In the channels of southern Chile, fishermen taught me that if you are navigating a narrow place (channels or entrances to narrow bays) with poor visibility (night or fog) and a dolphin starts jumping on your bow, it is very likely that is showing you the right path.

That wooden trimaran at 9:08 was spotted in cabo verde islands on another sailing channel recently. I think he is from germany. goes to show you how little it takes to live the cruising lifestyle, although not as comfortably as others.

Montserrat: A flood of memories. My wife and I visited about 14 months prior to it blowing up. I remember going inside the volcano. It was quire dormant at the time; a few wispy fumeroles. Although we were bare boating, we flew from Guadeloupe. We purchased some Montserrat tapestries and flew back to Guadeloupe the same day.

when I sailed into St Ann in 1980 there were maybe 6 boats at anchor. No moorings. No fees etc etc. That was the time before GPS and all the great gadgets available today.

As someone who lives in St. Maarten I could have told you that between St. Maarten and St. Barths is rough. I went on a Cruise and between Martinique and Barbados the passengers were sleeping on the LIdo deck because we were so nauseous from the boat rocking. You look outside your window and you saw fishes, the water was so high.

They won the Americas cup with a glass boat when the US team said "only a cheat would make a boat out of glass. By the next event they were ALL made of glass. Funny I recognized the tackle shop you were in on Martinique. Got some lures and a Yoyo there before an Atlantic crossing, but couldn’t run the line because it kept getting attacked by birds. And definitely had the lee motoring and compression zone sailing experience when going through the windward islands. Luckily not 25 knots . . .

The dolphin might like how the light from your flashlight sparkles in the water. I used to know a pod in Santa Monica Bay off Palos Verdes. I was sea kayaking a couple times a week, going out five nmiles to a buoy and back. The pod, common dolphins, was easily identified because one of them liked leaping out of the water and landing on its left side. So Lefty's Pod. (i suspect it had an itch on that side.) I built a second wooden kayak, a bit longer, narrower - to be faster - it wasn't. I don't think from 50 yards I could spot the difference between it and the first one. Lefty's Pod was at least a half mile away but made a beeline for me. Initially I thought they just decided to head this way. Nope, they came right to me, dove under me. Okay, that happens. But as soon as they passed me they vectored off in another direction. So they had come to check me out. We're they curious about the new 'yak? A week later I came back. The kayak was new. It had two foam bulkheads, cut out a 4" block of medium density foam an inch bigger than the hull. They were so tight it took me an hour with a mallet to hammer them in. I thought that I could go out, see if I need more or less room, hammer them to that position and then caulk them. I got blindsided by a reflected wave and flipped. The entire kayak filled up with water like the bulkheads weren't there. I was screwed. I called the lifeguards. But then I spotted Lefty's Pod heading straight for me. Is this going to be like Flipper where the dolphins come to the rescue? They right to me, dove, took a look and then changed course. So they were curious, but it wasn't TV. When I lifeguards hauled me out, they were near by fishing. Most of the time dolphins or sea lions seem uninterested in me in my kayaks. Then I got a waterproof camera. The first ten times I stuck it in the water when critters were about, seven of the shots included dolphins or sea lions swimming sideways looking up.

If you open a marine business down there, let me know! I owned a marine store, power boats, and worked in a store that catered to the sailing community so I know quite a bit about sales, parts and service! I’d move in a heartbeat!

As a slow travel on land I would say that getting every single thing out of weach place you visit is A) Stressful & B) a waste of time!

My understanding is that dolphins can’t see you as well at night time as they can during the day. So they jump to get a better view. Who knows If that’s right or not.

What are the theories to why dolphins jump in general is that they're doing it to get rid of parasites. So it might be those dolphins that night parasite, or some other kind of itchy spot or something on their skin when they were jumping so that the impact of the water would help alleviate The problem.

Hey!!! I can’t say why they jump during the night but the way he did it seems to be a spinner dolphin. The can rotate up to 7 times on its on axis and over and over again like this one did. Some studies show that they do it for communication because the sound produced inside of the water is louder than the whistle! I wish I could see more of the dolphin but if you did better than the video, did they had like 3 colors??? A dark gray on the top, a lighter in the middle and like white belly? And a long and thin nostrils???

What’s up with these people. They have a small child standing near the transom WITHOUT life jacket or harness (as far as I can see). And this not the first time. And in a previous video when they are pulling in a fish (and sharp lure) a kid is standing right there and almost gets smacked in the face when the fish and arm come flying up. As a parent who has sailed (quite extensively) with my own 2 children, I can say these types of risks do jot demonstrate good seamanship. I don’t care how far they have sailed. Just poor seamanship
