The Knysna Heads. Once declared by the British Navy as the most dangerous harbor entrances in the world, with treacherous reefs, strong currents, and constantly changing tides making it a formidable obstacle for any sailor. The narrow channel between the cliffs and the presence of numerous rocks and underwater hazards have resulted in many shipwrecks and maritime disasters over the years, earning the Knysna Heads a reputation for being one of the most challenging and perilous passages in the world.

I love the fact that you guys let your kids embrace the sailing life instead of hovering and protecting at every turn. I was watching a documentary of a famous captain in the early 1900’s. The working crew was rounding Cape Horn and his little boy and girl were swinging from the rigging. It looked so natural, but I’m sure it wouldn’t be allowed today.

The initial footage of the approach had me clenching so hard the seat cover nearly came off. Glad you're in safe harbour. Stunning footage and yes, 4am is no time for civilised human beings to be up and about, unless they've been out clubbing the night before. The Atlantic awaits!

Amazing, I love to stand up at the look out and watch Knysna Heads! We'll be travelling through Knysna tomorrow on our way to Plettenberg Bay. Enjoy Knysna, lovely town. Very touristy. The N2 motorway is called the Garden Route for a reason.

*_ Sailed into Knysna a couple of times and as the guy said, the best time is an hour before High and the Transit markers are easy to spot, I found that once you were through the heads the channel in the lagoon to the Yacht Club/Harbour was more gnarley than the actual entrance. _*

Wow I don't think I've ever gotten a episode when it was so new !! Yeah!. I just got caught up on my episodes I had to go look for you my feed didn't bring you up?!. I have watched religiously for the past ?? 4 plus years so couldn't understand where you were 😀. Love your channel love the honesty you bring to boat or should I say Cat life. The babies are adorable I love how Willa takes it all so casually she's a true sailor. I often think about the view she has of the world I have 5 daughters and was in the USAF for about 10 years so a few of them remember seeing other parts of the world that are a bit more exciting than your average child sees. But Willa has a front row seat to adventure ! she will be a well rounded lil person that's for sure. Ok I've rattled on enough just so excited to see I received your new episode in the first 6 minutes of it being up and wanted to say HELLO, be safe and send my love you guys are so awesome and add so much to my life just knowing that people are out there taking risks, doing the unusual and I can tag right along helps keep my secret adventure spirit alive and one day soon I hope to set sail on things I've wanted to do but just haven't given it my attention. Normal, boring keeps us tied down long after we would have set off if the "if only"'s" hadn't gotten in the way. Bless you all ❤️!.

Even experienced skippers have been caught out on flat days in the Knysna Heads. It’s the unexpected freak wave that can wipe a boat out. I’ve sailed my 21’ in and out a few times. It’s never ‘easy.’ Uneventful perhaps, but not easy ….

I watched the Pardeys sail through the Knysna Heads. I’ve always gone through with furled sails under engine. It can get very interesting when the weather starts pumping - usually resulting in the Heads being closed. We actually surfed through on one occasion at over 20 knots - heart in mouth stuff.

Another great episode. Since i have been watching a lot sailing channels over the years and everyone having babies i thought end of channels. But to my suprise watching the children grow in real time is great experience for the veiwer. Just a example, watching Willa on the outboard motor made me laugh. they learn so quick. Cheers

A good sense of humor makes life much better so keep it up. 🙂 One of my mottoes in life is: if it doesn't kill you, your learn from it, laugh at it, and keep on trucking. You learn from it to improve, laugh at it to keep it from getting you down, and keep on trucking to keep it from stopping you. At almost 74, I have found it works. 🙂 When are you going to teach your girls to swim for their sake?

I traveled from Texas to East London in June and July for the Sardine run. Thousands upon thousands of common dolphins rounding up bait balls. Simons town is a wonderful place. You definitely should travel out to seal island to see the 65k seals that live there and if lucky a Great White predation of a seal.

Consider using 2 tack lines from launching the asymmetrical. It allows you to use the Genoa to shield the inlet of the asymmetrical coupled with full engine throttle to douse / sock the sail by pulling the tack behind the genoa. Those winds on SA coast come up quick and makes it difficult if not impossible to drop asymmetrical when the winds rapidly increase to over 20kts. Expect those conditions to arise even more frequently as you head up north from Cape Town.

Great video. Have been following you as you have been moving along South Africa. We are on SC BEDOUIN. We went through Knysna heads in Jan 2005 with our cat and also found scary. We watched your spinnaker takedown and thought a technique we use to snuff it might help make easier. You need an appropriate sized Wichard Quick Release Snap Shackle "HR" w/ Large Bail attached to one of your lines (We use the tack line since we have an asym spinnaker.) Attach a small long line to the shackle tail and tie off to windlass cleat. When it comes time to take your spinnaker down, load up the down haul on the snuffer. Now pull the small line holding the shackle closed. It is designed to open under load. This will let that end fly free out in front of the boat. The snuffer will come down a good bit since you loaded it up. Now just pull it down with almost no load. Hope it works for you like it does for us. All the best. Bedouin

Hi Ben and Ashley, have you ever try to cross the spinnaker bow lines, means spinnaker port line goes on starboard bow and spinnaker starboard line goes on port bow. It’s should stabilised lateral movements of your spinnaker. We did that for 10 days during our crossing before approaching the Azores and it worked nicely. Fair wind guys. Cheers

Yip, very surprised, is it sailing practice not to wear life jackets? Many years ago, I sadly witnessed a drowning in the Heads following a capsizing of a small fishing boat, after being overrun by a wave. Life jackets were floating in the water.

Wow, yes, that does look dangerous. Almost as dangerous as my home port, Humboldt Bay, far northern California. I've been out in it as a news photographer (even though I'm an engineer, they couldn't find anyone who would go out and video the oil tankers ect caught on shoals because they had gone too far south in the harbor. I have even been out on a little crab boat. Our harbor is about the same waves but much narrower. You have to do it when the tides are favorable ! If they are not favorable I've seen huge waves at the entrance. There are two very narrow long jetties to supposedly make entering it a little safer but folks either get on the wrong side of the jetty or crash into the jetty on the way in. Yes, I remember East London mentioned when Delos was there, but they didn't even mention the dangerous harbor or video it that I can remember anyway. When you get your forecasts you must look at both models ? So yes, I have seen the scary situation where you can't get the spinnaker down because you waited too long. What is the best cruisers guide for the run down the coast ?
