I use several "hacks" when setting up my home theater, and the "Crossover Hack" keeps the subs "well-fed" for better dynamics... Vv Click "SHOW MORE" vV
"The List", subwoofers that are dramatically deeper, with a much flatter response than typical subs: www.subwoofer101.com/best-subw...
Be sure to watch the SVS Outlet for the upcoming Memorial Day sale, and don't hesitate if you see something you like, they go very quickly!! I suspect you can get smoking deals on PB-13 Ultras if they have them in stock: sub101.link/SVSOutlet
Stop by my Amazon store for movies, AVR's, and other gear: www.amazon.com/shop/subwoofer101
This series is about short, easily digestible "hacks" that allow you to get more out of your current setup.
Here is the link to the Bite-sized Bass Hacks playlist: • Bite-sized Bass Hacks
A detailed explanation of Large vs Small, and how the crossovers on AVR's typically work:

How I dial in subs by ear: • Subwoofer Gain & How I...
So again, I put this hack out there with some caution, as many subwoofers, due to the response curve, will sound boomy if you run the crossover too high. Trust your ears above all else.
The ported subwoofers from SVS are extremely easy to integrate, allowing me to run the crossover as high as I want without major concern. Again, I would prioritize dual subs over a single larger subwoofer. I would split your budget to get matching duals.
Learning Room EQ Wizard (free software) is involved, with a good sized learning curve, but I think the juice is worth the squeeze. It's a good idea to use a properly calibrated microphone like the one I use, the MiniDSP UMIK-1: amzn.to/2hb6Nsz (affiliate link, which supports this channel)

I agree.. i have seen somewhere the THX standard is 80 I run mine 80 to 120. I tweaked it with my ears to a spot i reallt like. I am mostly music but always on the lookout for good 4k trailers and videos to test out my rig. That dolby atmos with the rain and thunder is my fav. A great test video for any rig.

For some reason, 90 hertz is where I like my minimum crossover. Just my preference. I like the Dolby Atmos demos too, especially the one with the rain. The bird flying around the room. Pretty good demo.

Having two subs right next to fronts allows high crossover frequencies without destroying stereo image (through impaired integration of subs and fronts). Still, It is generally a good idea having even one sub at about 60-90 Hz, regardless of how low fronts go. Still, I would strongly suggest against going above 90 Hz, no matter how small fronts are (for that reason I would suggest strongly against fronts that cannot reach at least 90 Hz).🤓

After watching this and messing with the settings, I came back to say thank you. I have been up and down with my settings. It helped me understand the settings in a way that I didn't before. I brought life to my system and all of a sudden I have a subwoofer! Of course it's always been there, but after using some of the adjustments/tweaks I can tell it's there now. So thank you for making this video!

Thank you for this video, i am still setting up my system and trying out different settings.So as i understand if i set my Front speaker to 100 hz it still gets the bass low frequency cause is a soft cut of not hard right? so the bass lfe will feed better..right + without stressing the AVR? i got my center channel to 100hz , front channel to 80hz, bookshelf to 120 , atmos(Top Middle) to 150hz and sub to 120hz (5.1.2) . I ll try to set the front to 100hz .. i am really curious about the diference. What 's your opinion? thanx again!

Thanks for the information on crossover hacks. I've been frustrated on this for several days now going on weeks trying to figure out why I cant get my sub to come alive.I have a 5.1 system. I have a Marantz AV7005 processor with a Sunfire True EQ Signiture subwoofer. My speakers are all Boston Acoustics VR40 fronts VR12 center and VR/MX surrounds. For some reason I cannot seem to fine tune my sub. My crossover is set to 80 hz on the speakers and the sub LPF for LFEis at 120. It seems like it is not active then on certain scenes it is too distorted. Something is not quite right. To do an auto set up with audyssey, how do I adjust the sub settings on the Marantz? Thanks for the Video.

