I attended bartending school, I was an instructor at a bartending school for over a year, and I also have 10 years of bartending experience. I personally recommend bartending school. My reason is different from most. Bartending school teaches you a variety of bartending. You will learn how you make classic cocktails, shots, martinis, and if you’re at a good school you will learn about beer and wine. That allows you to bartend and apply to a variety of different bars. One of the flaws of expierence is, your expierence is limited to the bar you worked at. If you take a club bartender and put them in a craft cocktail bar, they won’t know what to do. You put a craft cocktail bartender in a busy dive bar 4 deep, they won’t know what to do. Their experience won’t really make a difference. When it comes to bartending school, you learn how to bartend in all of those settings, and that’s what makes you the most money. If you want to be a high paid bartender work at multiple bars a week. Bartending school (THE RIGHT TEACHER) will help you learn how you be a diverse bartender, and not be limited to one style of bartending. I have worked in fine dining, night clubs, country clubs, hole in the walls, dive bars, sports bars, family restaurants, hotel bars, craft cocktail bars, and I’m moving to the Virgin Islands to be a Vacation bartender. I owe all of this to the bartending school!

the bartending school i applied for teaches wine knowledge, beer knowledge, cigarr knowledge, how to be a barista, customer service, flair, cashiering, and they guarantee a 3 week work trial at a place around the town, and you can even ask some other towns bar and they will maybe let you try out for 3 weeks there. i feel like this school is passionate about the drinks aswell as the customer service. i got this as a graduation present for highschool and im stoked. (btw @Vibe With Vic , they said i should go on to www.systembolaget.se to learn about spirits, beer, wine, etc. what do they mean? like what spirits go with what fruits and what are staples for wines?)

I had began bartending without any experience or knowledge and soon acquired 8 months and 2 jobs of bartending experience. After both jobs, I decieded to go to bartending school. I originally viewed bartending school as a waste of money, however the confidence I gained, techniques, and expansive knowledge of drinks I learned from bartending school was worth it in my opinion. BUT DO BEWARE THAT MOST EMPLOYERS LOOK FOR EXPERIENCE NOT A CERTIFICATE (some employers do ask for both tho). I felt that having experience and that extra "certificate"/"proof" of knowledge made me slightly more marketable when searching for jobs.

I hear you. In The Netherlands, basic establishments will select on flair and personality and availability with real experience as a fourth criterium but not a requirement. High class joints will demand experience, education will not be looked down upon by them. I'm now in my first month of bartending and decided to take a workshop to go more in depth. Working behind the bar is, to me and befriended bartenders, the only way to get the speed and routines down. Courses do have additional value to me, allowing fine tuning mixing skills under controlled circumstances. But the stress coping and (social) dynamics are soley to be found on the work floor. Same for working in a team. Another way to increase your foundation is to just experience the alcohol culture. For anecdotes to tell your guests or boss; go to a beer festival, visit a brewery, do a tasting. Go to a specialty store and ask for the foundations for a budget, mid level and high level speed rack. Read up on liqor and the specifics behind popular drinks, followed by more advanced drinks. For understanding the dynamics; ask your patron friends what their favourite mixes are and try them together. Or better, challenge yourself to mix those for them! F.i., my patron girlfriend really helped me by ordering a mojito over and over until I got it just right. Also, go out with friends, ask them why they stopped visiting that one place and now only chill at the other. Then go and compare the two for yourself. When it's quiet in a bar, ask bartenders what they like and dislike about their work place, or "what they'd like to improve" (more subtle). Ask them for their specialty mix as well to get the fine taste footprint on your buds. Chances are they'd share their recipe if you show appreciation. Before you know it, you'll have gained a lot of practical insights into what makes a bar nice and what could make it impopular.

I went to bartending school when I was 20 so I could apply for a job right away at 21 and it did help me to get the job. Ultimately, I don't think I learned anything there that I couldn't have learned on the job. It was fun and it did help with my confidence; I had my liquor license on hand and knew what to expect. I also have a cool diploma to hang on the wall in my home office, haha.

