Thundercat is one of the most shredding bass players alive today - what am I getting myself into?
“Funny Thing” is the most popular track from Thundercat’s 2020 album “It Is What It Is,” featuring his beastly signature 6-string bass sound.
Watch the video to see if I was able to fake it okay on 4-string, and how my bass line compared to the original. (hopefully not terrible)

I love that pro bassist Josh is playing a Squier for this vid. It's taken me such a long time to realize that price does not equal quality/playability/sound/etc. Since the late 90's, overall instrument quality has improved so much that you can find some really amazing "beginner-to-intermediate" level instruments and still some clunker "pro" instruments. The variability in styles, human physiques, and desired tones so often bridges the gap in areas that affordable instruments are seen as deficient. In fact, just yesterday I picked up a bass I put together from parts back in high school, and was blown away by how much something that has basically zero resale value still rocked so hard. \,,/, TL;DR: Don't impulsively buy that shiny new piece of gear on the internet; wait until you've tried it out with your own hands/ears and compared it to something you already like/own to decide.
@MrEliakimRAS
@MrEliakimRAS Жыл бұрын
That is all true, but (to me) it felt he was struggling to make smooth hand transitions between the low and the high notes (and note: he has great technique and large experience). In this regard, a 6-string bass would be better for if you want to make chops like Thundercat's but not hurt your fretting hand in the long run. (There are some companies that make solid 6-string basses in the same price range as this video's.)

Actually a pretty good execution, considering the performance stress of the challenge. Personally, the coolest baselines I write always come to me when I'm in the zone, alone, with zero pressure or distraction,and when I don't give a rats ar$ about making mistakes. I just play whatever the hail I want or feel. That's step one for me. Step 2 is I just keep doing this until I fall into THE groove the song tells me it wants,usually by mistake. But I know it when I hear and feel it. Finally, step 3 after I've got the groove dialed, I do Note arrangement and cleanup. figure out which notes don't belong and which do.
