This film should help you understand the complexity behind fast starts.
Focusing on the relation between accelerator and clutch input, and the 4 possible outcomes you can expect.

I stalled in a very awkward place. I relax and sort myself out. I add gas slightly and raise my clutch gently as I can and add gas more

Been learning manual for about a month now with my car. I don't regularly stall anymore but it still happens from time to time. I find the more I think about what my feet should be doing the worse I drive and the more likely I am to stall. If I just relax and don't think to much, its smooth and quick take off every time. Did it today but luckily I was in front of an older gentleman in an audi who was understanding 😅

You should carefully release the clutch up to the biting point, and then hold it until the speed of the car matches the speed of the engine... usually until you get to about 5mph. Then you can fully release the pedal. Hope that helps

Thanks for the video man! So I didn’t have very much experience of driving a stick shift before, but I’ve been practicing all the time, particularly the set off part from standstill which I wanted to get faster on it and be more proficient! I got a question here, however, that confused me a while which I figured you might be able to shed me some light on it! I know that for moving off faster you can rev the engine to 1K-1.5K RPM before letting go of the clutch, but when I did that while keeping the clutch at the biting point, I could feel an obvious vibration presumably between my engine and transmission for a little while, then it moves off smoothly. I was wondering would that vibration do some harm to the clutch and wear it down faster than it should be? Am I doing it in the wrong way? If so, how should I fix it out and make it back on track? Thank you guys!

I having trouble with this right now. I’m in America too so ppl don’t understand how manual cars work. Was practicing this at like 4 in the morning and was at a stoplight about to take a left hand turn. The person behind me got impatient and went in front of me while I was going and almost cause an accident since they were also doing a left hand turn. I didn’t even take that long too, about 2 seconds longer than if I was in an automatic car.

I have the same issue in my car. Still learning. Hopefully we can nail it. Haven't stalled the car ever, but I do take off slowly and it sucks. I'm sort of afraid to Rev it high and wear the clutch too hard, and I think I use too little gas. I'll practice more today.

@@jaiddencrazyman12 the first week is the roughest and then you get comfortable and it’s second Nature. I got my first manual car a a little over a month ago and you just have to practice. Don’t try to rush the start from a stop, you’ll most likely stall. Take it slow and slowly attempt to start off faster and faster. Just forget that people are behind you at lights and keep the manuals alive. Good luck!
@D3athduo

@@jaiddencrazyman12 Yeah I've gotten a bit better recently. You gotta find the friction spot, bring your foot up off clutch quickly until you hit it, then slowly let the clutch out through it whikebstarting on the gas. So it's like a quick, then slow, thing. It's odd but if you do it for every shift or takeoff it's much smoother.

Driving instructors taught me to hold the clutch at biting point and be ready so I can move fast, and here it's a handbrake start ...but my friend said no that's going to wear the clutch and he advised ..to leave the handbrake off , put gear at neutral..and use the brake to stop at traffic light , then it's the clutch only to worry about when to start. But what I found the best is That people need to wait and be considered for those who still learning. I prefer to stop everything gear in neutral, handbrake on, feet off everything and relax my legs, then take my time to start ...I don't understand why people are in hurry always ..of course I end up panic n car stalls :-) but with time I got used of people shouting n looking at me in strange way...and I laugh

Off gas quickly, clutch, shift, before you release completely when it hits the bite point add gas and release the clutch . If you do it quickly the gas pedal is off and on quickly while the clutch pedal is a slight delay
@davidlp3019

2nd is hard to master. I've been driving manual almost 4 months now and I've basically got 2nd down pat. The key is you need to find the right rpm to shit at for 2nd and after you rev it up in first you need to be quick with clutch in 2nd clutch out little gas. It takes practice but it feels normal once you get it. Keep practicing and try shifting at different rpms, mine needs about 2500 in 2nd or it won't be smooth. I believe the owners manual tells you

The best thing is when u stop and put it back to 1st take ur clutch to the biting point before u need to so its ready to go, keep ur foot on the brake tho then when its time to move, ur clutch is ready to go so just apply some gas and let the clutch out
@deltaVmark
@deltaVmark 4 жыл бұрын
Blackbeard 007 that sounds like a good idea, but there is a problem with it. When the clutch is in the biting point, friction occurs between flywheel and clutch plate. That is normal. It causes the friction material to deteriorate. It’s normal wear and tear. But if you are going to sit on the light for tens of seconds, maybe even minutes at a time, you will need clutch replacement every few months rather than usual few years. That’s why I don’t recommend doing that.

You said - its impossible to stall if we need enough gas, but what if we release clutch too quickly with this action, do we stall or move with hiccups? Thanks
@deltaVmark

Well, it depends on your car, if it’s powerful enough you get well spin, if not then hiccups. But it’s not great for the car anyway, puts a lot of wear on many parts.

This is why starting on a steep hill can actually be easier in less power cars. You just floor it while smoothly engaging the clutch. Unless the torque is so low you can't move much of course. 🤣

i have a 1.9 TDI GOLF 5, 105BHP, FWD, how do I move off fast ? Rev to lets say 2500 and keep it there and release the clutch until the biting point and then keep it at the biting point for how long until I release ?
@deltaVmark
@deltaVmark 4 жыл бұрын
Once you get the bite, try to bring the clutch a little bit higher. And then even higher ... and so on. If you go too high you will either stall or get wheelspin. But that puts lot of stress into the whole drive train. (Not healthy for the car) Try to feel for the different response of the car to how high you bring the clutch to. And keep on practicing 🏎🌪

@deltaVmark

yahya 97 it’s just how human brain works. It takes time, and repetition to create and reinforce connections in your brain. Think of the time when you learned how to write. How long did it take you to write one word? And now? You can probably write 10 in the same time. So just practice. Try to increase the amount of move off’s you do when out practicing. Maybe by stopping on the side of the road more often. Or doing more give ways. On traffic lights try to predict your turn. Usually you can see the secondary light for crossing traffic, so when it goes to amber you can start to set the acc and find the bite.
