I have fished for 52 years. Fish will bite just about anything when feeding. Some fishing spots, the fish one bite at specific times. You can fish for hours and not get a bite or follow. Soon as the fish come on, they bites for awhile than just stop, nothing. That's why it's called fishing, not catching.
@FishingwithNat

True - feeding windows are pretty common. We try to convince ourselves that all kinds of tiny "secrets" are the key to hauling in loads of fish every time we go out, but even professionals have plenty of days where they can't catch a thing.

I was fascinated by the number of these words that had a variant usage from other regions or in literature. Others (like blatherskyte) are archaic or out of usage in the language in the main but preserved in Appalachian English. I also got to wondering about the etymology of the words. "Stogging" is a word I encountered somewhere in the past (probably a book). It wasn't until I watched this today that it occurred to me it could easily be a modification of "stalking." Don't know, but world love to learn.

I find mono the best frog line, as that little bit of stretch helps me out. Braid no stretch you can set the hook preemptively. Whatcha think?
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 2 ай бұрын
I like having a mono leader too, or even fluoro. The little bit of stretch is nice, but the bigger reason around here is that I could get a strike from a pike or musky at any time and they will slice right through braid.

At this time of year, you'll want to slow down a lot with the frog retrieve, or move toward another type of bait. Topwater fishing really slows down in November unless you're in the south.

I dont know if you still read comments here, but what if the frog has a hole where the hook and (in my case) the spinner/small spoon is portruding out of? I tested in in my aquarium, dragging it back and forth, and it gets fill up with water and eventually no longer buoyant.
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 8 ай бұрын
All frogs have a small hole where the hooks come out, but the hole is small enough that the air inside the frog is trapped and water doesn't get in. But if the hole gets stretched during twitches or if another hole develops, the frog can lose its buoyancy and you'll have to squeeze the water out every couple of casts.

@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 10 ай бұрын
You can but you will miss a lot more strikes, and the fish will be more likely get you caught up in the vegetation because of the huge amount of stretch with monofilament. I have caught fish on frogs with monofilament though if it's all I have with me at the time.

There are various frogs with kicking legs that make popping sounds, or there are popping frogs that have a small scoop on the front and they spit water when twitched. I show both of those frogs in action during the video. You could search for "popper frog" or "kicking frog" online and I'm sure you'll find some options.

Spinning reels have lower gear ratio ? While this may be true most spinning reels bring in just as much line if not more per spin of the handle and since their drag is not dependent on the gearing ratio (a baitcaster with high gear ratio can make less drag than one with low gear ratio) you can have both high gear ratio and lots of drag, making it idea for frog fishing
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for the discussion. You bring up a good point, and even the diameter of the spool can also impact the recovery rate of the line. I agree that spinning reels can be well-suited to frog fishing, and I use both spinning and baitcasters for frog fishing with equal results.

Replacement arrived!By the way, I did forget to mention that the original lure did have a decent strike however as most anglers will attest you can get a hit kzfaq.infoUgkxCbNOWAGmn6nfbCbJDmasvBq7J38KZNw2 and fish will hang on and release lure. I used the replacement lure yesterday and ran thru a Shimano Waxwing, Kastmaster, Bobber (set to sink). I found the does run deep (I casting on the flats 3.5'). Make sure you adjust your rate of retrieve and rod tip angle (up) to prevent getting snagged on bottom. Used it a couple of times and action was very lifelike (looked like local bait fish for trevally), craftsmanship very good....however eyeball fell out. I asked for replacement and it is on it's way! It was very easy to change out treble to single inline hook.

That happens all the time after catching a fish. You just need to rotate the hooks back up to the top. You may have to squeeze the body a bit or pull the legs up and over the hooks again. It's hard to describe but if you give it a try, you'll figure it out.

I have a genuine question: I always hear that you need a heavy powered rod for frogging. Is this solely due to vegetation, or does it have to do with the double hook (meaning more power needed for hookset)? I fish with hollow-body frogs in places with no vegetation with a Medium Heavy rod. Will setting the hooks with a frog lure harm my rod at this power?
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 10 ай бұрын
It won't harm your rod. I've caught bass on a medium-light with frogs before. But a medium-heavy or heavy rod gives you more leverage and power to get that fish up on top of the vegetation. The large hooks do require some good power to get a good hookset, but the biggest reason for the heavy powered rod is to drag the fish out before they wrap you up in a ton of plants.

@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 10 ай бұрын
Fish on a weekday! 😆 Seriously though, look for quieter bays where the motorboat traffic doesn't stir things up and pile up chopped vegetation. And use a thick leader so the pike and muskies don't take your frog.
@ryancastner1407
@ryancastner1407 10 ай бұрын
@@FishingwithNat you think frog on leader is good move? I will surely try. Any other lure suggestions for when I mix it up?
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat 10 ай бұрын
@ryancastner1407 I always use leaders with frogs because there are so many pike and muskies around. In the south where those species aren't very common, braided line tied directly to a frog isn't a problem. That said, a stiff leader of fluoro or mono will affect a frog's action a bit, especially if you're trying to do a walk-the-dog action. I still stick with using a leader though.

No, hollow-body frogs are usually made of rubber, plus the weight of the thick double hook and wire, so they are pretty heavy on their own.

Can frogs still be used hood with 6 pound mono line? I’m too lazy to change line
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat Жыл бұрын
They can, but you will have a harder time setting the hook with the high stretch of mono, and it will be hard to drive the large hooks in with a light setup like that. Also, if the fish gets into the plants, you'll be stuck and not able to get it out.

@@FishingwithNat I go trout fishing and bass fishing and only have one rod so I want thin line so what would be a good middle ground for bass and trout fishing?
@FishingwithNat
@FishingwithNat Жыл бұрын
@@BooneTheKing Light line is definitely best for trout fishing. Frog fishing requires pretty heavy line though. If you really want to target bass and trout with a single rod, I'd suggest 15lb or 20lb braid and you could add a light leader when fishing for trout (4lb or 6lb mono or fluoro). You still might get into trouble if you are casting into heavy lily pads, but you should be fine fishing on the edge of pads/vegetation or over the top of submergent vegetation. How heavy is the rod you're using?

A word off caution. I have an older log cabin on a small lake. After an idiot working the lawn shorelines by tossing his frog on shore and hopping it into the water my Labrador caught it as the moron tried to jerk it away. It was a nightmare resulting in a trip to the veterinarian and anesthesia.

Wouldn't the leader defeat the purpose of 65 pound braid. Yes let's use 65 pound braid but where it's need to be strongest we'll make it half as strong if that..
@FishingwithNat

Yes, a weaker leader would absolutely defeat the purpose of a stronger main line when fishing in heavy cover. If you bump to 50 or 65lb braid, you'll want to bump up the leader strength too.

You can fish nearly anything with anything imo. I believe that specifying gear to a given lure just improves the action, presentation, or ease of use. This is overall, but of course there are times where it's severely needed (e.g, don't use an ultralight rod with a hollow frog)
