THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME!!! This challenge is something that everyone should do every once in a while. Pick up something you've never heard before and removing the instrument you play. It also showcases the importance of having a large vocabulary and appreciating all genres of music. I love what you all are doing! Thanks again for having me!

Man, I have been listening to this song since I was 14, and have been playing it since about 18 or 19 on bass. I have a Steve Harris signature p-bass. I WAS WEARING A TROOPER T-SHIRT WHEN THIS VIDEO WAS POSTED. It can be a challenge for me to play, and you just nailed and improvised on it with one listen. Sir, I am in awe. Please, do yourself a favor and check our Rime of the Ancient Mariner. That is a fun song to play and has so many different parts, including the bass playing lead.

There should be a Drumeo x SBL crossover where the drummer and bass player listen to the same song they’ve never heard before without the tracks of their respective instruments. And then let them both do takes together on the new parts they came up with. I want more of these “hears for the first time” videos 😁

@@c.a.t.732 this genre doesnt exist without blues. and blues is a spinoff from gospel(and negro spirituals). the artists themselves may have taken from parts of classical(doubt it) when creating the song, but every single riff comes from blues. and its because of this foundation of blues/gospel, this bass player can jump right in seemlessly. because rock its many iterations, is just blues.

@@FromTheHipp Blues and gospel are not the same thing, so your whole argument is spurious. The gospel bass player here and his music do not represent the foundation of metal. If I practiced every waking moment until I die, he’s still getting better during that same time, I’ll never catch up. I relate so much to what he said about retention and how people know and rely on him for that; That's also been one of my greatest strengths as a musician. I've always been learning songs by memory, never relied on sheet as a pianist that much, and I carried on the same mindset learning guitar and bass later on.

The legendary Steve Harris is a very skilled bassist but this guy is on another level.First time hearing an Iron Maiden classic and to come up with he's own version and pretty well nail the changes.Not as forcefull as Mr.Harris but if it really is a first run through,well it's a really impressive take on this tune.

The thing I love about these videos is that every single time you can see just how responsive and in tune the musician is with what they're doing. It's so obvious they have so much *feeling* and response to it. It's such an oddly life-affirming thing to see

I know dude is a legend in his own right, but I'm mad dude nailed the gallop. Without even knowing who Steve Harris is 😅. Took me forever to be able to do that without my fingers getting exhausted. His version sounded pretty dope as well.

Well he actually missed the gallop and didn’t even seem to notice it during the session. Picked with two fingers even after hearing the original.

@hauxon
@hauxon 3 ай бұрын
@@oliverjr73 You're right but he still didn't get it right. I however always assumed Steve uses three fingers since it seems easier. Just like one might assume James Jamerson uses more than one finger ...but also wrong. It was a fair effort from Justin Raines and nicely played but the 5 string muted/muffled sound is simply the opposite of Steve's raw and harsh sound.
@oliverjr73
@oliverjr73 3 ай бұрын
@@hauxon Valid, but they're both very different instruments. Steve plays a 4 string p-bass, with a super chunky neck, and uses flatwound strings. You just can't replicate that tone with the bass he was using. The point that I was making, is that he knew the song needed a galloping bassline, despite having never heard the Iron Maiden song. Dude did beyond an exceptional job, and it really shows his mastery of musicianship, not just bass playing.
@theguitarexplorium
@theguitarexplorium 3 ай бұрын
@@oliverjr73 that's not right. He didn't gallop. He played straight eighths. So he didn't know the song needed a gallop bassline otherwise he would have played one! Not saying he did a bad job, just disappointed that no one in the video pointed out the fact that Steve plays a gallop and he didn't - seems like a rookie oversight on behalf of the hosts.

How about if Steve Harris hears “Teen Town” for the first time?
@SimonChingon
@SimonChingon 3 ай бұрын
Yeah but those guys are both iconic and created their own sound and style. Doesn’t make sense to have him try to play teen town. Maybe he’s already heard it too but leaves it at that and vice versa. One thing Justin completely overlooked was the feel of the song and he never quite noticed the gallop, which to me is the most obvious thing that drives the song. Just comes to show that no matter how knowledgeable or technical you are there is always something you don’t know or feel. I’ve heard jazz players try to play AC/DC and nothing in their vocabulary could save them!

I agree, but to counter your argument; he just had one take, no time to digest or rephrase, just a blind take. On the other hand they are teo different musicians with two different background and musical idiom. The song is written (if I don't misremember) by Steve Harris, of course he has the feel of it. The song is built around the bass riff(drive). PS: read all my sentences with a calm lecturer's voice😂

This mans bassline worked sooo fantastically in every single section and all the improvisations to each groove he had was amazing... and even more interesting that steve harris... not that its better but kept me on my seat throughout the whole song. So much melody in his playing. Loved every second!
