The last TD to Sharpe defines Brett Farve as a football player in a nutshell, just doing what he did best- gunsling.

The second threading the needle is even better. Just not the game winner. Great being a Packer fan.
@jonmolina948 Жыл бұрын
They had Sterling doubled the whole game. Favre had the arm to thread the needle at times. The pick six Favre threw was also intended for Sharpe I believe. The Lions had it covered.

Totally fitting for Brett Favre to get his first playoff win on a play like that in a game where he threw a ridiculous pick-six. Epitomized one of the most unconventional careers in NFL history.

Earlier that day, Joe Montana led KC to an overtime win. Surreal to think that Joe Montana and Brett Favre won playoff games on the same day

Yup - in those days the NFL did not play cold-weather games in the evening unless absolutely necessary. The late time slots in the second half of the season were usually reserved for warm-weather cities or indoor games. Nowadays this game would have been in the early slot and Chiefs/Steelers would have been in the late one regardless of the weather.

I still think Sterling was the missing piece that would have given the Packers 3 super bowls in the 90s making them a dynasty team. So sad.

If you think about it the Packers have had some bad luck with recievers. Sharpe retired early. Robert Brooks last good year was at age 27. Javon Walker Injury ruined his career. Greg Jennings tore his knee was never the same.

I remember Sterling Sharpe telling a story about this game, saying during that last drive, "If I score the winning touchdown, I will do the press conference after the game," which was a big deal because he NEVER talked to the press then. Sure enough, he scored the touchdown, and he followed through on his word, but when he went to do the press conference, the reporters were so shocked, they never asked him a question.

One of my favorite non Packer, Barry Sanders, I still remember the game the Packers D held him to -6 yards. Loved to watch Barry and especially when he scored (except against us) he would just hand the ball to the ref, unlike today where they have a dance if they make a tackle. Classy guy

Great game Jacob! This set the stage for greater things to come, namely the Super Bowl 3 years later. Favre's skill set was on display through it still needed seasoning. And let's give credit, Barry Sanders was an unique talent. This game was a crossroads for both of these magnificent players. This was in all likelihood Barry's best team, for Kramer was good enough to exploit a Packer D keying on Barry (Mr. Sanders still made plays). Brett's magic was evident, and the D which had been burned from time to time closed things out. Detroit has yet to have a better opportunity, and the rest was history for the Pack. The strange thing that came out of losing Sharpe was that Farve became a better QB because of it. Sharpe was his security blanket, and when he was lost, Brett had to learn how to spread the wealth. Would Farve had still been great? Perhaps, but I don't believe that he would have set his records.

Why did sharpe have to get hurt
@indigoscout6 жыл бұрын
He had the same condition that almost ended Payten Manning's career, and did end that of his brother Cooper. It was spinal stenosis of the neck, and when it was diagnosed, Sharpe had no choice but to retire, or the next hit he received could have paralyzed him.

I remember this game vividly. One of the many heartbreaking Lion games. I had forgotten Herman Moore missed that long pass with 38 seconds to go. Would’ve put the Lions on the Green Bay 38 yard line with plenty of time to take some shots in the end zone. Classic Lions “close but no cigar.”
