That brief clip at the end when Norman is hugging his mother and is 6 years old again was really sad. Broken kid since he was a baby.

I've enjoyed Bates Motel from the very beginning but the fourth and fifth seasons is where it really hit its stride and made for compelling viewing. The finale was, in my mind, everything it should have been and the superb acting of both Freddie Highmore and Max Thieriot really made for an emotional conclusion. If there was any justice in the world it would be brilliant to see Vera Farmiga, Freddie Highmore, Max Thieriot and Nestor Carbonell get recognition and awards for the job they did on Bates Motel.

I thought the Romero death was very disappointing... It doesnt make sense to me how Norman can sneak up to him and catch him off-guard, yes i realise that he was crying over Norma's corpse and just didnt have his guard up. i just think it was strange and not satisfying for Alex's Arc.

Feariie I know me too! So I just started the series a couple of months ago and finished it today (wow what a show!). I wondered the same thing about Dylan. You bring up a good point about Dr. Edwards as well. I think it would have been cool to bring back Cody in season 5 somewhere to intervene somewhere to help Norman since I was bummed that he killed his other love interest, Bradley. Anyway, the only other show I've completely watched is Breaking Bad and I've gotta say that Bates Motel was pretty darn good in comparison even though they are both very different and great shows.

I'm gonna miss this show so much! I was skeptical too and didn't really get into it until season 2 tbh, but once I did I fell in love. Freddie Highmore deserves all the awards because his performance was AMAZING - it just got stronger and stronger over time. I give the last episode a 9/10. And yes Norman definitely pushed Dylan to kill him on purpose, it was suicide by brother - he even stabbed the door/wall by Dylan instead of aiming right for him.

yeah..season 1 was a mess. It has some fantastic moments (Dylan and Norman scenes were standouts to me, Emma) and..everything else...not so much. Apart from the drug storyline, season 2 was such a massive improvement in quality. Yeah I even doubt Norman would have even stabbed Dylan even if Dylan didn't shoot him, but he knew Dylan wasn't going to take that risk because he has a family. If it wasn't for that, I don't think he would have minded dying with Norman.

So then this isn't even a prequel to Psycho like it was originally pitched as, but more of a spin-off/alternate universe storyline. it was a pretty good show, but I honestly don't know how I feel about how it ended. Definitely unexpected, I'll say that.

+The Playerstation 🌾 I agree that seasons 1 thru 4 were prequel-esque (despite one glaring difference... Norman's father doing the initial abuse seemed to be the reason for the split personality, not Norma). But I'd say, season 5 was radically different than PSYCHO, so perhaps it's most accurate to say it was an alternate PSYCHO. The Mother-construct's motivation and eventually Norman's own understanding of what was going on made season 5 of BATES MOTEL something all its own (and very compelling)! Familiar characters in a similar-but-different tale (with a decidedly different ending... since Norman survives and goes to prison in the original movie).

psycho was written by robert bloch - at a time when very little was known about dissociative identity disorder. in his book the character of norman bates is shattered into 3 distinct personalities: Norma ~ Norman ~ and Normal. the book is alternately terrifying, heart-breaking, and brilliant (as was the series, imo) - having aged particularly well some half a century later. enjoyed this review. cheers.

Yes Ed Gein was the original "Psycho" who lost his own mother Augusta (due to a stroke) and he become a killer of two women who reminded him of his mother. he confessed to the murders and spent the rest of his virgin life in a mental hospital. All he wanted was to be reunited with his mother in death. when he finally did die in 1984 I think he got his wish.

I guess Norman's death made a lot of sense when you add up everything that was different in the series than it was in the movie, especially considering that this was set in present day and psycho is 1960s, so maybe it's more of a "reincarnation" thing

Somehow I never believe that Norman was trying to kill Dylan. I think he pretended just so Dylan would end his life. The knife was never aimed at Dylan’s chest as we can see it ended up at the door. Good show. I have to say the first three seasons seem dragging a little too long and many arc seem forced for the sake of creating dramas. However, fourth and fifth seasons are hands down phenomenal! Better rhythm, each character has more well rounded and deeper psychological arc. I think this show is like a wonderful soufflé. All the ingredients came together so nicely: scripts, directing, acting and production. Too bad it wasn’t on a bigger broadcast when it was aired but Netflix and the internet have become a bigger and more important platform ever than before. So I hope one day this show will get the attention and praise that it deserves. Best of luck to everyone who had worked on this show for in their next journey!

I really thought it would somehow Segway into psycho and be a prequel to what a mondern day psycho movie could be. Overall I think this show is great with a few minor things that felt a little stretched out perhaps. The last 2 seasons I found myself just wanting Norman to be given the care he needs by proper doctors, but alas, we got but a taste of that. But the final season was great and kept me at the edge of my seat, I certainly found the scene with Norman and Dylan satisfying. And the fact that he and Emma live relatively happy is a nice touch to the dark and dreadful story.
@georgeclinton4524

lol I was still unsure as to what exactly would happen even to the very end. I legit thought maybe after everything that happened Dylan's mind would snap and he would start calling himself 'Norman' after hiding his mothers body and calling the police to let them know about killing Norman in self-defense. Then he would tell his wife to fuck-off and just run the motel and live in the house alone as 'Norman'. I think Max Theriot could have done a pretty good job at acting that out.

