The motivation for this video came from the many times I get asked by my patients this question about Basmati Rice vs Brown Rice, which made me realised that many people do not realise that Basmati Rice can be White Rice, Red Rice, Brown Rice, whilst at the same time, Brown Rice can come from Basmati Rice, Jasmine Rice, other types of rice. If you have found this video, I am delighted that my effort in making this video has not gone to waste, but if I have failed to achieve the goal of clearing this up this confusion or worse, even added to the confusion, then my bad! I shall reflect on how I could have done this video better and improve myself for future videos. Ever since I posted this video a few months ago, it has received many comments from viewers, some positive and also many negative and even angry comments. I want to thank everyone who made the effort to leave comments, regardless of whether they were positive or negative. I shall take encouragement from the positive encouraging comments but at the same time, even though I may not have or be replying to all comments, I will also not ignore or disregard the negative comments/feedback but to take such negative feedback seriously and learn from them, then use them as motivation for me to try harder to improve and make better videos moving forward. THANK YOU ALL! Thanks all for dropping by my channel. Best Regards Doc

@Renee CA Hey Renee, it is a very common misconception! that was why I made this video, hoping to help people, who are trying to make better food choices, understand the different types of rice better. But looking at the many negative and even angry comments below, I might have made some people even more confused by my video! Sigh. I shall learn from this and endeavour to make better and clearer videos in the future. Thanks so much for dropping by my channel and making the effort to drop me a comment, thanks! really much appreciated, best regards, Doc

Interesting and nicely presented, not too long. I think we are now clear you can't make comparisons between different rice cultivars without specifying how the rice has been processed, but we're still not clear what rice to go for if you're T2, as I am. For the record, I tend to buy brown basmati. Is this a wise decision? I also hear parboiled white is a bit better than plain white rice too.

In India, traditionally the best rice is supposed to be parboiled brown Basmathi rice. And it has a GI of something like 30s which is excellent for any rice. Please doctor, if you can gather data on it, do a video after your investigation. Thanks.

Not going to explain as all of you lazy people need to start looking up info you self. parbroild rice is half way between white rice and brown rice, its still consider white rice. Its been half polished to take off the tough outer bran. Brown rice is better than any type of white rice

My first meal with Brasmathi rice was so inviting that i gained appetite instantly! It was so herbal enriched with the rice and when i am back to Malaysia i could not find any eateries that can match the flavours i had in Nepal! Simply splendid!

If you drink 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar in a glass of water before eating the rice, the GI will be "lowered" since the ACV will cause a slower releasing of the starches. Or so I've been told, and it feels like it works! (for me) And of course, if the meal contains (healthy) fat, the total GI for the meal will be lowered.

I want to know if the brown basmati rice I bought from India is significantly lower in arsenic than other brown rice. How does it compare in this respect with California grown brown basmati rice or with California grown brown rice? Ok. Clarification, I am not a diabetic, but have insulin issues. I normally do not eat rice due to the glycemic nature. So yesterday, I indulged. I keep a mix of brown, red, white, wild rice blend and quinoa I use one e in a while with lentils. I am unsure as the variety. I had a 1/2 cup of lentils with rice mixture and 1/2 cup of homemade fresh ground pork. This would make the rice mixture a 1/4 of the bulk of the food. My blood glucose did not seem to spike much. It was a normal low carb bump. I am going to test this some more, but if my body does not react to whole grain rice that bad, I may use it more. I will look to make sure the other rice varieties I buy are the whole grain basmati next time. I really have no idea what this was. I normally substitute cauliflower as my rice for most meals and keep very little rice on hand.

From what I understand, Southeast Asia rice need to grow in fields flooded with water; therefore, the rice absorbs the chemistry in that water. Unfortunately, nowadays, water in these areas is very polluted and studies show that this rice has higher level of arsenic than the rice grow on the mountain sides or inland like Basmati rice. What do the doctor think? Does this theory sound far fetched or have some merit?

Excellent teaching video, Dr. Chan, sir. I find that as an American, living in a suburban areà, my problem is twofold in nature: the first being, my ignorance of the differing varieties within both Basmati and Jasmine rice; and, secondly, lack of availability. Perhaps with the new knowledge I have gained, I will explore online ordering. Would love your opinion on black rice, too. Much respect and gratitude.

After this over 4 min talk the Dr should say this in half a minute. There are white basmati rice , brown basmati rice and Red basmati. The white comes from any of the other basmati rice but has removed shell which has less nutrient so should be said why the shell need to be removed, waste of time waiting on this important information over 4 min? and never was said.☹️

I have read that one may reduce arsenic content of rice buy cooking it in a large volume of water and pouring off the water when cooked rather than using a rice cooker. That makes sense. How about cooking the rice in a large volume of water, then pouring off the water before it is fully cooked, then finishing the cooking in a rice cooker to achieve the drier rice result? It seems to me that would be the better method.

I think you k you should have considered one more catagory that is Sella Basmati Rice! Its must preferred by many ... due to its processing technique. Within itself there can be more subcatagories.