I don’t know if it’s the Onkyo or if my crossover settings are crap. The set up is in my bedroom

I agree and concur 100%. I run a 2.1 setup w/ 5 1/2" 2-way monitors, rated for 60hz. W/full signal from the amplifier, the excursion is crazy, a bit boommy(kinda muddy). Threw on a capacitor, cutting the monitors at 80hz, brought the excursion way down, allowing the speakers to be more accurate with the rest of their frequency range. Cleared up any muddy-ness, allowing me to go louder, without worry of huge spikes from lower frequencies blowing the monitors. Accuracy, efficiency, safety, win, win, win, with separating the jobs of individual speaker's intentions.

Man. I enjoy your videos so much. Been rewatching all of them after getting my pb 1000 pros. Going to send them back and get the on 2000 pros (want a little bit more 🤤) however I’m having a slight problem and would like your input. If I set my crossover to 80 my subs hard cutoff at around 30hz as measured by REW. However if I set my mains to full they will extend down to 17 hz just not very loudly. Everything remains around 60 70 dB till around 30hz and then drops dramatically at 80 hz crossover and gradually but not super hard like crossing them over. However I don’t think it should drop 30-40 dB between 30hz and 17 correct? They should remain decently strong? Am I wrong. I watched your review video and if I’m not mistaken you said they should still have authority at least down to 20hz? Sorry for the long post. Any thoughts?

I'd like your opinion for where I should set my cross over points. My sub will drop down below 10Hz (at over 100Db) 6000 watts RMS. my mains (RF-7IIIs) will drop to somewhere around 30Hz. And my receiver (Marantz SR8015) will put 101 clean watts X 7 to my mains. Your thoughts?
@lawrence09151
@lawrence09151 3 жыл бұрын
Well also important is that if you use a lower xo for the mains then you’re only going to have a single source of bass, either L/R whichever speaker has the signal instead of 2 tuned subs giving you a consistent sound.

I'm in a 6 by 9 bedroom I just went through a long debate between the SVS 5.1 and everything else in the area and I actually ended up settling with the focal dome 5.1 part of my decision was that I'm going to be using the dn1080 Sony receiver which has lots of high effects and details from what I'm reading so I figured the domes would be able to make things a little more organic with all that extra input and avoid listening fatigue. so in a small 6 by 9 bedroom in an old house with no insulation in the walls the focal subwoofer will basically turn my small room into speaker in itself.it will be placed underneaththe head of my bed roughly in the middle of the room and satellite array. but I was thinking I have a 12 inch cerwin Vega so which goes down to 28 hzs and I was thinking of having that down in the corner base of room at a lower perhaps 50-60ish crossover with the volume up real high and and then having the dome sub at a higher perhaps 130ish crossover but with volume at moderate to medium. I'm thinking this will join my sub with the satellites perfectly within I will still be able to have emphasis separately but in a good grade for the lower low end. thinking this is a good hack. 🤔 I can't seem to find anybody who also does this crossover setup what do you think does this sound like a good idea? really appreciate the feedback!

Hi Ryan, So when you change the crossover in the avr you also change the low pass filter on the subwoofer.....yes
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 жыл бұрын
In the AVR, the filters are changed accordingly depending on the frequency selected. I don't typically mess with the crossover on the subwoofer itself, I typically disable it (Max frequency value). However, typical subwoofers may require the use of the crossover on the subwoofer itself to cut down on the boomy nature, and in that case yes, you would need to adjust accordingly. With the subs I like, there's pretty much no reason to engage the subwoofer's on board crossover, unless you have a 2 channel system without a crossover function.

PHASE QUESTION: I often hear people ask, "Should I have my subwoofer set at 0 Phase or 180 Phase." This is an important question and I understand the logic behind it. If it was simply a matter of a Phase switch on a subwoofer, the answer would be fine - there would be only two possible choices (0 or 180). However, it is not that simple. My A/V Receivers from Onkyo and Sony allow me to select 0 or 180. This means there are FOUR possible scenarios. Those scenarios are: AV Receiver = 0 and Subwoofer = 0 AV Receiver = 0 and Subwoofer = 180 AV Receiver = 180 and Subwoofer = 0 AV Receiver = 180 and Subwoofer = 180 I fully understand that if you have your subwoofer in the front of the room, you should have both the A/V Receiver set at 0 and the Subwoofer set at 0. However, my confusion and question relates to when the subwoofer is in the back of the room. I know by subwoofer should be at 180 Phase. ... However, does this mean BOTH the A/V Receiver and the Subwoofer should be set at 180? Or does this mean only ONE of them should be set at 180? In other words, I'm asking if you want the Subwoofer set at 180, does that mean the A/V Receiver also needs to be set at 180? If not, does this mean placing both the A/V Receiver at 180 and the Subwoofer at 180 will create a form of 360 Phase? If you could explain this, I would appreciate it.

