In this video build log series I am building a vintage RPM Barn Stormer 25S RC Plane Kit. If you like to fly, build, crash and repair RC planes (Radio Control Planes), I hope this video build series will be informative, interesting and maybe entertaining.
This video I go over and do a test run of the OS MAX 25 FP or OS ENGINES .25 FP glow engine. The OS Max .25 FP was produced in the 1980s and I purchased a "new" one on ebay. I will show how to break in, or run in, a new RC glow engine by showing how I broke in the OS Max 25 FP engine per the original instructions. I used Powermaster glow fuel (nitro fuel) for rc plane engines with 15% nitromethane and 18% oil. I used a wood Master Airscrew 9-5 propeller with a OS propeller hub. I also show my recent build of my rc engine test stand setup that is equipped with a Mayatech rc engine test stand. I ran the engine with a RICH mixture for two tanks and monitored RPMs using a Hangar 9 tachometer. After this the engine is ready to be mounted on the airplane as we get closer to finishing this build.
I have been building, flying, crashing, modifying, and repairing radio control planes for many years and enjoy sharing what I do with the radio control plane community. I fly with Futaba radio equipment, OS Max engines and Saito engines and typically run Morgan and Powermaster glow fuels. I fly ARF rc planes, but I also like to build rc plane kits.
Lets keep RC plane kit building alive! RC plane kits I have built or will be building include vintage House of Balsa RC (DHC Chipmunk), Royal Marutaka RC kits (Bird Dog, B-25 Mitchel, P-51 Mustang, F4-U Corsair), Sterling RC Kit (Stearman PT-17). I also build modern ARF RC kits (Great Planes, Hangar 9). My next rc plane build will be the Balsa USA Smoothie 40.

One of my first engines, great idle, good transition with solid high rpm performance. Used it on several planes with great success and no ball bearings to worry about,

Hi, very nice! I like the FP series, they were actually designed by OS as an “economical” and easier to run engine series back in the 1980s. They took a few design shortcuts to make them more affordable back then, but they run great and are very reliable and compared to today’s standards, they are very good quality in my opinion. I would just follow the run in procedures and let it break in if its new. If it’s used and you are not sure of the history, I would run it in again just to make sure it was broken in. They have air bleed carbs for the low idle setting unlike engines with a dedicated low speed needle. The air bleed is not fine of a adjustment as with the a low speed setup, but they still work. Its hard to see , but the factory setting for the air bleed is halfway covering the little hole in front. So thats where you can set it for factory settings. Air bleed is opposite of a low speed needle. To adjust air bleed, turn out for leaning and in for rich. But as said, its a rough adjustment so its not perfect. Other than that, as ling as you have a good glow plug and freaking fuel, (I like 15% nitro), the engine should run great forever, oh and of course run it on the rich side, tune to highest pitch, then open it up a bit to richen it up. When in flight you should see a faint stream of smokey exhaust. There is info online that you can find on forums and such, and this website is really cool. They may or may not have your exact models but the 40fp and other are all about the same, good luck with it! sceptreflight.com/Model%20Engine%20Tests/Index.html

Great video and well explained in detail. I started flying my Yamamoto trainer 40 in 1986. It was powered by an OS 40 two stroke. I'm still flying glow planes today and they are still my favourite. Thanks for sharing this, I enjoyed it.

I definitely appreciate this video, as a kid I built an lt40 kit but never got to fly it. over time it was just destroyed. I found another plane for a great deal at a garage sale and a family friend said he could teach me on it though it wasn't a trainer and unfortunately he passed before I could get to learn. I have asked others but they are afraid to teach me on that plane as it is a sport flyer type. I did end up finding Nib aerostar 40 with 4ch radio and os 40 motor never assembled and I am going to build again another trainer and your videos are super useful as like this to help with the break in process thanks for these videos
@JamesRCPlaneTech
@JamesRCPlaneTech 2 жыл бұрын
Yes it would be a challenge to learn to fly with a sport plane. A good high wing mount trainer is the best. And if new to flying, an ARF trainer may be the ticket, then once you get the hang of flying start building trainers. Sounds like you have a good plane to build. Take your time and good luck. And if you haven’t flown much, I recommend an rc flight simulator. They help develop that sense of direction and orientation of a plane flying at you and away etc, and you can crash all day long in a simulator.