@@dleftfeel1990 Yeah, maybe. That's a cool opinion. And true, he has been experiencing Norman's violent side since the first season. The gun also could've been in case he needed it to stop Alex from killing Norman too. But, seriously though? Dylan knew he was going to have to kill Norman. He wasn't just going over there to call the Sheriff and stall Norman. They probably would've killed him anyway. Also, if he didn't want to kill him, why didn't he just shoot him in the arm, or the leg? Dylan knew exactly what he was going to have to do. Which is why he was gearing up, and called his wife in case it did go wrong. I'm sure if he could've went the other way, he wouldn't have killed him. That's my opinion, at least. Since we didn't really get any answers.

I jus dont understand how the Mother personality just ends up leaving Norman, I get it that she said that now that he knows everything that there is nothing to protect him from so she can leave BUT.. the whole time you get the feeling the Mother personality would do anything to keep Norman alive and not getting help cause that would mean she would not be needed so she would not exist anymore, and she would do anything to stop that from happening. Like Norman was gonna kill himslef after real mother died and then she jus appeared to stop him, she wouldnt let him take the meds or go to therapy. She knew if those things happen then she wouldnt exist anymore. So to have her jus say goodbye out of nowhere doesnt add up to me at ALL. I would think she would keep fighting to live not matter what and Norman would have to be the one to send her away cause she is jus to crazy but he didnt and she left all bye herself.

This was one of the best series ever on television. When you are bawling your eyes out because the murdering cop and the serial killer are dead, some one wrote an amazingly exceptional script. The acting was so good. The subtlety between Norma and Norman. That little hint that they are crossing a line or two. Just enough to gross you out a little. And all it took was one look from one of the actors. I feel so horrible for Norman. He was a nice kid. "Mother", on the other hand.. well Norman didn't deserve her or any of that.

From the 1st episode until the last , I was so emotional and sad , not only because of the events that took place in the last episode but sad as well that it was the last episode and there would be no more Bates Motel episodes to follow. Truly brilliant-a must watch if you haven't seen it yet.

I feel like this is the true story of Psycho. Like before Chick died he was able to finish the story from his point of view. He would have created his own ending (the ending of Psycho) and thats the story we see from the book and the movie. the book psycho is from the POV and information Chick knows not the info everybody knows. so Chick makes the story different than in reality. Thats why I think the show took on a different route.
@Xehanort10
@Xehanort10 6 жыл бұрын
There was a theory before Romero killed him that Chick was going to use the pen name Robert Bloch as a reference to the author of the original 1959 Psycho novel that Hitchcock's 1960 film was based on.

the show was so grisley and emotional yet terrifying and anxiety driven i couldnt bare to watch at time. but it was truly terrific and i’m so sad its over (but happy they didn’t try to stretch it out longer than it needed). i think norman wanted to die to be with his mother which is why he threatened dylan in order to be with her.

I thought it ended beautifully, but bringing Rihanna (Marion Crane) in for two whole episodes only for her to NOT get killed felt pointless to me.
@stressmuffin

IKR! This is a prequel to the original movie. It doesn't make sense to have Marion live, but Norman die in the hands of his brother. This show can't rewrite the original Psycho storyline!

stressmuffin the show wanted to confuse the viewers and change the storyline abit so it would be a different experience rather than having to be like oh it’s comming

Imagine getting in to this all these years later. I stumbled across it looking for movies to download and downloaded the first episode and was hooked. I knew it ended with season 5 and was so disappointed at the end of season 4. I was glad she was 'back' in season 5, a truly talented acress. I have just finished the last season and was somewhat dismayed with how it ended. I figured they'd try to tie it to the movie so that the movie would pick up where the series left off. The writing was so good that I think they could have made the segway to the movie work and it would have been so much less disjointed.

The explination you siggestion that norman provokes the gunshot on purpose makes perfect sense. If nornam had that realisation and wanted to end things he couldnt so it himself otherwise norma would come back and take over protecting him. Loved this show even tho im super super later to the party 😂

It wasn't a prequel. It was a homage. If Norman lived, and somehow was able to still use his name, then it would be a prequel. Seeing how Norman died at the end of the show makes any movie with him as Norman Bates a stand alone film. You can't call it a prequel if he's a business man in his late 30's in the movies and dies mid 20's in the show. Duh!

*My friend reminds me of Norman and the only thing keeping her going is her family. I love her so much but like Emma, I am moving to a different state and I hope I find love too. I can only be her friend from afar because if her son and father die, I know she will snap like this.*

Just finished this show. I’m glad they went into another direction than what everyone thought was gunna happen. Once they flipped the script that changed everything. It meant Norman was not safe like everyone thought. I figured Romero wouldn’t get his revenge and once the brother stayed it would come down to whether the brother decided to kill him or call the cops and he gets the mental help. Norman wanted to die. He didn’t want to face the reality. Felt so bad for Dylan when he told Norman how he wished things could be. Great show!

i was REALLY curious to know what happened to his doctor, i wish they had some closure for us on how he disappeared (possible died) like i know ok norman probably killed him, but i loved that doctor D:
@Xehanort10

His Mother personality probably took control and killed Dr Edwards because Edwards was trying to treat Norman which would have destroyed Mother so she killed him to stop that happening. In the therapy session in Season 4 after Mother tells Dr Edwards about Norma being raped by Sam and Norman being forced to listen to it while hiding under the bed Mother says "Please Doctor if you have a heart don't make him remember these things. Or I will have to do something about it."
@Emptyfetus
@Emptyfetus 6 жыл бұрын
The mother personalty even said to the doctor "don't make he remember these things or i will have to do something about it "meaning most definitely murder and the thing she was talking about was Norman's abuse as a kid