I could give you a better idea of the right crossover if your subs had more of a flat response. You can play a frequency sweep, and you'll probably notice that they start getting quieter under 30-40 hertz. Here is a playlist of sweeps: kzfaq.info/sun/PLMZU06y9stN5z0pyKkaF-frNPcigSyHi1 Not trying to pick on your subs in particular, it's a very common problem, the vast majority of subwoofers get quieter as they go deeper, which is pretty much the reason I started the channel. Very few subs truly deliver strong bass at depth, and the difference is undeniable. The bass is strong down to your hearing limits. You can see the graph on this page that tells the tale: www.subwoofer101.com/best-subwoofers/ I tried using my normal recommended setting of 90 hertz for towers with "regular" subs, and it was too boomy and really frustrating to try to get it adjusted right. I set all towers to Small. As for the rears, I asked about your AVR in your other comment. Rears tend to be accents, and not always going, but it could be a number of things, including how and if room correction is run, and whether it's just with music or movies too.

Pleay help me. When I turn the crossover knob all the way up in my velodyne, it rattles during deep bass scenes. I set my crossover in Pioneer sc lx 501 to 80. Do I have to set the same number in subwoofer crossover knob? I was told by few to leave the knob all the way up as it could go and let the avr do the job. Few of them told it doesn't make any difference. Avr are incapable of filtering well. So set 80 or 100 in avr and the same number in subwoofer. What should I do.? Please help

I was crossing over too low, but now it is sounding waaay better with a higher crossover with my audio set up with bookshelves. Question. How do address the volume level? This is great advice. I have a 7.2.6 system, all SVS Prime (6 Bookshelf, 6 Elevation, Centre, two PB-2000s), and it sounds awful after Audyssey setup (through a Denon X8500 no less). Had to find this out for myself, eventually settling on 100hz crossover for all speakers and BOOM: beautifully balanced, full sound where previously far too much work being farmed out to the small drivers on the various speakers. Toying now with turning off Audyssey altogether to see how that sounds. Still getting some unwanted frequencies during movies, in dialogue and at other times, I can only describe as wince-inducing.

Thanks for the feedback! Try "Flat" instead of "Reference". Also, turn Dynamic Volume off. Dynamic EQ is great, but Dynamic Volume can be troublesome. Try 90 hertz for the Bookshelf and Center, and 120 hertz for the Elevations. The PB-2000's respond well to the "Gain Hack" as well, the first video in this series. Nice setup!!

Subwoofer 101 Hey, just wanted to say thank you! Only just installed the speakers at the weekend, but I knew something sounded off. Had fiddled with the crossovers and found improvement, but with your suggested settings, as well as setting Audyssey to ‘flat’, it now sounds like $10,000 bucks worth of sound. It is, now, to my ear, flawless. HUGE improvement over how Audyssey wanted to set things. From loud and somewhat scrappy, to composed and refined. Also, thanks for helping me choose the speakers. Your videos helped me choose SVS (I’m in the UK, so couldn’t use your affiliate links, sadly), and also to make the choice to get two PB-2000s instead of one PB-4000. Very happy with my choices. Sound is incredible.

