Ho ho ho, it's the first Simpsons game for Christmas 1992 and Imagineering are back with Bart vs. the Juggernauts. It's the second in the line of original Simpsons game that were developed only for the Game Boy. This time we have a mini game collection centred around Bart going onto a game show similar to Gladiators. After quite a few failed attempts at platformers, maybe a nice little mini game collection is just want the doctor ordered.

I'm still loving these reviews, it's fascinating to see what the were making with this franchise back then and the odd approach (sometimes) to making a game that frankly always seem to feel like a first attempt at designing a game

Man, I never played this one but I definitely remember that short commercial as a kid featuring Bart VS The World and this game together on TV and it was also featured I think in Nintendo Power and adverts for a few Marvel comic books at the time. The graphics are definitely a step up from Camp Deadly with shading and more frames of animation. I may fire this up just to see how unfair the gameplay and bad the controls are but I'm looking forward to your reaction with Bart's Nightmare when you upload it soon. 😃

It was standard practice back in these days to expect players to read manuals. Loads of NES and Game Boy games give no tutorial and no button prompts - you’re simply meant to have read the manual. So I can’t see that as a weakness when it’s so standard for the time…. that’s all out of me, though. Greatly enjoying your Simpsons review series

Nice to hear you're enjoying the videos. I mostly agree about the manuals, I was reading manuals up until the PS2 days myself. My general approach is that I start playing each of these games without touching the manual, and if I'm not sure of something then give it a read to fill in the blanks. I think that best represents people's experiences and it allows me to get a more 'fresh' impression when playing for the first time, while still ultimately reading the manual. While I do mostly agree, there are some problems with relying on the manual for these games. The first is that a lot of the best games from the time didn't require it, you could get by without it and still figure out and enjoy the games. Anyone could pick up Super Mario Bros at the time and have fun with it. When the basic controls are unclear and you're not given proper time to figure them out though, then that feels unfair even if the manual does cover it. Manuals that are more about giving extra information or let you know about silly stuff you missed work better imo. Second, these are Simpsons video games which would typically be played by people who are younger. Sure they might read the manual, but doesn't feel right to expect children to do so. These aren't massive or complex games like a strategy game or RPG, they're games about the Simpsons mostly for kids. The focus should have been on being a fun and accessible game, and having to read a manual gets in the way of that. Lastly, there's lots of situations where you might not have the manual. Maybe you borrowed it from a friend, you bought the game second hand or just lost it. Especially with Bart vs the Juggernauts being on the Game Boy, there's a good chance you don't have the manual at hand if you're playing when you're out and about. This ended up being a long reply but I do think reading the manual is a part of these games which is why I do it, but with these being Simpsons video games, expecting everyone to do that and having the games be confusing without doing so just wasn't a smart choice.
