I remember one of our inspections that a kid had gained some weight and he was trying to suck it in.. The officer saw this obviously and didnt get upset but chuckled and said in a soft voice " son, Your uniform is squared away but your buttons are screaming and you look like your about to pass out from holding your breath.. so I want you do to 2 things for me.. First do alittle extra pt for a few weeks and eat alittle less junk. 2nd after that go see the tailor to make sure your uniform is correct. I want you to be able to breathe at the ball in a fee weeks ok" lol.. This was an inspection a few weeks prior to our Corps birthday ball. :-)

But in uniform there will be no grab assery and youll conduct yourself as professionals.. What two people do in their bedroom off duty is none of my concern.. When your in uniform its my concern.. Only those who served in the military know that you are not treated badly at all. You are treated in a such a way to make you the best you can be. It's because the DI's care about each and everyone there. I've never felt better, more secure, more respected or more part of something great. That's after sifting through all the dynamics of getting as close to perfection as you can.

That's how it should be BUT it's not, in reality. In my time on active duty I saw plenty of so called "leaders" that just made shit harder for the sake of making it harder and making their yearly performance report look better by saying they implemented some new bullshit strategy to accomplish the mission. You'll learn in time, boot.

I had my inspection on the parade deck and it was hot as HELL. It was wool uniform and we were out there seems like a lifetime. It was July and you could see the heat waves going across the parade deck. Trust me I will never forget Parris Island. Back in 1979, it was called boot camp but it is recruit training today. There was no timeout and my drill instructors had more games than Milton Bradley. You were either dark green or light green but all were Mariine green.

I went thru Parris Island back in '75...we had our final inspection on the parade deck...our Battalion Commander had been at Chosin Reservoir and he even scared the shit out of the D.I.'s...I could literally see fear in their eyes the couple times he was around...once on a very long forced march the DI's halted us and instructed us to take our boots off and tend to our feet (blisters/bleeding)...just as we were taking our boots off the Battalion C.O. came marching by a warp speed yelling "Let'em bleed..put your boots back on and continue to march...just let'm bleed"...our DI's looked shocked but quickly ordered us to mount up, and off we went....we also didn't have female drill instructors...that's just wrong.

@SZ...yeah I heard about that...the only similarity was both were 3rd Battalion and both jumped from the 3rd story (1st Phase)...the recruit that jumped in my platoon, as I said was a Fire Team leader and I thought one of the best recruits in the platoon...I was expecting the DI's to give him a shot a squad leader, but after a long run as we ran up the stairs for whatever reason he jumped when he got to the top....I'm sure it wasn't that rare of a thing back in the 70's, we had a few recruits crack and do some pretty odd stuff....later.

We did it in the Air Force. Our instructors were unavailable that day for some unknown reason. We had an instructor from another flight (platoon) take us. He was an older guy forced back into the instructor career field due to manning shortages. So, they come to inspect us but they inspect the instructor first, it’s usually just a formality. But he got gigged because one of his front shirt pockets was unbuttoned (class Bs). This made them pay attention. He got gigged for something else but I didn’t catch it, then they walked around and I heard “Sergeant, your back pocket is unbuttoned that’s another gig. Sergeant! Your button is missing from your back pocket. Where is your button sergeant”. In the slowest southern drawl I hear “Muh, muh wife musta bite it off”. Pretty hard to keep a straight face but I managed. We went back to our instructors and the asked us how it went. Seven gigs. They lose their shit. They ask who got them. Well, two of us and five on the TI. Two for the whole flight was really low, they were actually impressed. Unfortunately the five that the TI got put us one over the amount for Honor Flight so everything we did in basic was for nothing. Oh well, I think it’s a better story this way.

For the Navy here’s how it works. 2 hours before the inspection our RDC’s have to leave the ship (the building where all the divisions stay there’s abt 13 of em and i think abt 10-20 divisions per ship) and the recruits have to handle the compartment by themselves and prep the Dress uniform and prep all the paperwork anr clean the compartment without help from our RDC’s.

My first ship the mess deck CPO uttered those infamous last words at the Ships Capt. inspection, "Sir, the enlisted mess is ready for inspection." The Captain, looked at him wryly, cocked an eyebrow slightly, and said "oh, really?" After the first four gigs in less than a minute, the skipper turned to the CPO and said, "Call me back, when you're really ready for inspection." We had to bust some ass for that little faux-pas. The second time around, the CPO reported properly and stated , " Sir, the mess deck is Standing By for inspection, Sir." "Much better, Chief, much better." Looked around from where he was standing, said "Carry on." turned around, walked up the ladder and that was it. True story, AS-11 U.S.S. Fulton, long, long ago.