@@danhowdle9508 I really appreciate you following up! Glad it sounds correct to you now. The reference setting is not for everyone. One thing that tends to happen is that you might have to set it to Flat for every input, and keep an eye on it. Every now and then I'll notice the sound is a little off, and sure enough, it's back on reference. Otherwise, it's an awesome AVR. Glad you went with dual PB-2000's, duals make a world of difference. Yes, it would be a BIG difference. I'd go with duals, and if you can't swing 2 PB-2000's, dual PB-1000's would easily be my choice. If you go factory direct, you can upgrade within a year. Just be forewarned, great bass is pretty addictive, and many viewers upgrade to PB-4000's and PB-16 Ultras. If you're inclined to support the channel, you can follow my affiliate link before ordering: sub101.link/SVSOutlet They are having their memorial day sale today, and their outlet items come with the same Bill Of Rights as new products. I run my LFE routed to mains and sub get signal at 200hz (and below). This will make sure bass from the small surrounds gets played through the sub and my towers. My towers are 100lb JBL L150's that are crossed over at 40hz (and above), then i have the crossover on my 10" sub set at 100hz (and below) because it sounds best from 60-120hz. Then i have my 15" velodyne set closer to 45hz because its actually nice and flat from the 30-50hz it loves the bass in the lower frequencies that you feel more than hear. if that makes sense. I can set this sub that low because its a servo controlled woofer that is quick and clean and doesnt get messy sounding (for most music anyways).

Would like to add something which I have experienced and this is only if you have large towers speakers and good deep base subwoofers. Everything he has said about crossover and speakers should be set to small is correct. The only thing is when it come to music or 2.2 stereo from your audio cd, or vinyl records then the the front set to 110 and lfe + main remains the same 120 gives the perfect stereo experience. For films in 5.1, 7,1 or 2 or Atmos you can keep the front speakers at 90 or even 100. Try this and see if it gives you results.

Doesn’t SVS’ MERLIN recommend setting the Ultra towers crossover at 50hz with an AVR?
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's kind of what makes it a hack, it's against conventional wisdom. The Ultra Towers do pretty good at 60 hertz crossover on my AVR, and I imagine stronger amplification would support a lower crossover. That's part of it too. The x6200 isn't exactly weak, but running a true 200-300 watts per channel would improve dynamics such that a higher crossover wouldn't be as necessary.

Irish Dad and Irish Son I’d say yes. Set your av to what you want it to be, my understanding is..using the dedicated LFE channel overrides any setting on the back of the sub. I’m using a BK sub (Essex UK based company) and it’s the case for me, all I tweak is gain and phase on the sub itself. (Just tested and yes, the LFE channel overrides my subs frequency dial.) If you’re unsure, max out your subs crossover and tweak it in av settings..

Hi bro ..hope u doing good:) I find all the information you provide in your video's related to subwoofers. Hi I was thinking to upgrade my subwoofer pioneer s51w with svs pb1000 as the s51w subwoofer driver is 8 inch which gets stressed and distorts at higher volumes. Wanted to ask about the performance of PB1000 that does it also distort at higher volumes and is it fine for my bedroom which is 20×20 . You being an expert can help me I'm sure . I am using 2 subwoofers at the same time connected to my avr which is pioneer vsx-523 using a y connector. The second sub is sony sa-wm500 which has a 12inch driver. So will pb 1000 fine for a 20×20 room and does it distort at louder volumes ? For how large room will the pb1000 perform well? I will wait for your reply Thankyou

The PB-1000's did great in my room, which is 24x24. PB-2000's would do better at filling your room easier, without pushing so hard, which is an effect of having more headroom. The more headroom you have, the less likely you are to encounter bad behavior. If you prioritize duals, you will have to push the PB-1000's pretty hard to get them to misbehave, which any sub will do at it's limits. I think you will be thrilled with the upgrade. www.subwoofer101.com/pb-1000-vs-pb-2000/

