Stam Fine reviews Tim Burton's film Batman, which became the biggest movie of 1989 and kickstarted a 4 movie Batman universe, of sorts. Michael Keaton pulls double duty as millionaire Bruce Wayne, and his alter ego, Batman. Also starring Kim Basinger as Vicky Vale and Jack Nicholson as Joker. Batman is a film that was scared of the shadow cast by Batman 66 and yet ends up goofy in its own right.

The great thing about Keaton's Batman was his Bruce Wayne. Batman is easy to play as he's just a dude in a mask who kicks ass and talks in a gruff voice. Wayne, however, has to be suave, somewhat aloof and conflicted about his past trauma and duel persona. Keaton nailed it. Also, the design and look of Gotham City in the Keaton flicks was awesome.

Even when he first meets Vikki Vale at the party in his mansion and she asks him 'which one of these guys is Bruce Wayne?' he hesitates and answers 'I'm not sure.' as if he was half taken aback by her but genuinely conflicted about his own identity. Loved it.

Very thorough and considered analysis of this landmark movie. Loved Nicholson's Joker. A particular highlight for me is his impersonation/parody of Jack Palance.

I always think of Nicholson as overacting and then i watche the film and realise he's perfect, its the villains following him on later films who are overacting.

I agree about Fine's analysis, for sure. A highlight about the Burton flicks for me is that Gotham City actually looks like a gothic city as opposed to say...the Nolan films in which Gotham City simply looks like New York City or Chicago or most normal, large city along the north-east portion of the US. Hell, even Pittsburgh could pass for Gotham in the Nolan movies. The Gotham City in the Tim Burton films were almost as much a character in the movie as well as a location or scenery.

All I really remember from the Adam West era is an episode where he used some Shark Repellant spray. A school friend of mine mocked this moment in the show mercilessly, and from that point on I felt too ashamed to keep watching it.

The Bat-Shark repellent is from the 1960's Batman movie. He's suspended from the Bat-Copter by the equally imaginatively named Bat-Rope Ladder. When it loses altitude.over the sea. Batman is partially submerged and on being lifted back up out of the sea a (rubber) shark is looking to make his lower leg an appetizer. At this point he asks Robin for the aforementioned repellent. It's just one of a series of brilliantly enjoyable campy sequences in this movie. The personal highlight for me is Batman's attempt to dispose of a bomb on a pier. Utterly enjoyable nonsense.

I just love Keaton's Batman/Bruce Wayne. He doesn't need to fake a gravely voice or roid up to be muscular in order to be intimidating. You buy the guy is somewhat functional but at the same time has this compulsion to do what he does. There is something dark in his eyes. Just great imho.

I'm so glad I'm not the only person who thinks Burton's two movies are every bit as campy as others, just in a different way. I remember movie reviewers in 89 being all indignant about the 'dark' Batman, complaining about the lack of humour, no sign of Robin etc, but in hindsight both Burton films have camp goofy sensibilities very much in keeping with '60s Batman just a bit skewed into dark humour. And when we finally did get a big budget version of Adam West style Batman in 1997, wouldn't ya know it all the same movie reviewers complained that the dark gritty Batman was gone...

I thought princes soundtrack was pretty good, but as what it ended up being; more of an adjunct soundtrack. Having listened to th album; it's pretty solid as a batman themed album, but I suppose it's true that it might have been completely laughable if Elfman's more proper score weren't present as a true functional score.

Batdance is rubbish! Prince obviously thought it was going to be a big-budget version of the TV show (it's damn close), and made appropriate songs. Check out the way he "sings" Batmaaaaan in the song - just like the TV show. I think this was just stuff Prince had in his vault from some point, resurrected it to make Batman references, and gave it to Warner Bros. Cha-ching! "Cheers!" sez the Purple One.

I wasn't impressed with the script when I saw this in the cinema way back in 1989. I've since discovered that it was a troubled process creating the screenplay. The movie looks and sounds very atmospheric, but it has no narrative drive or proper focus and the lack of energy is very apparent.

Superman 3 & 4 are, if anything, even more campy than the '60s Batman series, IMO. This film would provide the title to possibly the best (regular-length) episode in all of Star Trek: "...in the pale moonlight?". As well, it inspired the launch of Batman: The Animated Series - which led to (IMHO) the best feature-length superhero film, "...Mask of the Phantasm". Sure, it is mildly campy, but is arguably a watershed film, one that is instrumental in the genesis of all of the aforementioned adaptive works.

I was not a Batman fan but I was of the opinion that Batman should be a comedy because I really liked the Adam West stuff. I did not like this film at all. They didn’t quite nail the dark comic book feel (Nolan would get it right) so it felt like goofy characters in fancy dress trying to be serious. I felt the same way about Superman too. Honestly, I guess I am just not a big superhero fan. In fact, if you took all superhero films and ranked them in reverse order of how superhero-y they are, then the top of that list would be my favorite superhero films. What I am saying is, I like Logan and not much else. If I like Adam West Batman then I should like the more comical superhero films right? Well Deadpool 1 was okay but they all mostly fail at being funny.

This movie suffers from a number of problems. First, it’s not interested in the title character. We never learn why Bruce Wayne wants to fight crime, why he chooses to operate outside the law, and why he dresses like a bat. Where does he get those wonderful toys? It’s a great question. Too bad the writers don’t care to answer it. The second problem is the casting. Even though he was primarily known for comedies, Keaton had done dramas like Clean and Sober and proven he could be a serious actor. But his slight build made it impossible to believe he could beat up criminals. He also has little chemistry with Kim Basinger. Jack Nicholson basically just plays himself with makeup. The movie isn’t terrible, but ultimately it feels like a triumph of style over substance. It’s impossible not to compare this movie to Richard Donner’s Superman, which set the standard for superhero movies. That movie took its time telling an origin story making viewers feel truly invested in the hero. This movie seems more intent on erasing your memory of the 60s TV show than on getting you to care about Batman himself.

This film got Batman so wrong. I tried like hell to like it - I saw it three times at the cinema, a couple on video, and even have it on DVD - but it's just...embarrassing. The worst character is Knox, who has the worst lines in the whole film ("And this guy must have been King of the Wicker People, hur-hur"), apart from the commissioner. Nicholson is probably just laughing about how much money he's making from this puerile rubbish, and Keaton seems to think somnambulism makes him a "deep" person. I could probably take up the entire internet about how much I despise this film. But then, I could also talk about how cool the second film, Batman Returns was. It's one of Burton's best.