Schools don’t tell you that you NEED to know those drinks. My instructors straight up said half of these you’ll A never make or B not need to know but hey why not QUICKLY go over them. They teach you concept. And as you just said “The only way to learn a bar is to work BEHIND the bar” which at bartending schools they are set up exactly like a real bar to give you that feel. 👍🏽

I paid for school and made the money I spent back in 2 weekends. It was worth it. My instructor was a 69 year old sicilian italian woman. She has been behind the bar since she was 13 years old. Priceless. She knows everything, has a great reputation and has wisdom. You just build on your own after graduation. Building relationships is important to any success, especially if the relationship pushes your career. Now I bartend public and private events. She helped me reach that status. 👽💖

True, not necessary. But the knowledge I got from it helped me get the bartender position 2 weeks after I started as a server for the first time in a restaurant. I knew more than the bartenders that had already been there for 3 years

Not surprised, most untrained bartenders know only the drinks or subject matter they've experienced in the establishment(s) they've worked in, and is a perfect example of why it definitely can be a worthy investment.

I agree 100%, what bartending school did for me was give me confidence as far as cocktail recipes. It was only a few hundred dollars though, so I don't feel like I got ripped off or anything. That confidence builder and practice was def a good thing. The biggest help was previous serving experience and this channel has helped refresh things I may have forgotten, and explained things I didn't know, almost like a mentor.

I'm going through Bartending school now and I'm Almost done and to me I'm learning a lot, and it does give me confidence for when I do become a bartending. I actually think its great having that knowledge before I go out there in the real world, lol.

Great video! I agree completely. I went to a bartending school and got a lot out of it. It wasn't very expensive and was a 2 week course about 4 hours a day. Like you said, confidence was the biggest thing I got from it. My frustration came when I was promised they had positions they could fit us into at bars. This was absolutely not true. I applied to every bar I could find with no luck. In fact, I found that if a bar tending position became available, there were numerous bar backs within the establishment already lined up for it or waiter or waitresses wanting it. I was an outsider and even with the "school diploma" I didn't know that places speciality drinks or menu. So I switched to looking for new restaurants about to open, and that was were I was able to finally get a job bartending. Because I had no one ahead of me and we were ALL new and I had a diploma instead of experience. Albeit I was the day shift bartender at a restaurant and the experienced bartenders got the evening shifts. I was at least in the industry. In retrospect, I would say, find the place you want to work at and start wherever you can there. Be a waiter or waitress, bar back something to get your foothold in there and make it know you want a bartending position. I enjoy your videos and insights. Keep it up! 👍🏼

The only state that requires a bartender to be licensed is Wisconsin. I went to a bartending school many years ago and quickly got a job within about a week working at a sports bar 3 days and 2 nights. I didn't make more than $75.00 on my busiest nights but that was back in the 1980's so, $75.00 would be like $300.00 now. From there I moved on to work in clubs and hotels making a lot of money. So, in my case bartending school was a good fit. I'm in my early 50's and still a bartender!

I went to a bar tending school and found out that whilst the knowledge of basic equipment, pouring and making drinks was useful for someone that hadn't done anything like that before, actually getting a job purely on the certificate was not. Ended up bar-backing for a local nightclub for 10 months before i stepped into the bar which i've now been doing for 2 years. In my experience that's definitely the best way to go as you get a better understanding of how the bar works behind the scenes compared to others that start bar tending straight away.

