Herodotus does not mention Cavalry at Marathon. He mentions cavalry 9 times. None of them in relation to Marathon.

yes. There were cavalry there. They did not participate in the battle. Herodotus does not mention this, nor does any other source. We know they were present, we can estimate the numbers, but it is assumed they were - foraging, or did not make it to the battle field in time. As they were 'stabled' some distance away, up a narrow single file pass.

he mentioned about the charging forward of the cavalry, persians attack the infantry then the cavalry as their habit tactics, cavalry as always 2nd waves or always in left and right flanks to protect its center flanks

The notion that the majority died at the beach by the ships is probably wrong. The battle took place far more inland than one would think, the Athenians was positioned in a way that made it impossible for the cavalry to attack the flanks (perfect use of terrain before and in this battle). So the Persians was probably the ones who approached the Greeks and within a proper distance the Greeks charged. By the time the Persians routed the Athenians did not pursue at once but hade no organize themselves again (which is always a must do after the enemy routed and a short chase has happened). When the Athenians attacked again, which deserves credit since that rarely happened at this point in time after an enemy route, only 7 ships was captured. That is a very modest number for a time of bragging, exaggeration and blatant falsehoods ... so it is safe to say that it is very unlikely the Persian army suffered the heaviest casualties there and not in the main battle. However it could also be that Herodotos who is the source in this original case, also included non-military personal like servants and slaves. That would make a bit more sense.

1. NO Cav present on the battle field from what I have read, so yes a foraging assignment is most likely cause of their absence from teh majority of the battle 2.The Stadia run did not cause the Archers of Persia to over shoot. I dont hink any many can run that fast? 3. John Kranz new bookMarathon provides nice insight to the Stadia run, and the battle overall. 4. I 'd have to disagree with the description of Cav being swept away, no sources I have read describe this Livy etc. Very nice.

There was no horses in the moment of the battle as the Ionian soldiers forced to fight to the Persian side or paid to do so had told their Greek comarades... That is why they made the assault... "The horses are gone"

+Saifthebest01 The name "Pheidippides" is mentioned only in a Middle Age manuscript about the battle. And most scholars now agree that is a misspelling of the original name, which should pe read Phillippides (at least this is the opinion of prof. Donald Kagan of Yale University). Best regards.

no, they have..according to herodatus, athenians center faced immortals, while the anthenians left and right strong flanks faced the strong persian cavalry and maneuvered to KNOCK all the persian lines!

The Persian cavalry was rendered useless by Miltiades's use of terrain. Any alleged assignment they were late to return from is a moot point.
@TheAiurica
@TheAiurica 8 жыл бұрын
+FFcecil1991 The cavalry was not present at Marathon. The cavalry and about 15.000 persian infantry were aboard persian ships heading for Phaleron Bay, planning to occupy undefended Athen. Those 19.000 persians at Marathon had the task to pin down athenian forces while the rest would occupy Athen and restore Hippias as tyran.

Cipi Ripi They sent the cavalry and some infantry on the ships toward Athens after the first engagements. But, yes they were there and rendered useless in the early fighting.
@TheAiurica
@TheAiurica 8 жыл бұрын
FFcecil1991 Probably they left behind a small party of cavalry, but since Herodotus made no mention of any persian cavalry in battle, it could be a small (almost insignifiant) cavalry party, and for sure not their best cavalry. Persian cavalry had a fearsome reputation in those days, so Herodotus would mention it. But, since no mention about persian cavalry is made, I must assume that it was small enough to be worthless mention it, and probably not the best cavalry available. Best regards.

He who? The guy making the video is incorrect. Herodotus did not mention cavalry my friend. if so show me the paragraph? Read The Battle of Marathon by David Krantz. I dont want to argue 500 characters at a time. You are not correct.

Nice video, BUT totaly wrong... This tactic is the first theory of battle, but today (about a few decades) we know, that this is for 99% wrong and unlogic tactic.... The right is, that Greeks comes from south to the north (from Athens) and they have got see on their right side... The Persians had see on their left side... As a proof, we cant take one of much more examples - Persians (right wing of them) run after battle into the swamp... and, if they had, as you are saying here, see behind them and ships, which can save them, why would they run into the swamp?... it is simple, the right wing of Persians (Persians had left wing next to the see) was too far from see, so they run into the swamp... But it is cool, this (your) tactic is in books, schools, etc... but today historians know, it is wrong...
