Are dead batteries worth anything? You better believe it! If you're making some money scrapping metal, you're gonna want to be recycling batteries. Lead recycling and scrap batteries add up quickly, making them one of my favorites in scrap metal recycling. It may seem simple but you may have some questions about scrapping old batteries so here's my best guide on the subject, by request. What kind of batteries can you scrap for money? Lead acid batteries yes, what about LiPo batteries? NiCad batteries? NiH, Li-Ion, alkaline? Where do you find other scrap lead? We'll cover it all right here.
Here are the wire cutters I REALLY want!: amzn.to/3adv7kz
This is the cheaper version: amzn.to/2wjkMFd
And here are those grips I recommend: amzn.to/2QCJmYl
(If you make a purchase on amazon through the links above, a small amount of what amazon makes on the sale is shared with me. It's a great way to help support my channel, at no additional cost to you. Even if you buy something other than my tool recommendations!)

This battery reconditioning program exceeded my presumptions. It worked on any drill battery, several AA and AAA batteries batery.repair and any camera battery. The steps are simple and the act itself is exciting to do. No matter what type of battery you`ve got, it is sure to function again!

Oh reconditioning them would definitely get better value out of them. I think that’s why the batteries sell for higher than the lead content, they get recycled and reconditioned somewhere down the line

Good tips on lead acid batteries. Also good advice on alkaline batteries. I was recently told to bring my AA Durocell/Energizer batteries to the fire station and I was doubtful of that device. I've always thrown them in the garbage and now I know it should be fine. They can cause a mess once they start leaking or even can start a fire if all together in a bin or something.

I'm pretty sure you can keep the together in bins so long as they are not compromised and the terminals are taped.

Hello Thub, I came across your channel about a month or so ago and have been enjoying consuming video after video. Thank you for all your great and helpful content. I recently finally collected a decent bag of cans here in St. Louis, MO, USA, and was pleasantly surprised to get $16 and a little change for them. Your channel gives me hope that I could make a decent amount on the side scrapping. I really enjoyed this video and also look forward to more inthus series. I did want to add a couple of options for recycling other [than lead] batteries. Around here we have Best Buys and Batteries Plus retail stores which will recycle any batteries, for free drop off. They don't buy them but do keeping them out of landfills. Also one could purchase a rather expensive Terra Cycle box to recycle batteries for those hard core about keeping them out of landfills. Thanks again. I look forward to your next video! Oh and great send off line. I'll keep leaving it better than I found it. ~Blessings

Another thing about scrapping boats are the "sacrificial anodes". In freshwater boats it's usually magnesium, brackish are zinc and saltwater anodes are usually aluminum. All of these will work in any type of water, but some erode faster than others

Good place to find lead acid batteries is to go your local fire alarm service company. Fire alarm systems and emergency lighting all have battery backups and are replaced frequently. Most companies enjoy the free pickup and give them to you, but you might have some companies request money in return because they know the scrap value. Just make sure you are turning a profit.

Best way is to just put it in a polyethylene bottle to settle out.. if the acid is weak enough, stuffing a cotton ball in a funnel works if your in a hurry but just letting it settle out for a couple of weeks is less hassle and gets it nice and clear.. i have a couple of 10 litre polyethylene water bottles that i use to settle out the lead before distilling the acid for lab use but that is very dangerous unless you really know what your doing

Okay so oddly enough one of the more common things I personally come across are power tools of all sorts that either plain don't work anymore or the batteries and/or chargers are no longer working....idk lol. Anyway....I was actually hoping; when I saw the subject of this particular video; that u would mention these types of batteries and what I should do with them. But sence u did not and I am now commenting I figured I'd ask if u could please do a video about wether or not broken power tools are something worth scrapping and if so how I should go about this? On a side note: when I began scrapping seriously as my side source of income about 2 years ago now, your first scrapping for beginners video was the first one I ever watched and I've been a big fan ever sence! Ur vids are definitely top tier in my opinion compared to others out here in KZfaqsville....lol Anyway I really appreciate how fast, efficient and to-the-point you are in every vid. That along with the fact that it's totally obvious you know what u are doing with all this is so refreshing and that's sadly a rare thing nowadays. Anyway sorry to fangirl out but I'm a believer in giving credit where it's deserved so yeah....please let me know if u can do that vid if u haven't done one about that already...and if u have I'd love to know where I could find it. Thank you for your time! Oh yeah also....my nickname has been Panda sence I was 2 or 3 yrs old and it's my favorite animal next to dogs so....love the follower name you have ESPECIALLY! lol....so thank you for that as well. ☺️😁😬💯💯💯🤓😁🤣 - signed a loyal 🐼 Amanda Sullivan Pine city, MN. 🇺🇸