I went to two different bartending school with three years between them and was also able to walk into another one for a pour session off of my bartender coach's recommendation. The number 1 problem with most bartending schools is that they teach too much knowledge and at times that intimidates students rather than giving them confidence. No knock on bartending school. I went to two... But the first one required me to learn 100+ drinks which is "overwhelming". The second one only required me to learn the basic 35-40 that I would need across most places. I had my interview at a nightclub here in Hollywood, CA last week and basically got the job although I haven't gone through the training yet. And from what I have observed from the bartenders at my nightclub on a regular night walk in as a patron is that "YOU DO LITERALLY ONLY NEED TO KNOW THE BASIC 35-40 DRINKS IF NOT LESS" (most of which can be lumped into "similarities" categories like Iced Teas, the Tropics like vodka/cran [which is self-explanatory], some classics like martini/cosmo/manhattan and the mixed shots). I've heard people getting hired at a nightclub with a "FIVE-DRINK" knowledge base. In my place the speed rack is only filled with the essentials, the back wall has a very limited supply of secondary stuff (that someone maaaaaaayyyyyyy order once in a blue moon), they are only pouring vodka/cranberries and similar type drinks all night long and if u ever need to make an obscure recipe drink u can always look it up in the back for a minute. Learn your basics, do some pour practice with friends and just be confident in that you will find a way to navigate the small situations in whatever place it is that you are going to be working at on the job. Nothing is more important than the repetition and learning on the job.

I went to bartending school and loved every minute of it. i learned alot and they told us all before we even paid for the class, that we didn't have to have the training but it would help us learn the basics. we were taught alot of common drinks and had to memorize some for the test we took on the last day. I would have avoided changing a keg at all cost if it wasn't for bartending school. The school also said they could not guarantee a job but they would be more than glad to assist us as much as possible. we were all given a "cheat sheet" as well to help us out when we finally did first step out into field.

I personally have been to a bartender school because I was looking for part time work at a upscale hotel 🏨. I understood that there was no promises of employment because of a certificate. You do however receive practice on speed pouring and drink cocktails. All of which you cannot get as a bar back. Plus you can practice multitasking as well. It has its benefits.

Great video! I'm not an advocate for bartending school, but having someone that knows what they're doing is a big help. I personally always liken it to going to the gym; sure you can find the info by searching the internet for exercises, but a personal trainer/someone experienced showing you exactly what to do saves you a ton of time and hopefully helps you not develop bad habits.

I just started bartending class, it’s for 2 weeks and today is my last day. So far everything said in the video is true I love the content. My biggest concern is I am a slow learner and they just expect you to know everything in 2 weeks. Other than that they have offered me a job, but I’m still worried about getting all the drink repipes down. I’m looking for more videos on drink recipes, basics, tips and tricks. Thanks in advance

Hi Jason, I'm currently going to a school just finished my first weekend and next weekend I complete the course. It wasn't too bad on price only 250 but I am learning allot and the big thing I am building confidence which is something important for me to be able to work in a bar. Also note with that and your videos I am feeling more each and everyday confident that I will be a great bartender. Thank you so much for what you do and I appreciate all your lessons and have learned so much in the short while I've been practicing. 🤘😁👍

I am now 2 months into bar backing and I've been fortunate to have a great team that teaches me and lets me make drinks. I'm still learning and need to learn more but I'm great with customers and have a great understanding of our bar now so I just ask what goes into a specific drink and can make it pretty easily now. Plus, I'm making pretty good money as a bar back while going to school anyways. Getting paid well to bar back and learn on the job seems to me a much better way than spending the money for a class. I already spend a bunch of money on my college education anyways lol.

Bartending School was the absolute best experience of my life! It was in Dublin through the European Bartending School. I met people I'll be friends with forever from all around the world! The school was amazing and worth every penny and I got a job right out the gate at dive bar country saloon and went from there to a fancy craft cocktail bar. I couldn't have been able to do that without the training of many different settings. Experience only allows you knowledge of what you've experienced so far. I was taught in everything. All the spirits wines, beers, liqueurs, whiskeys all of it! School all the way! Out with the old and in with the new!

I went to a bartending school and yes the big thing you get from it is confidence but it's also really fun! I had a lot of stuff for free because I've been in the service business since I was 13 (10years now) but I still learn some stuff other than just recipes and free pour. I would recommend a bartender school if you can afford it and want a fun experience as well as getting to know if bartending suits you.

