A recent study done on largemouth bass may have you thinking differently as to whether you should be adding scents to your lures!
One of the biggest questions that we have as anglers is “does scent actually help you to catch more bass?”
At times you see professional anglers meticulously putting scent on their lures as if they were cooking a meal for themselves and other times you see anglers say that scent just doesn't really make a big difference at all.
There are lure manufacturers that spend 100s of thousands of dollars creating scents that specifically attract bass, and you have guys at home melting down used soft plastics and putting them into homemade containers and they still catch bass.
So does scent matter to a bass? Will you actually catch more bass by using scent? Can a bass even smell?
In 2015, fisheries biologist at Carlton University in Ontario, Canada wanted to determine how Largemouth bass are able to locate their nest after being caught by anglers. The findings of this study may show us just how important the sense of smell is to a bass’ survival so let's dive into it and see what science says!
BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

I'm just restarting this hobby after my wife passed in August. She hated the smell of cooking fish, so I haven't actively fished in many decades. Things have changed so much. The gear I used to own as a child is now listed on E-bay as 'antique'. That's uncomfortable to find out. Your site has been compelling and completely insightful for getting back to the water's edge and giving this old hobby a new shot. Thank you for all the wonderful videos.

This sounds fine. I have used Berkley PowerBait Bass attractant for a couple of years. Fishing the same spot with the same lure. I have thrown out a soft bait without scent and not gotten hit. Then applied the scent and gotten hit on the first 1-3 casts. After a few cast later no hits, applied scent and the fish hit again. Another possibility could be that bass are only driven by scent at different times. For it to be scientific, the tests would have to replicated with the same results at different times, lake temps and conditions, in different places, etc. . . One or two studies can't be conclusive.

I can tell you without a doubt that bass and catfish will try to eat soft plastics infused with earthworm extract. I’ve been making my baits with it for years now, and they literally try to swallow the bait. I took a taxidermist buddy of mine fishing a couple years ago, and I would lose a worm on the strike occasionally. My buddy would pitch to the spot and catch the bass in most cases. Nearly every time, he would pull my worm out of the fish’s throat and give it back to me. Lol Dead sticking has also been extremely effective for bass and catfish. I don’t think that the infused scent attracts them necessarily, but I know they sure can taste it once they do bite. A study conducted by Berkley University showed that bass prefer the taste of earthworm over any other flavor that they tried. It literally ranked off the chart. It’s all in the book “Knowing Bass: The Scientific Approach to Catching More Fish” by Keith Jones.

scents can definitely make a difference but some might as well be snake oil. For me they can make the biggest difference when they keep spitting a jig before I can set the hook. After applying scent, they hold onto it long enough to get a good hookset. At the very least, they can also mask human scents and the plastics of artificial baits.

With the fact that bass behavior is controlled also by a 'conditioned response' to a positive or negative experience, it would be interesting to find a study on how effective scents are after a negative experience. Will a scent be as effective at catching a bass the second time around? If not, how long does a bass retain that negative experience. With the amount of use that Max Scent and other scents are getting, do they go from being a positive to a negative after a bass is caught?

Butcher Block mineral oil has tiny oil molecules that are so small that they soak into plastic worms and if scented (salt , garlic , shrimp , crawfish , etc ) it will soak in with the oil . I have used a butcher block oil based scent flavored with the above scents that lasts for years in the worms . So effective it is that I have reeled bass to the boat and watched them open their mouth and let go of the worm . They were never hooked and only let go at the last second . I also catch at least a drum , catfish , and carp every time I go . I believe scents applied in the right way where they don't just wash off works great for me . I find it doesn't make much difference on hardbaits however as I have found that sharp hooks work better than scents do .

I had an old chewed up worm fishing on shore when i was little maybe 30 years ago. There was a school of 6-8" smallmouths there. When i put a drop of dr juice soft craw scent on 10 of them would show up but when the scent wears off, only 2 or 3 would. So i use scent when the bite is tough, but not when they are crushing a spinnerbait.

Learned this when I got my first and only pack(s) of yamamoto senkos. Everyone said they were the OG senko, so I bought some. Went down a bank I know well in a lake I fish reg, one bluegill nibble. I was smh. Should have been bass in there. Went out to the middle, back to where I started, back to my powerbaits, back down the bank. 5 fish. All legal, one about 3#. It's not a long bank, takes me maybe half an hour to work down it, but I know it very well, so make pretty good time. That was the last time I bought something without Berkely in it. You make good videos bud, keep it up. Love me sum actual data from real thinkin people instead of just, works good for me bro, you'll catch so many fish on this

Appreciate the video. Really interesting. I was expecting the results to be contradictory to my experience, but I was wrong. I often fish the same spots at the same time of day, particularly when I have only 2-4 hours to fish. Last week I started collecting some data of my own. I generally re scent my plastics once every 10 casts or so, but the first cast after applying scent is when I catch 75% of my smallmouth Bass. Now I gotta go read the ingredients of my scent and see if it's oil based or not, but will probably be re-scenting every 5 casts or so moving forwarrd.
