Alcohol may help with the end grain but I found that too much alcohol tends to make measurements incorrect and adds to pieces being too short no matter how many times you cut them. The wood you used is so good looking and I think a solid top on this piece would make a beautiful island in a kitchen. Take care, jack

Hi Matt. Ex pat Aussie Electrician here. Live in US for 20yrs. In Metric countries especially in trades & engineering we would never say 13.3 cm. We would always say 133 mm. or 133 'mill'. Everything is in mm even if measuring the wing span of an airliner. Just one more reason why metric is superior 😂

I used a tenoner and mortisers 50 or more years old in about 1986. Either way works. Though it's considered crude by some to even consider it, I would just use dominos, screws or bolts to make a bench and it will be as good as yours. Even cruder is mine which is solid and put together with lags and landscape timbers. I'm Neanerthal.

Matthew please do not misunderstand what I’m saying. I think you did an absolutely amazing job on building this workbench. My question is why use such thick pieces of wood. What you have built is not a workbench but a look at bench. It’s to nice to scratch up and get paint on, again I think you built a piece of art. It’s to nice to use and it’s going to take 2-3 people to move it because it’s got to be heavy.

The top is only 3/4” thicker than mine; otherwise it’s identical. The mass makes it ideal for handtool work

Superb video on the construction of a (basic) split top Roubo workbench! All aspects of the build , from milling of the raw lumber using amazing machinery to the subsequent hand tool processes were great to see and learn from. Future proposed content relating to additional features that can be incorporated in the build will be great to see too. Thanks so much for providing this video- it is most inspiring and highly informative too for those of us interested in joinery and cabinet making!

41:59 Sanding things into square is treated as a dirty little secret, but it shouldn’t be. I’ve suggested this a few times to people who were worried about the fence on their shooting boards and didn’t have a shoulder plane: just take a square stick of wood, glue sandpaper to it and sand your fence square, no need for expensive tools - and no need for adjustable fences that might move. Real light bulb moment for some, as it was for me.
