Geek & Sundry

5 жыл бұрын

You know what they say: always keep your bases covered. We're taking that literally because this week a terrible painter (Will Friedle) is joined by a passable painter (Matt Mercer) to talk all about base coating!
Miniature figures can help a tabletop gaming session come to life, but painting those miniature figures is an acquired skill. Welcome to the Geek & Sundry Painters Guild! Host Will Friedle is joined by professional guests like Matthew Mercer and Elizabeth Beckley-Bradford to teach you the intricacies and techniques required to paint your own miniatures!

I'm loving this series. As a side note, try using two cups of rinse water: 1 for the standard colors and 1 for the metallics. This helps to avoid getting the random metal flake in to you non-metallic colors.

I use 2 cups to rinse, but more like a cleaning station where the first cup get rid of the majority of paint and the second helps ensure residual paint water doesn't affect my next color.

Once you start getting into tiny pointed brushes, it's better if you don't mix the paint with the tip of the brush. Mix it with the other end, or a stir stick or something. Getting paint at the base of the bristles is what causes brushes to splay out and lose their point over time (paint dries in between the hairs and expands the base) and it's kinda hard to clean. Better to mix with a separate object, and then only dip the tip of the brush into the paint - and then really rattle your brush around in the water after to get the paint out (and like they said don't "scrub" the brush on the bottom of the cup, speaking from experience, you'll instantly ruin a good pointed brush that way). You can be less careful with larger brushes for priming and washes and whatnot, but you must protect your precious little pointy brushes. They won't last forever, but they'll last a lot longer with a bit of care. I'm so glad this show is on KZfaq now, and that Matt is the first guest teacher.

We used to lick the brush "dry" after rinsing it, partly because it was easier just sticking it in your mouth, and partly because you could form the brush slightly with your tongue, easier than with the paper. This is where the non-toxic aspect of the paints was important XD

The paint will flow easier from your brush onto the mini and into the little nooks and cranies. Your coats will also get a smoother finish and you dont clog up al the details if your paint is thinner. Hope that helped a bit.

I know this came out a while ago, but the thought of washing in some sort of purple, green, or even sepia tone with some light drybrushing, can make that model look fantastic. (If you feel so emboldened, maybe some blood or rot coming from the mouth really pulls a piece together)

Only found this series a couple of days ago, but I'm very much enjoying seeing someone giving painting a try! I too have friends who don't want to because "they can't" or they tried once and were disappointed with the result - well, we've all started out beginners once and it's not like your skill is there from the first stroke... but it's not as difficult to hone as many people think, the only thing you really need to be comfortable with is the idea of spending some time on sitting at a table and disregard the outside buzz and hectic for an hour or two. Someone really needs to do a study on the positive effects for your cardiovascular system and mental health! ;-) One thing I'd recommend is maybe don't start with the miniature you really want to have painted - get a cheap box of minis you don't care about to get a feel for the brush and the behaviour of the paint, try thinning down the paint and slowing down the strokes when it comes to painting the border of the area you want to be in a specific colour. Maybe try blending two or more colours in a "wet palette" kind of style while painting, maybe give a wash a try, do whatever comes to your mind - if you don't care about the miniature, you're free to experiment, and your wrist and fingers will develop the familiarity with the movements while you're doing it, just like a new guitar player needs to learn to position his fingers on the strings. It's easier when you're younger, and it takes a little more time when you're older, but it's not impossible. Also, take a look at 12:22. See how Matt uses his little finger on the miniature for stability and control, while Will's hand is hanging in the air, tensing all muscles from his hand to his spine? That's stuff that comes instinctively the more time you invest, or you can pick it up from observing people who've been painting for some time.

It was wills very first time painting. I'm sure he will learn to thin his paint in a future episode. When I stated painting I didn't thin my paints right away, I painted a few guards and goblins from the reaper line to get the hang of using the brush. After several miniatures I started to thin my paint. I always tell people who have never painted before not to worry about thinning in the beginning.

Too late. You already said to knock a couple paints back. I have been waiting on someone to tell me I could so the moment you said it, they were gone. Note to self cadmium colors have a weird after taste.

Pro tip, keep your paint water cup away from your drink cup. Otherwise you WILL drink paint. Whether you want to or not.