Ive been considering becoming a bartender for quite some time now. But with having kids and a family and barely having any experience in the restaurant business. I always felt like it was impossible. My current job is dirty and hard work. I'm getting tired of busting ass night after night when theres much more better opportunities out there. Which is why I want to bartend. I like to socialize, and interact and serve people. I enjoy it. Some days I have days where I hate people, but for a majority of my days I enjoy being around people. I just discovered your channel a couple of hours ago because I took the night off work. And now I'm contemplating trying it out again. But I either need to practice mixing drinks or something. Because I'm also a musician. So confidence and showmanship is a must for that. Any suggestions as to how I can get started practicing with the little amounts of alcohol I have available to practice with?

I work for a CATERING company that was friends with the owner & send/forced me into PBSA(our city's Bartending school) it help somewhat but I made customer connection with the other students instead of the promised knowledge to serve any drink

I started working in restaurants and bars a few years back and after one year of service I must say that though the knowledge you get from practice in the field, you cant get any better withouth training and outside stimuly. -Nevertheless; there is supervisors who give an effort in staff training- And you got supervisors who dont. One positive thing about the school is that it gave me some more passion about what I do for a living...

I had a question about how to go about being an instructor though, I know you mentioned that you don't necessarily need a bartending license but how do most instructors become instructors? I have such a big passion for bartending and lots of experience so now I'd like to teach others because it's something I really love to do

I did 2 years at cambridge culinary school in Massachusetts, then did the bartending program was within the same school so i took the course, why not. Yes you probably don't need to go to school to make drinks but it couldn't hurt.

lol I graduated a FL bartending school just because(memorized a lot of drinks and mixing methods is all)... Had no intention of working it... Owners care about looks, personality, and experience; skill takes a back seat to all of that. I actually tried to get some jobs and small rural bars and no luck cause they want someone who can sale the experience and I can just do the work...

On the job training is one way in for sure. But a few weeks of "bartending school" will probably teach a lot to start you off and get a base of knowledge. Even with that, you would likely still start as a barback but might move up quicker.

Lmao but you would've made up the money fast if you got right into bartending. As opposed to working extremely hard for half the pay and sacrificing your dignity just for the possibility of the owner giving you that bartending position. Just lmao for people that go to barback route. I know lots of bartenders and only one of then ever barbacked.

for me personally, i prefer to take a private course with a bartender that had won international or regional competition. It is cheaper, and they taught it in details and they are also give feedback to our cocktail in taste basis and they will teach us how the technique on basic stuffs (like ice condition, liqueur temperature, room temperature, glass temperature, shake technique, stir technique, and more), and also they (depends on the person) how to deal with people and what cocktail to offer based on their look. I have never been to bartending school though.

I Work in a local bar for 2 years and want to start my own Business in a couple of years. I dont really know whether going to a bartending school makes me a better bartender than I am right in this moment or helps me turning my dream into reality.

My grandpa was a bartender in Buffalo he passed away in 2001 unfortunately, I don't know why but ever since I heard of this I wanted to be a bartender for a while. He was really good at it too and my parents told me l'm like him. Also, I've been told by my friends that I have to personality for it, I'm a people person, talkative and just try to make the most of it. Currently I'm 18, taking a degree that isn't for me and l live in NY which still allows my kids age to bartend and l like that. My parents and l discussed lf l can get a full time job or go to a school for something l like l can withdrawl from my current school major. Anybody got advice? TLDR; I hate my major in college, lm allowed to withdrawal from it if l find something l like and with my personality l feel l could be good at this, now to convince my parents. Thank you!