You need to make a Part 2 for this and cover the crossover in the “Bass” section in “Speakers/Manual Setup” of the Denon menu. And please explain the difference between this XO and the BASS XO, how they affect one another. And then there is the “2 channel playback” independent settings for listening to music, lol. Incidentally, and it PISSES ME OFF, these Denon AVRs (x7200) sound like crap when using headphones!!! There is no tone adjustment, there is no virtual surround sound. Spend 3 grand (or $4000 for the new one) and they can’t have headphone adjustments??? You better have some really good headphones!!! Glad you like the channel! Both subs are quality, but I haven't heard the Monolith 12 yet. I've heard the 15, and it's a quality sub. I'm an affiliate (not sponsored) for both companies, but I will say that SVS customer service is pretty outstanding. The SVS app is also very handy, you can make some easy adjustments, adjustments that would normally take a DSP 2x4, the 20 plus hours it takes to learn the thing, including the pitfalls of integrating a mini DSP 2x4. It's far from simple. By comparison, you can make super quick, easy adjustments on the SVS app, without needing countless hours of familiarization. The Monolith 12 has an advantage when it comes to price, but their return policy is not nearly as good. Either way you go, you will get a quality deep bass subwoofer. That's undeniable. Some people may take issue with this next recommendation, but I would absolutely go dual as well. If that means buying two lower powered subwoofers to keep budget in line, it's absolutely worth doing. So if you were going to go with the PB-2000 Pro, I would strongly consider dual PB-1000 Pros instead. It will absolutely sound better, and some people will say that you don't need dual subwoofers in a small room, but I've done it in a motorhome. Even in small spaces, it absolutely matters. Also be sure to check out my bass hack series, particularly crossover, the gain hack, distance hack, and the speaker level hack since you're in a small room. Welcome to the channel!

Can someone tell me why small subs like the SVS PB-1000 can go below 20hz, but it seems that almost none of the giant 18" stage, PA, DJ type subwoofers can? Is it because of the sheer difference in volume? I mean is it just because it is hard for something that large to go as low when it's main goal is to be extremely loud?
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 4 жыл бұрын
It has to do with design goals. Given the same driver size and power, a sub can either go very loud but not very deep, or it can have a very deep presentation, but not have as high of a Max SPL. I strongly prefer the deeper presentation subwoofers. That is the only type of subwoofer that you will find on my list. The difference is night and day. To be sure, large diameter drivers can have a deep presentation too, but that has to be the design goal in regard to the box size, ports, tuning, etc...

@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 6 жыл бұрын
It's time. I'm sure you could optimize a bit more, but you would see a huge difference stepping up. I'm very familiar with SVS, as their original affiliate I've heard every speaker except the Prime Bookshelf. Not a dog in the bunch. 5 Prime Satellites and 2 PB-1000's are a great starting point. Cross the Satellites between 110 and 150 hertz, and you'd have a very different home theater experience! Of course you can substitute in a Prime Center, or do a Prime Bookshelf or Prime Tower package, but so long as you order factory direct you'd have a year to trade up. It's a good cure for upgrade-itis. Good bass is addictive, and a lot of viewers have taken advantage of the trade up. Dual PB-1000's may seem excessive, but I've run all Satellites with the insane Dual PB-16 Ultras with more success than you'd expect! Bigger speakers are better of course, but the Satellites are a great place to start on a budget. I'm in the camp that considers dual subwoofers vital for proper bass, it's physics. You would find it trans-formative, to put it lightly. Your bass starvation problems would evaporate. If you're down to support the channel, you can follow this link: sub101.link/Satellite A phenomenal setup is the Prime Tower package with dual PB-2000's, but I don't know what kind of budget you're working with.

The Distance Hack usually works. How are the subs arranged in your room, and are they equidistant? I would try to have them at least equidistant for 2 pairs, and run a splitter for the pairs that have the same distance to the main listening position. So if your front subs are 10 feet and the rear subs are 8 feet, put both fronts on one output, and the rears on the other. The distance is the biggest factor, otherwise they could be Daisy chained on one output and usually be fine. The Distance Hack is always worth trying, and best when you can verify with REW.

Honestly, I don't have an answer for you that I would feel good about. My focus is on deep bass subwoofers, and based on your question, there is nothing I could offer that would fit with my outlook and opinion on bass. All I can say is that when you are able, upgrade to an AVR with "Audyssey XT32", not just XT, and get dual identical subwoofers from my list of subwoofers. That might not be in the cards now, but whenever it is, it's definitely worth it.

