Surprised you didn't have safety glasses on sooner like your brother. That splashing can get you. A hacksaw does the best job. It cuts through the entire plastic housing cleanly, as well as any lead bars.

I was a burn therapist at the Institute for Surgical Research, Burn Center and Extremity Trauma Center at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio Texas for years. You cannot imagine the different ways people got themselves burned. I treated patients who made their own homemade canons, which subsequently exploded. Decided to take a radiator cap off while the engine was still hot (common). Tried to rescue a kite from power lines using a metal pole. Looked into a gas tank with a butane lighter' to see if it was empty. And every type of industrial accident you can imagine. None of them ever thought they were going to get hurt, because they believed that it was never going to be them. I appreciate your attempt at educating people, but in the future I wish you would take better safety precautions, especially when working with sulfuric acid and the subsequent sulfuric gas. Good luck in the future on not getting injured, I really really mean that.👍

@@IMightBeIris bit late, but most plastic is immune to most acid. I've got 98 percent sulfuric and 35(ish) percent hydrochloric and 68 percent nitric, 100 percent oxalic and 100 percent formic acid all in plastic containers. The only iffy one there is the nitric acid. The sulfuric acid will eat through the plastic container, but not in your lifetime. At room temperature the reaction is incredibly slow. At 200C (i.e. above the melting point of the plastic anyway) the long chain hydrocarbons get broken down into shorter ones and eventually into carbon tar. Some very few plastics are vulnerable to sulfuric acid, mostly ones with OH groups like cellulose or PLA.

Cool! The lead is soft and spongy for maximum surface area. Id like to see you take apart a deep cycle battery and look at the comparison between the plates. Also the pool store near me sells very pure 30% sulfuric acid by the gallon, have you seen it in stores near you? Maybe its just Florida thing, but it might be worth letting people know instead of dealing with yucky lead filled acid!

As an auto parts store employee, I don't get tearing apart a perfectly good battery. You can buy acid by the quart at most parts stores. As a veteran mechanic (35 years ) I have never had a battery explode on a vehicle that I was working on, but I have seen others explode .Hydrogen Sulfide is the gas produced by a charging battery, and it WILL explode. The gas you attempted to light was carbon dioxide, the result of most acid + baking soda reactions. Including the vinegar + baking soda that makes so many science fair volcanoes work. Vinegar contains approx. 5% acetic acid.

screwyluie it's just bad safety procedure in general not to mention an older battery might have a higher concentrated acid mixture in it due to evaporated water. Better to be safe doing this stuff than get hurt because you didn't take precautions.

They sure didnt teach us anything about car batteries or any other kind at my schools and i went to a few different ones because we moved alot, maybe you shouldnt assume everyone knows what you do, just like i dont assume you know everything i do, Its "special" because they show you something that most people wouldnt feel safe enough to do themself, For example i had no idea if it was pressurized or under vacuum which could lead to instant evaporation and dispersion when opened.

Three things, 1. pouring out the contents shouldn't be done in the way you did it, you should have tackled one cell at a time, that is the safest way. 2. you should have poured the neutralizing solution into the cells until the reaction ceased before you tried hacking the case open. 3. once neutralized and safe, you could drain the battery of the solution and then use a cutting tool like a hand drill (Dremel type) and cut the top off to extract the lead plates.
@darksingularity1692
@darksingularity1692 7 жыл бұрын
If you neutralize the solution then how do you harvest the sulfuric acid?
@thepvporg
@thepvporg 7 жыл бұрын
antiswattt3 To clarify... 1. Undo one cell at a time and then pour out contents. 2. Pour in neutralizing solution in to cell to ensure it is neutralized when empty, as in all cells have been emptied. 3. then you can safely open and take apart the battery without fear of shorting out plates.
@thepvporg
@thepvporg 7 жыл бұрын
antiswattt3 Not childish, just wise. They could have also charged the cell to ensure that any displaced lead was returned to the plate

No need. The sulfuric acid is not very concentrated, and the only reaction occurring significantly enough to possible harm you is the acid-base, but it won't because the only gas produced is CO2.