I do the bar practice from time to time. I have a little pocket notebook I keep a bunch of drink recipes in that I use from time to time when someone orders somthing off menu I may not remember. I will set myself up with bottles I've filled with water and give them the notebook and have them order drinks from me and quiz me on it

Would you recommend it for someone like me, who wants to do the school for the experience of learning new things and meeting new people? I don't want to go straight into a bartending job though as I want to get a job with my university degree instead, but rather It would be nice to have the knowledge if I ever wanted to put it to use it the future

I've seen this from literally every angle. The thing with bar tending schools - is that they staff for DIFFERENT TYPES OF JOBS. Of course any person can step into any corner bar and someone will let them give it a try. Of course there's that. For more established places like Olive Garden or Hooters there's usually 24 wait staff and bar backs vying for the SAME next bartender position. So it's up to you if you want to chance your TIME that way or CHANCE your money at a school. Bar tending schools staff for things like theaters, private parties, events, emergencies, (places where they are not serving alcohol every night to merit having an ongoing hired bar staff). I would argue that in New York, Miami, Chicago, Vegas and LA - it doesn't hurt to have one extra avenue in. You could try both and whatever works - great. Anywhere else - if you have the time for trial and error - more than the money to kick around. Then yes - of course try it on your own.

When I see other bartenders to say that they are licensed I am always so confused because I keep thinking where are they getting his license from LOL I didn’t go to bartending school and sometimes I think about going but honestly I feel like you can get just as much experience from being out in the field. However some people work better in a structured environment which is why you don’t really say bartending schools are crappy but if you’re a person who needs to be taught in a certain type of environment and to have things broken down to you a bartender school may be the best place for you to go to.

I still don't see how you can learn 150 drinks in say one month for 700 bucks so i would say i guess it just makes you feel important or proud you made it through the course and they say they help you get a job anywhere but every place wants experience

I have been working as a bar back for like 3 years in Chicago, in all the places I worked before they don't give me opportunity to grow as a bartender, I'm not an expert on cocktails but I know pretty well the basics, I was thinking attending to a bartending school so I can learn more than on my actual job. please let me know if you got any advise for me.

@@xazenx Find the systems, making drinks is all about balancing flavors so you can often find some type of ¨rule¨, for example, a drink with hard liquor as well as some sweet liquor often follow a 4 2 3 1 where 4 is hard liquor 2 is sweet liquor 3 is citrus and 1 is suger like simple syrup

I have got several jobs that involved no training, show up and clock in day one with a busy bar is the norm for places trying to weed out people that cant hang, sink or swim

More common with experienced bartenders attracted to busy establishments for sure, but not really for first timers. Most of the BP viewers are just starting out so they are unlikely to be hired for positions of the "show-up-and-go" variety. But agreed, can be common as you work your way up the bartending food chain.

You are right. why go to a bartending school while you could volunteer at one of the bars for 3-4 weeks where you can learn everything for free. If you just walk in and tell the manager that you wanna volunteer for short period, why would he mind? you work for him for free, and you learn. It is a win-win situation. Right??

Sounds good in theory, and while I'm sure it can happen, I've never heard of that going down. It's a very serious liability for an establishment to serve alcohol, much less let someone who isn't an employee serve alcohol, so I doubt you'll find too many places that will jump to give you that opportunity. However, if you could find it, then obviously you're learning while doing exactly the job you are hoping for. Let me know if you've seen that anywhere

They're not just hiring people for labor, they're hiring experienced people because the sad truth of the matter is that in almost any labor field of work, employers don't care about training & don't want to invest any time on people who have no experience.

I totally agree with everything you've said. Im currently going to one in Tampa Bay.. Im a little more harsh on that you don't need it... unless you have the money. I am not sure how you can learn what you "need" to learn in 2 weeks. What subject in what grade do you learn for only 2 weeks and then take a 60-70 question test. Yes I know more then I did when I started but it is way over priced . In addition to a 25 dollar book with many typos . I will be making a video of my experience as well. If anything, spend your money on Safeserv.