I run things very different from what you do to be honest. I have an SVS PB 12 plus in an apartment living room of about 30 square meters, and Focal 826W special edition towers and I use the sub crossover @40Hz on my Marantz AVR ( my Focal towers are powered with a dedicated Marantz amplifier though ). I've tried for months to get tight well defined sub bass when playing dubstep and rap music using a 80Hz crossover and my sub just did add too much bass above 40 Hz. My towers do produce some nice tight bass already. 80 Hz crossover did make the whole setup sound dull. Using 40hz crossover made deep bass very detailed, and bass above 40hz was handled by my towers only. I will buy a measurement microphone, just to see if my ears got it right, but in my humble opinion subwoofers should play sub bass, no sounds between 50 - 120 Hz. A decent tower can do that a lot better with more control. Also, what really helped me in my room was to get the SVS sub out of the corner. It's now in the middle of my shortest wall, and did also really help in having a well defined sub bass that's no more "boomy". Sub bass sound is such a complex and personal thing. I wish SVS came out with a self measurement system, like for example B&O did with their Beolab 5. Just put it where you want it in your room, it'll self-correct automatically.
@Subwoofer101
@Subwoofer101 5 жыл бұрын
The biggest thing you could do is get another PB-12 Plus from the Outlet. Even if you end up keeping your crossover lower, the bass would be cleaner, better defined, stronger and tighter. Running a single, you are getting Swiss Cheese Bass, with little holes missing, which is more pronounced in the upper frequencies where your towers are strong, and they are giving the "dual sub" effect. Room correction is super valuable, but it can't fix the problem like dual subs do. Having separated, matched subs interlaces the signal and evens out the standing wave effect. It's a physical phenomenon that signal processing can't resolve.

The crossover on the sub is just a filter. It filters off signal above the set value, so if you set it to 80 hertz, everything higher than that gets filtered out. If you decide to run your speakers to 120 hertz, you will have a hole between 120 and 80 hertz. Setting it to the maximum value essentially disables the filter on the subwoofer, so that you can make those decisions on the AVR without any hiccups.

Most subs have a shallow response, getting quieter as it goes deeper. Pretty common problem, and the reason I started the channel. You might have the sub gain turned up too high, but dual flat response subs would give you clear, full range bass. A single sub will pretty much never sound totally "right". 95% of subs won't go deep enough. www.subwoofer101.com/best-subwoofers/ In your particular case, lowering the crossover in your AVR might also help, but it will reduce the range of your subwoofer. Which AVR, and speakers are you running, and what are the crossovers for the speakers set to in the amplifier/AVR?

Do you mean in the Bass menu? In my Denon, in the Speakers/manual/Bass menu, the recommended is 120 hertz. I might be mistaken, but I believe that is just the limit on LFE specifically, so only on movie tracks. If you set it lower than 120 hertz, you're probably losing bass during movies.

Subwoofer 101 but i gonna leave Onkyo, the accueq is bad . I run auto callibration . He put the sub on + 4db . So i think i put the volume on the sub on - 6db . So we can hit 0.0 db level in the avr . Nope . Then he callibrate the sub @ +5.5 db . I am crazy or what ??

So LFE 80 hz for sub and speakers arround 90 / 100 hz 🤔 correct??

In the Bass Menu LPF, at least 120 hertz, otherwise you might be limiting movie soundtracks. For the speakers in the AVR menu, I like to have them at least 80-90 hertz, higher if they are smaller or not very dynamic at lower frequencies. I always set to small, even for very large speakers. More on that here: www.subwoofer101.com/setting-up-your-gear/large-vs-small-lfe-main-double-bass-etc/ I usually disable the crossover on the subwoofer itself, setting it to the highest value.

