Comic icon David Finch is here to teach you how to master one of the most important elements of making dynamic comic art-- shading. He’ll take you through the steps of making effective shadows, and explain the difference between different types of shadows, like cast shadows and body shadows. If you found this lesson useful and want to learn more about making your own comics, check out David’s full course at www.proko.com/comicpage

The limbic system doesn't care about logic philosophy and rhetoric. It wants what feels good. People overdosing on sidewalks aren't insane. The part that knows what you should do and the part that guides what you actually do aren't connected. You have to make drawing your addiction. This means giving up your phone and the internet. If you get on your phone when you wake up and again when you take a break, I promise you're hard wiring yourself to hate drawing. The solution is don't touch your phone in the morning, not even to check the time. Eat breakfast and get your coffee and whatever and when that sense of boredom creeps in, that's when you draw. Your brain is going to fight hard to get you to do anything else on your breaks (every 20-25 minutes and stop when you're excited, don't keep pushing into frustration) but it's vital you create a loop where you're enjoying drawing and wanting to get back to it on your breaks. Jung's philosophies on psychology are good for a lasting understanding of yourself but drawing is simple behavioral psychology: create an environment where the thing you want to get good at is the most fun thing in the room. P.S. Reward systems are the most flawed thing society has came up with. Doing something hard then doing something fun isn't rewarding the difficult behavior it's rewarding the fact that you quit doing it. That's exactly how Pavlov would train a person to hate drawing

the way you draw the faces so effortlessly is amazing. I can't do that without very detailed guidelines unless i have a photo reference! You're amazing!

Another way to get a better idea of toning is to have a miniature face sculpture, an action figure from the shop would work. Observing and learning the toning by placing the light from multiple angles also helps a lot. This tutorial gives a very good explanation of prioritizing different shadows. It is also necessary to have a good idea about the way the muscles are distributed over the face. Basically, face anatomy, for toning faces.

To me comic shading is like negative space...instead of drawing a shape and shading the light, you use the shading to give the illusion of a shape and ignore all the logic of light