Sounds good in theory yes, and could maybe be possible if you had a really close relationship (emphasize CLOSE) with an establishment owner… but when you realize how busy most bars are, plus it’s a liability for them to have a non-employee mucking around with stuff, plus it would be taking away an employees time (which equals money) to show you stuff and you can understand why that type of scenario just isn’t realistic in most situations. Better to take a position somewhere else in the establishment and you’d be much more likely to get that opportunity to play and learn.

Marie Eugene I'd say get some experience in direct customer service. Be it in a store, front office, sports club, or as an event hostess or running tables at a restaurant. Managing social attention is what a bartender needs, as I'm finding out now. If that's obvious on your resumé, the bar manager will be more likely to hire. The recipies will come later. If your in a culturally mixed or tourist-laden area, speaking a second or third local language is a benefit.

i dont know if anyone will reply to this but since years i've wanted to become a great bartender (something more then a dude who makes a jack n coke and serves a good beer) and im really considering on going to the EBS (European Bartending School) and in total it might cost me around 2500 euro, has anyone everbeen there and took the 4 week course? because if im gonna spend over 2K on this i want it to be good and not a waste of money.

uhm.. in norway there is a kind of licenced thing. not evryone is actually allowed to serve drinks O___O you've either have had to take this test for alcoholic beverages or taken the school course for resturants and hotelservices with that test to sell someone just a canned beer XD

I mean, congratulation to all those people that magically knew all the drinks before being told how to do it and that were great at the bar too. I personally heard that so many times (you don’t need a license to be a bartender or to learn the drinks or I’ll teach you and so and so…) and then ended up being a waitress so many times and was never told by anyone. Guys just learn your techniques, drinks, knowledge and practice through any school and then apply. Do it the right way because it is very useful not a waste

Any way you can invest in yourself and your education is to your benefit. I went to bartending school and I had WAY better technique and knowledge than every bartender I worked with. Hell a lot of the bartenders I worked with had no idea how to use a jigger or how to properly free pour

Apply for a part-time job at a deli making sandwiches. On a practical level there is very little difference in between making sandwiches and making drinks (you are just adding ingredients to bread instead of a glass). You get work experience not only in production behind a counter, which is effectively a bar, but customer service and money handling experience as well. When you turn 18 pick up a server or barback position. All this time learn drink recipes. By the time you turn 21 you will have a solid resume and be an awesome bartender. It worked for me, good luck!

I studied in the bartending school in Russia, and it works exactly like you said but they also gave me a lot of theoretical knowllege that is simply interesting but not that useful I suppose, and they also offered me a job in a bar for two weeks(like practice) with the possibility to continue work there if they like me. Worth it, i suppose

NYC and paid 500$ in one of the crappiest schools. Crappy but part My fault because I didn't do My research and shop around. Hidden the fact that between squeezing around 5-7 bar sections or units When there 10-12 which Are un-stocked, To add that while making said drinks you have make vats of colored combos to refill bottles, when you come back someone stole your glassware do to shortage. That by the way are so beat up you can't see true colors and there little to no garnish but your imagination. I went for this 2 week class and with all the shit I was then to present going through I whimpt out of test. I've tried to get a job but they want a year and certificate. And Your saying all I needed was a 💯+ food handlers license, pocket manual and KZfaq?! WTF Thanks!

In Australia, it is a requirement to have a licence to serve alcohol in a licensed bar, restaurant. No one will hire you without it.

I feel your pain Antonette... but look on the bright side, the "certificate" they would/will give you isn't really going to help you get a job anyway, and you can still put on your resume that you've attended a bartending school... so f'it, just have fun and take what you can from it all without stressing yourself out. Maybe, but since most bartenders, like the VAST majority never set foot in a "school", they are still largely unnecessary. There are also very respected and reputable school like Pernod-Ricard's Barsmarts and the Diagio Bar Academy are leading edge and legit, my beef is mainly in the fly-by-night sketchy schools so prevalent around the US, selling little more than memorization of 100's of terribly created cocktails made with colored water. And in those instances, I stand by my assessments made here.