Ran into my drill instructor on Okinawa way out in the woods. It was kind of crazy to see him there. He said I am just looking around. Spoke about five minutes and left. Drill instructor placed the platoon next to an all-female platoon for about 30 minutes.

I remember my inspections during recruit training. I was inspected a grand total of one time. Not even inspected by a headliner. Here's how it all went. SDI: Completely passed over. Probably would've failed. Series Commander: Completely missed. I was at medical that day. Ramming your foot on a rack post does more damage than you think. Company Commander: Completely passed over. Probably would've passed. (Those darn shirt stays would keep undoing themselves though) Battalion Commander: Passed over until the last portion when the SDIs would come and inspect every one of us. Safe to say I passed, though I do need to study the purpose of the MAGTF again . . . and again . . . and again (you see where I'm going with this).

Way back when I was in the Army, when Cold Warriors and other dinosaurs proudly walked the Earth, I **vividly** remember my Battalion CO Inspection. The battalion SGM was a man that scared our Senior Drill Sergeant and our Senior Drill had never faced the platoon without gassing our asses in the gorilla pit. We expected the SGM to be the same thing times about 20. The Battalion CO himself was a distant figure, a face on a wall of the chain of command we had to memorize. The Drills kept us up till 3am for an 8am inspection making sure everything was just so. All of this was given a soundtrack of threats over what would happen to the whole platoon if even one man got so much as a ding on the inspection form. That in no way impeded them from waking us at the regulation 5am and dogging our asses out in PT, however. It wasn't the first time I ate my breakfast while asleep in Basic... We barely had enough time to shower, get the latrine shipshape, and crawl into our Class A greens [hey, I told you it was ancient history] before they called 'Attention'. As a reward for the whole platoon passing the Inspection, the Drills ordered us out of our Class A's and into BDU's [these were brand new at the time...] but didn't come around for about an hour. Most of us spent that time sitting on the floor leaning against the barracks wall asleep 😁. Except one guy. See, we hadn't turned our weapons into the armorer yet, so we left one guy on 'fire watch'...

Who’s smart enough to explain the psychology of why the military cares so much about the uniform? Honestly in my mind, it’s a way to instil to their subordinates that they must submit to their commanders. That’s why the battalion commanders inspection is such privy to them that passing it would allow them deeper into the process.
@blazedones

Attention to detail, in the marines yes youre supposed to follow orders, but only if they are lawful ones.. This is drilled into your head, so, there is some things that focus in teaching you to comply with orders but an inspection isn't one of them. As an adult, im far cleaner than when in the corps. And I value what I was taught since being clean is you know a good thing, lol.

Tun Tavern, November 10, 1775, the first man signs his contract to enlist in the Continental Marines and steps outside. The second does the same. lol...this is so the New Corps. When I went thru Parris Island in '75 the day before graduation (after Final inspection on the parade grounds) our DI's came in and told us our Battalion Commander wanted to speak to us and that we should form a school circle. Our Battalion Commander was a big mean grizzled looking man that even our DI's were scared of. I heard them whispering once that he had been at Chosin Reservoir and had been busted once for hitting another officer. He was a very intimidating man and the hardest Marine I ever met. We are all in a school circle and the B.C. walks in and starts talking to us and a recruit coughed (we had a bug sweep through our platoon, that thankfully I avoided, but a few recruits still had a cough), the B.C. stopped speaking and when the recruit was done coughing he started to speak again and another recruit coughed. The B.C. stopped again and then said "if one more of you mother fuckers cough while I am talking I will personally take you all outside and PT you to death myself"...with that we gave the offenders the death stare and thank God the MF'ers did not cough. As to our B.C. speech? It was short and sweet, he said "You are not real Marines, you are only basically trained Marines. You won't be real Marines until you sneak up behind the enemy, grab his face with one hand and slit his throat with the other and feel his warm red blood run down your arm". Parris Island, 3rd Battalion, H company, Platoon 329, the summer of '75.

I'm never going to lose the sense of irony at having a zero inspect me when I was out in the fleet. The most unsat-looking Marines in formation were always the officers. You'd think they would teach officers how to wear a uniform at Quantico. The only exception was mustangs. Of course they know how to wear a uniform, march, etc. If the Marines really wants to do it right, they would require every officer to finish a tour enlisted first. Never gonna happen, but it would be righteous. Esprit de corps would be through the roof.

Seeing as how it's senior NCOs that train officer candidates in OCS I'd say that their failure in proper dress falls upon the teachers not the trainees.
