Sterling sharpe In 1994, Sharpe concluded one of the greatest three-year stretches by a wide receiver in NFL history. He caught 94 passes for 1,119 yards and 18 touchdowns. His 18 touchdowns were the second-highest single-season total in NFL history. Sharpe suffered a severe neck injury during the 1994 season and was forced to retire at age 29. In his eight-year career, Sharpe played in all 112 games. He caught 595 passes for 8,134 yards and 65 touchdowns. When he retired, only three NFL players averaged more receiving yards per game (72.6). Only eight players had more career receptions and touchdowns. From 1992-94, Sharpe's average season looked like this: 105 receptions, 1,285 yards, and 14 touchdowns.

Sterling sharpe one of the greatest seasons by a wide receiver in NFL history. He caught 108 passes for 1,461 yards and 13 touchdowns. Sharpe became just the sixth player to win the receiving Triple Crown-leading in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. His 107 receptions broke the single-season record of 106 set by Washington Redskins receiver Art Monk in 1984. In 1993, Sharpe broke his own single-season reception record by hauling in 112 passes. He became the first receiver to top 100 receptions in consecutive seasons, and his 1,274 receiving yards and 11 scores ranked third in the league.

@@robsmith961 One play? Barry has more of these plays than any back in history [and it's not close]. He never fumbled and he did these things with a terrible offensive line and inept QB play [for the most part].
@manuginobilisbaldspot424
@manuginobilisbaldspot424 5 жыл бұрын
@@davidwilliams4837 What did Barry Sanders do in the postseason? And the biggest misconception is the 'lack of help' argument. He had TWO multiple Pro Bowl linemen in Lomas Brown and Kevin Glover. He had multiple 1000 receivers to ease the attention paid to him in the run game (Richard Johnson, Herman Moore, Brett Perriman, Johnnie Morton). Scott Mitchell wasn't an elite QB, but the Lions got to the playoffs like 2-3 times in 4 years with him as the starter. Barry Sanders never had to carry the load the way the two best runners of all time did...Jim Brown and Walter Payton. Talk about inept QB play...look at Walter Payton's QB's from 1975 to 1981. Hell even Jim McMahon was largely average outside of 1985. Payton didn't had a SINGLE OFFENSIVE PRO BOWL TEAMMATE until his 10th year in the league. NINE YEARS WITHOUT A SECOND PRO BOWL CALIBER OFFENSIVE PLAYER. Sanders is the biggest sizzle over steak player in football history. For all the great plays, he'd be even more likely to LOSE YARDS (most lost yards in history). This was the reason the Lions couldn't just give him the ball 25 times a game...because he'd try to make the spectacular play and force them in obvious passing downs. He wasn't on Payton's level as a pass receiver or pass blocker either. Great player, great talent, but there's a reason why he never sniffed a Super Bowl. Performances like he had against this same team in the playoffs was a big part (13 carries, -1 yard...only player in NFL history with negative yards and at least 12 carries in postseason history).

Like just throw the ball as high and far as I can. People talk about the 4th & 26 play in the 04 playoffs @ Philly but so often forget his putrid pick on the first possession in OT. The game against the Saints or Rams or EVERY @ Dallas game also comes to mind. Just 3rd string kind of stuff.

Good highlights package. Dave Krieg was his vintage best in 1994 - I don't think many QBs were more fearsome streak passers than Krieg. When he was hot (as he occasionally was over medium stretches; 1984, '86, '88 especially), he might have been the best passer in the league. He was red-hot after taking over for injured Scott Mitchell and teaming up with Barry Sanders he very nearly took the Lions to playoff glory (the dream ended, appropriately, in another close duel at Lambeau in the Wild Card round.) I think the Lions erred when they let him walk to Arizona and turned back to the inept Mitchell for 1995. He was erratic and, yeah, the infamous small hands/fumbles reputation is at least partly true, but the guy from Milton College was a better than average NFL passer - elite when on a hot streak - who generally found a way to win. Very underrated.

To this day, I still say Dave Krieg is the best quarterback that I've ever seen in a Lions uniform. He only had this one year in Detroit, as he was at the end of his 17 year pro bowl career. But he took a team that was floundering in the first six weeks of the season, came in for an injured starter and led the Lions to the playoffs that year. The Lions would play this team again in Green Bay which was another tough close game as Green Bay went on to play Dallas in the next round of the playoffs, which Dallas won then they lost to Steve Young & Jerry Rice and the rest of the 49rs in the NFC championship.

Dan Marino and the Dolphins needed a guy like Barry Sanders to strengthen their offense. Just imagine Marino and Barry playing together.

barry sanders was one of the rare players in nfl history to get by on pure talent alone. regardless of his supporting cast, he was able to consistently dominate every year. i'm sure he was a hard worker, but he could have been put on the worst team in the nfl every year, and still he still would have produced.

I think this game was blacked out in Detroit (along with both the Week 18 Division Clincher & the Wild Card game the following Week the previous season), it was the last time a Lions home game against the Packers got blacked out though.

My dad is a Packers fan and I remember him getting irritated anytime Barry Sanders having a big game against his Packers. I was a Lions fan while in high school, but had to give up being a Lions fan when I went to college at Michigan State. It was probably for the best. I don't like Stafford because his Georgia team beat MSU in a bowl game.

Wayne Fontes was so afraid that Barry would get hurt that he took him out a lot on the goal line. Barry would've had many more touchdowns if not for that ridiculous head coach. Barry was a beast at all facets of the RB position. He was a great pass catcher and great on the goal line as well. But Fontes didn't maximize his potential. What Barry did in 10 seasons is mind blowing. Can you imagine if he was on a perennial playoff team who used him properly?

Imagine how unstoppable Green Bay's offense would've been with Sharpe there the next 3 years when Favre emerged as the MVP & the league's top passer. Green Bay became a Super Bowl contender. If Sterling Sharpe didn't get hurt, that offense would've probably broke all kinds of records & would've probably been up there with the 49ers offense in 89' & 94'. As well as the Pats offense of 07' & the Vikings offense in 99'

In an interesting twist. All 4 of those 5 NFC Central teams in contention at the beginning of this game would make the playoffs. Occupying 4 of the 6 NFC spots. All three wild card spots. Green Bay would win out. Detroit would win 2 of 3. Both to finish 9-7 along with the Bears. While the Vikings won the division at 10-6. NOT ONLY THAT... all four Central teams would play each other in the Wild Card Round. The Central literally comprised the entire NFC Wild Card round. The Bears beating Minnesota 35-18 and Green Bay beating Detroit 16-12. What an odd, odd NFC Central race that year.
