Hi all,
This is a short, 10-minute discussion in a morning class in answer to the question: "Should I bring my feet together or keep them apart when I step?"
The answer is BOTH! But I give the simplest answer, explaining why one is taught more frequently than the other.
Note that as I discuss initiation, I am exclusively talking about it from the hip perspective; there is and always should be a leg drive from the floor as well; it is just irrelevant to the conversation for today.
Hope you enjoy!!
JD Swanson, 6th Dan

Interesting perspectives there. How much does body type play in this? Some people are heavier built, some are relatively thin so as they progress through karate they naturally adapt. I think it was Yahara sensei said “you make karate fit you”

Body types certainly does play a role in everything karate. Yahara is 100% correct. As you know, there are very few people who can move the way Yehara Sensei does, and forcing it beyond one's capability can lead to long term damage... because... many of us are simply not built like him. BUT we can take the principals of what he is doing, integrate it across what we know and have learned and then make it right for us. That is not to make it easy, quite he contrary, rather do what they ask, (not just mentally but physically), then interpret it through your lens (and especially for advanced practitioners, we should know what we can and can't do) and then do as we adapt. You are totally right! With this question, I am answering at a basic level the question why are different instructors teaching two different things in two ways. Part will be dogma, part will be body type, good instructors will be teaching on principle, and better instructors will teach to the person they have in front of them taking into account all of the above but overlaying taht to what the student needs and where they are at.