@@JamesRCPlaneTech I looked for an arf trainer but they are so expensive...and hard to find. I really want to learn on nitro, but I couldn't pass up the whole kit for what it was. A complete kit, motor and radio for 250. I have time and I have been playing with trainer software. I have been stalking all of your build videos lol.

Ya , the arfs are more expensive. The Balsa USA Smoothie kit im building now was 130 bucks, not cheap, but similar size arf would be in the 200 range. More power to you for building, its great and it looks like you got a great deal.

This is a great video, thanks for sharing! I am 49y old and back when I was 17 I built a PILOT-model Attacker 28 with an OS .25SF engine. Long story short, I never flew it (went to college and life took me to a different path in hobbies!) , my cousin tried to fly it like like 8 years after, but with no success. So he put the model in the storage for >23 years and recently he gave it back to me, 'cause I am in the hobby again!!! The engine was petrified because of the remained old fuel. I managed to take it apart, clean it and rebuild it and now I am ready for break in. So your video comes in very handy! Couple of questions: I notice that in yours there is a gastket on the exhaust manifold, in mine there isn't any. Is it missing or just not all engines have a gasket there? Also there is no metal gasket between cylinder and head, is that normal also? (Because I reckon the engine was never opened before). In fact the only gasket is located on the crankshaft backplate. Thank you in advance for your opinion. PS: In the description you say "I ran the engine with a lean mixture for two tanks and monitored RPMs using a Hangar 9 tachometer", I guess you want to say that you ran it with a rich mixture.

@JamesRCPlaneTech 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Wow what a great story. You sound like a lot of us who were doing this back before we had all of life’s other responsibilities as we get older. You are correct for sure, saying I ran lean was a major mistake and thanks for pointing that out. I will need to put a note on that video and repost it. About the gaskets, I have had several OS engines and they never came with a muffler gasket, but I got this one on ebay and it was in the box. Im not sure if OS ever supplied them in the FPs but I never had one, just straight muffler to engine contact. But I used it here since I had it, it actually tore so I made a new by tracing it on some gasket material, after using it for a while the muffler got loose and I decided that it was more trouble than what ever benefit it was supposed to be, so I scrapped it. So I do not use it now. I believe the only gasket on the FP and I bet yours is the same, was on the back plate of the crankcase as you noted. There is no gasket on the cylinder head. If you can obtain a pdf of the original manual online (should be able to find it somewhere) there will be the blow up diagram of all the parts and that may be useful. Long winded here but in short, my experience is the only gasket is on the crankcase backplate. I hope that helps and thanks for the note on lean, I will edit that! Great that you are back in the hobby, good luck!

Hello. Sorry you are having trouble with your engine. I don’t understand the issue you are describing, can you provide more detail on what is wrong? I’m not sure I would be able to help, your best bet is to study the manual and search online for posts related to your specific engine to see if there is info on it.

i have ASP s32a engine brande new without box and manual.... how to tune carburetor low speed needle and fuel needle setting
@JamesRCPlaneTech
@JamesRCPlaneTech 11 ай бұрын
Does the manual go over it? I’m not familiar with that particular engine brand. It would be best to see if the manual gives instructions, and if you don’t have the manual I believe you can search online to get a copy. I would start their and make sure your settings are how the engine was set up from the factory. The manual should tell you that info. Then start and tune the engine per the manual. If its like an OS Engines , you tune the high speed to the top rpm and then open up a little to drop the RPM so the engine runs a little rich. Then tune the low speed for a smooth transition. From idle speed, if you apply the throttle and it stalls quickly, its probably too lean and you need to open slightly, if on the other hand you apply throttle and a lot of smoke comes out and the engine bogs down and is rough , it too rich, so turn in slightly. The low speed needle should only be turned in very fine amounts when tuning. Its a trial and error procedure. Try to find more videos on youtube that show people tuning glow engines. But the best it to check the manual and start there.

I had one. Unusually poor low power performer. The FP15 was eggzellent. The my 25 met its demise when my radio froze up. The plane hit the concrete at 88 degs 2/3 throttle.. I still use the piston and conrod as a charm on my keychain.. If you really wanna do a .25 size... go for the SF or the plain ole "max" one. Run in is always with dzjerrooo nitro. Normal causal is 5%. Funny Sundays at 12% and it will last a lifetime.

Ya, the FPs are not the highest end engines, but that said, being made by OS they are still fantastic. I did the same to my original 25fp,I had the wing flutter and rip off in a dive and the engine hit the pavement at about 80degrees and completely shattered! I had it for 30 years! .. thanks for your comments and tips!
