Stam Fine Reviews takes a look at, well, its not a particular favourite so you can probably guess where this video will go. Batman Forever is a 1995 film directed by Joel Schumacher starring Val Kilmer as Batman/Bruce Wayne, Jim Carrey as The Riddler, Tommy Lee Jones as Two Face, Nicole Kidman, Michael Gough. The film finally introduced Dick Grayson/Robin (Chris O'Donnell) to the franchise. We'll get through this reviews. We're all in this together. Apart from you, Frank. You're on your own with that pineapple shit.

Can't wait to see your review of BATMAN AND ROBIN, which makes BATMAN FOREVER look like the epitome of subtlety. The first time I saw this one, I was startled by the tonal contrast between this one and the Burton movies. When I watch it now, I wonder about to whom the supervillains contracted the construction of the giant blender, and if they had any issues about zoning, or if they had to put an air traffic warning light on top.

I saw that in the cinema lol I go through episodes, I liked it well enough when I was 10, then for a long time it was garbage, but I watched it again last year with a friend and it's all sorts of incredibly amazing, perfect drinking game material xD Take a shot every time Mr Freeze says a pun, take a shot every time Ivy kisses someone, take a shot every scene you notice Batnipples... it's a ridiculous, magnificent time if you can embrace its campness, it's hammed up to 11, it's just delightful lol (also Uma Thurman is stunning, almost distractingly hammed up but breathtaking and seems to be loving every second of it, which I enjoy seeing :)

@@Malvito The _next_ entry is the then-contemporary version of the 1960s (Adam West/Batman & Burt Ward/Robin) campfest (I know, your friend's viewpoint). If anything, "...Forever" is more serious than the 1989 iteration (none arguably could be darker tonally and thematically than Batman Returns of 1992 or The Dark Knight of 2008).

In "Edie: American Girl" about Edie Sedgwick, Joel Schumacher describes what it was like to go to the office of one of New York City's notorious "Doctor Feelgoods" close to around the same time of the live-action TV series. Maybe that's what inspired "Batman Forever"?

A big problem is that Two-Face doesn't fit with The Riddler. As a result, they made him into more of a Joker and ignored most of the best aspects of the character. He's the villain that Batman really wants to save because they used to be on the same side. The movie gave us none of that.

Was I just imagining it or was Batman Forever (1995) heavily influenced by the excellent Batman: The Animated Series ('92-'94)? I was a huge fan of both the Tim Burton films and the Animated Series and was about 11 or 12 when Batman Forever came out and I remember thinking/feeling that very strongly in the theater during that very first heist scene w/ the safe/helicopter...

@@thefonzkiss Really? Joel Schumacher's "vision" of Batman (however one may feel about it) seems fairly consistent across Batman Forever and Batman and Robin and there's a lot of stuff taken _directly_ from the animated series... In Batman Forever I only ever really noticed it in the aesthetic and some of the models (the extra standardized and cartoony nature of ...everything/stuff like "Sugar" and "Spice" being a kind of Harley Quinn character/the helicopter is just like the ones in the cartoon/etc...) but especially in Batman and Robin not only is Bane's model almost identical to the one from the Animated Series but the entire concept of Dr. Freeze having a wife and being motivated by his role in both their conditions is taken entirely from the cartoon. That never existed anywhere else/they did it first and in the film it's straight up treated as canon.

I was never completely satisfied with how Batman was handled in any of the Burton/Schumacher movies. Too many missing fundamentals. Amid all that dissatisfaction, there were aspects of Batman Forever I liked, largely due to the deep introspection, good martial arts sequences, and vehicle designs I personally liked. For all that I was hoping would be implemented into Batman movies, the first thing I did after seeing Batman Begins was sending Joel Schumacher a thank you letter for ultimately euthanizing that Batman franchise and giving rise to one that I could believe in.

As much derision as Joel Schumacher deserves for this debacle, you neglected to mention the hack responsible for scripting it: Akiva Goldsman, who rewrote the original screenplay by Lee and Janet Batchler to bring it into line with Schumaker's "lighter" approach. He also phoned in the script for Batman and Robin, copying the exact beats of this horrorshow. He followed that franchise-killer with the script for Lost in Space, another ill-advised adaptation of a '60s TV show. Inexplicably, Goldsman won an Academy Award for writing A Beautiful Mind, a development that should have led to an investigative reporter's exposé to determine what bizarre series of events led to such an unlikely outcome. (Chillingly, Goldsman is the creator and showrunner of the Star Trek: Discovery spin-off Strange New Worlds, a show I had been looking forward to until learning of this.)

The Lost in Space movie didnt bother mainly because Irwin Allen turned the original show into a cartoon. A Beauriful Mind? Overated. And he worked on Fringe which had its moments mostly due to John Noble. So yea Goldsman isnt the great est.

My opinion of Batman seems to be in the other direction: I want MORE silly, not more gritty. I'm so bored to fuck of gritty. Superheroes are ridiclous, Batman is just a delusionally rich furry with violent tendencies, you can't do that seriously, it's bleak. imho Batman MUST be silly. Dark Knight was good but that's because of Heath Ledger giving the Joker such a unique spin. As a rule.. yeah it's got to be colourful and silly and over the top and hammed to the nines, otherwise it's just some rich fuck with issues beating up people in a bad economic situation, the silly is all Batman has really in terms of entertainment value to me.

You missed the mark on this one, especially when it comes to the writing. It's hard to ignore the finished product but I've grown more appreciation for this film and blame the studio for cutting out most of the depth that was in the screenplay - if anything, this screenplay was both darker and more psychological than both of Burton's previous films.

"Cute but covered in s**t" I've never heard a more succinct description of Batman Forever. And then you talk about the pizza with different toppings and you outdo yourself. They're both amazing descriptions! But then I'm in the especially small crowd that prefers Batman & Robin. That's because this movie is *almost* OK, it has everything to work and should but someone claws defeat from victory and doesn't work. Batman & Robin is throughout terrible so you can watch it like The Room - it's so bad, for me it's good. What does this do right? - Bat Costume looks great... err except the nips - Chris O'Donnell would make a great Robin as Nightwing - Nicole Kidman would suit a Noir Gotham setup - The special FX are great - The soundtrack isn't Elfman but it's pretty good - Joel Schmumacher IS a good director and a humble man by all accounts - The whole arc of Batman trying to hold Robin back from killing Two-Face is great stuff The problem is everything else is wrong. The campy tone works against the Burton movies. MASSIVELY misjudged tone. The Batmobile is generic and pretty terrible. Two-Face and Riddler are massively miscast (Lee Jones can't be arsed to be here, should have been Billy Dee William's, and Carrey is too Ace Ventura here. I rate Carrey as an actor very highly but he's just not playing the Riddler and his mugging is distracting. Val Kilmer is monotone and bland. The bad stuff just blasts the good out the door. And yet Carrey being cast here, I'm convinced caused it's huge success.