Lithium Ion batteries, such as those from laptops and portable hoovers, containing 18056 lithium batteries are favoured by hobbyists that build cells for electric vehicles, 'power walls' etc. Each laptop battery contains between 4 and 6 of these cells typically. Cheers Thub!

Yeah, those 18650s are everywhere! I’ve seen the power walls, but a person could also test them and rebuild cordless tool batteries or laptop batteries. I didn’t want to get into it because it would make the video too long and unfocused. That and I don’t know the first thing about it haha! They come in different load ratings, and I wouldn’t want to leave people thinking they’re all the same.

if you end up with a meaningful amount of old car / truck batteries then its worth the investment in a cold crank tester. then you can test the batteries for 12v+ , charge the good ones for a few hours then test the cold cranking amps. this will give you a much better idea of the battery condition. As a diesel engineer i have seen many batteries that hold 12v charges but are still useless. most batteries will have the cold crank amps marked on them as CCA (amps) , you want to be at least 80% of that amount.

Good video and thank you for emphasizing the dangers of dismantling lead/acid batteries. Hopefully you'll have saved someone harm, or at least their clothing 😆 One consideration, at least in some US states is that Pb batteries can be considered "controlled" items with limits placed on how many batteries yards can buy from peddlers on each visit. In Florida the limit is 2.

Batteries are my favorite, though I do not come across many where I am here in the USA. Do you scrap flat screens and sell the parts? I find good money in picking up flat screens with busted screen. I test them and if the tv powers up and is good I sell the boards, buttons, remotes, and cables. Even if the TV is busted I turn in the metal and boards for scrap. Bonus, the plastic (Plexglass?) backer is fun to shoot at with a pellet gun. Only down side is the plastic left overs.

If the voltage is above 12v to 13v it doesn't mean the battery is always good. It may not have any amps to turn over the engine. best way to check is to charge it full then put it in a car with the multimeter set to read 12v. While reading the multimeter try to start the car if the voltage drops past 9v the battery is toast and wont hold up much longer. Most people find out the hard way when they cant start the car once it gets cold out. That battery that reads 12.2v seems like it has a dead cell.
@KevTech1
@KevTech1 3 жыл бұрын
That's too much work and it takes too long. You will know in 3 minutes, if the battery is good or bad, by performing a 3 minute charge test. Connect a battery charger to the battery and then connect a volt meter to the battery. Turn the battery charger on HIGH and watch the volt meter. If after 3 minutes, the battery voltage is over 14.6 volts, the battery is sulfated and will not accept and hold a charge. If the voltage is under 14.6 volts, lower the charger output and continue charging. The 3 Minute charge test came out in the 1970's by Sun Diagnostics with their VAT-40 Test machine.

Try recycling a dead battery at an auto parts store because they will give you store credit if you find one

Dont forget to top off all the batteries with water before you bring them in. Even the sealed ones. There is usually a plate that pops off and plugs on each of the chambers that can be pulled off and put back on after adding a few pounds of water. It might not be worth it if you're bringing 1 battery, but when you have a stack amd you can add 20 lbs of water to the dry cells...

You’re fun to watch, but it would be nice if somebody actually explain the science between the lead panels and how to turn lead oxide back in the lead.

Board Sort pays 40 cents a pound for lead. Yesterday, I brought UPS batteries in with my escrap and got 15 cents a pound. I have pulled apart a car battery once and there were not lead plates. There were like pouches in the shape of a plate filled with lead pellets. Very not making any sense. Lucky for me, my escrap yard also takes lithium ion batteries for the same price, so I throw in those that I randomly find and hey, another 5 cents. Ok. Alkalines? I throw em into my steel bin.

That anode, red lead was sold 30$ / pound, 7 years a go. So you might check your pricing and buyers accountability again...:D

One has to wonder, why do they give more for a whole battery than they do for the lead inside?
