You've enriched _MY_ life considerably, that's for sure! 👍👵🖖 The final video shot, including *ALL FIVE OWLS* of this lovely family, brought tears of joy to THESE old eyes, so *THANK YOU, AGAIN!* 🦉🦉💚🌳🦉🦉🌳🐀💚🦉 .

I love that the pattern on their feathers looks like little eyes. They're absolutely beautiful, magnificent creatures. 😍

This episode is really heartwarming and uplifting. There are any number of human characteristics that I notice and identify with in this group of feathered friends, very good show!

Watching from Virginia, USA. I have just found this channel and it literally makes my heart ache to see the pure beauty of the British countryside. Nothing will ever better it. I am British and formerly of the Staffordshire Moorlands, and it takes my breath away watching this - oh how I miss home! I am homesick! Thankyou REF for bringing a little bit of 'home' to my life here across the pond. The Kestrels have my heart, but this story of the Owl fam was just stunning.

I love these longer forms of videos 💕 I've been watching this channel for a bit now and it's always so relaxing to watch the bird parents raising their young and paired with the narration 🤌 Perfection

turtles, croc, and dino movies had me convinced animals lay all the clutch at once, i was shocked to see not birds, and all that the spacing entails