Just subscribed, loving the content! I have to run all my channels on large because my ol lady despises the subs so it connnnnnstantly turned down or off so I need as much bass from my speakers which fourtunatly do well, I've even thought the sub was on just set on lower level but didn't quite seem right and it was off but I run the subs way up I LOVE bass I thought my BIC PL200 was the cats pajamas which for $300 it is a little beast and on a budget I recommend I do enjoy it, but now I want more! but imo bass subs to some are litterly like drug addiction and I see you are strung out! Lol. I hooked a small 10" sealed Cerwin Vega for giggles I have a .2 and a spare 100w plate and it helps fill a void? But I just want 2 matching subs even if it's just another PL 200 I just can't get a new gen 1 (single rear port) to match aesthetically or audibly only ( slightly larger box dual front ported) gen2

80hz is NOT a good frequency for movies. ... Music frequencies will end up being heard through your subwoofer at 80hz - even in movies marked as "THX." ... I carefully experimented on dozens of movies and learned 50hz is the best setting if you use the concept of selecting "Small" speakers and using a Crossover. Denon seems to agree with me, because their A/V Receivers have a button where THX settings focused on 80hz switch to 50hz automatically with just one button. It is actually best to use "Large" for all five speakers, IF you have speakers that can go down to a low enough setting such as 50hz or lower. That way, all the LFE of the subwoofer can be turned up very loud - which I believe should be focused only on explosions and loud noises.

The portion of this video that states that a subwoofer crossover is a hard stop and a subwoofer is silent above that, should be corrected. That is not accurate at all

I have a base model Sundown Audio E15” v.3 D2 car audio subwoofer that comfortably rated at 500w rms. It’s being fed from a new model Pioneer D class monoblock that is rated 800w rms at 1ohm. I’ve had it dyno’d a number of times with the average being just under 810w off 14.35v power bank. Anyway, I purchased the speaker for a steal at $99 due to a finish flaw. They will easily play down to 25hz. I said all that to get to this point, I’ve been around a lot of people who attempted to talk a good game about something they obviously knew very little about. I’m not some huge audiophile. I’m just a guy who loves good sounding car audio that’s also capable of bass so deep and hard hitting that it’ll make you shit your combat trousers. I’m also a guy who can almost without a doubt tell if someone’s bullshitting. You sir Sade so many things that would qualify as absolutely vague bullshit answers that don’t actually give a true or proper answer to the question or problem posed.

You should never change the distance. This is phase alignment. I understand you have views but this is a lot of misinformation

Never? Misinformation? Challenge accepted! Pretty certain and inflexible of you. Sounds like you're a "never, ever, EVER color outside of the lines" kind of person, am I right? 🙃 Seriously though, both phase and distance are a function of time alignment. The problem is, phase adjustment only goes in one direction, delay. The issue is when your speakers are in phase, or perfect time alignment, AKA perfect distance, you get measurable cancelations in the bass. "Destructive" interference, rather than the positive "constructive" interference that makes matched dual subwoofers so awesome. Most likely due to differences in driver size between mains and subs. Perfect timing or "distance" is ideal for everything except for the subwoofers. Adjusting the phase to 180 helps, but not ideally, because it essentially is a delay. The problem with that is that bass decays slower than higher frequencies, so with 180 phase, your bass is never able to be in perfect timing during it's initial production or during delay. By adding 4 feet to the subwoofers' values after room correction, you are essentially adding delay to all of the other speakers, allowing the bass to populate the room slightly "ahead" of perfect timing, which allows bass decay to occur during perfect timing, rather than always happening after. The result? Much tighter, cohesive, and more complete bass. You might say it brings the soul back to the bass. And, it is measurable. You get fewer cancellations, as seen in the graphs in my "distance hack vs speaker level hack" video. You probably won't like that one either, because it means going against the dB measured for each speaker when you have a large variance in speaker distance values. If you have a speaker at 15 feet, and another one at 5 feet, the closer speaker will be too loud, and the furthest speaker will be drowned out if they are both measuring the same at the same dB. Doesn't seem like that should be correct, but there's a difference between the theoretical world and the practical world. You'll find me most comfortable in the practical world, and less constrained to conventional wisdom. I haven't provided misinformation, and believe it or not, the Distance Hack is one of my most popular adjustments, with viewers telling me how much it helped. Which makes sense, because again, the results are measurable, not just subjective. I can guarantee that if you go "by the book" in home audio, you will be getting suboptimal performance. No question. 🫳 🎤

Bullshit. Frequency responce of the sub can be flat in one room and it not gona be in another. It all depends on the room size and shape. Thats it!!!
