@@2ears1mouth786 great military commander, but a horrible politician, those territories has never been truly united, it was impossible to erase thousands of years of foreign conquest and different political and personal interests in such a short time. He should have tried to gain the full trust of the peoples and the nobles from the three principalities before starting such a difficult and daring campaign, also the international situation was totally against him, the three great powers in the region were at peace with one another, and none of the three didn't wanted a strong Romanian country because was against their interests. If I have to describe him in one word I would use the word: reckless.
@totoianugheorghelucian488

@Free Spirited Cat To achieve the unity of all the regions inhabited by the Romanians, a long campaign was needed to promote this idea and to obtain the support of the nobility and the citizens of these regions. Mihai, on the contrary, did the exact opposite, surpassing the inhabitants of both Wallachia and those of the other regions after unification, this led to the lack of support of their subjects. Also due to the apparent peace between the great powers of the region, it was very difficult to find allies, the only ones who supported him to a certain extent were the Habsburgs, in the first phase Mihai had to accept the sovereignty of Emperor Rudolf, at least until the new country would have stabilized. Also before the unification, after the successful campaign against the Ottomans in the first years of rule and the creation of some kind of stability in Wallachia, the country had to be restored militarily and economically. Also the excessive use of mercenaries for me is a problem, this has led to the weakening of the normal army, and also led to leaving the country a very large amount of money, money that could have been used to improve their own army.

This was so sad, seeing how genuis he was and the amount of success he had but to still fall in the end due to having many powerful enemies and the generally poor state of his powerbase of Wallachia resorting to many unpopular reforms and the heavily reliance on mercenaries to secure his kingdom.
@Madhattersinjeans
@Madhattersinjeans 4 жыл бұрын
Happens with a lot of generals. They win battles but they can't rule kingdoms. If these reforms are accurate then Mihai was destined to lose his control of the territory he recently conquered. And sooner or later you have to stop using mercenaries and need time to train your own troops. I'm guess he knew he was a wanted man from all of his neighbours and desperately tried to raise enough men to fight them all off. It is a losing strategy, and would never have worked. He needed someone to support him, just 1 neighbour. Difficult situation really.

Three suggestions that I desperately want to see. First, the Battle of Emmaus. Betzalel Bar-Kokhva's excellent book on the Maccabean Revolt is a great source for this, giving a detailed account of the battle. Second, the Battle of Oravais. The climax of the 1809 Russo-Swedish War, it's a battle that really deserves more renoun. Thirdly, the Battle of Hulao. It's a Chinese battle, the greatest victory of Li Shimin, and one of history's most amazing victories against the odds. Please do these. I'd love to see them.

Mihai the Brave was one the best generals of the 16th century, but even he was not invincible. With Hapsburg Austria, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Ottoman Empire closing in on the Romanians I'm guessing that this is gonna go the same way that the American Civil War would eventually go. The Romanians will fight tooth and nail, and win many battles, but they will gradually be worn down and overwhelmed by the massive amounts of manpower and resources that their opponents can throw at them.

Kingdoms werent harmonious entities, in the end it was a oppressive feudal system that exploited peasants and made them serfs. I dont think they cared back then if it was a wallachian, german or polish noble who took their grain. Fact is they were better off with their previous oppressors than with Mihai.

Another contradicting point of yours is that "they were better with their previous oppressors than with Mihai" man you either dont know history or are biased af,you on your own words said "previous oppressors" how can they be better with oppressors? Mihai wasn't a oppressor he taxed them because the country was in grave danger and so many others did the same but you condemn him without knowing the context,so your opinion is invalid. Funny you mention the feudal system when the system we use today is not different maybe its even the same with modern caracters which once again won't satisfy your biased views so you won't even do some research on the topic,the world didnt really change much we just adapted,improvized and overcame the test of time.

Such a nice surprise, I didn't expect the next part to come so fast! My prediction from the last episode was obviously wrong. 3:55 Rudolf could have allied with Michael to take back land in Hungary and weaken the Ottoman who are a bigger threat. Create more buffer state to protect his Austrian and Bohemian land from the Ottoman.
@christendombaffler
@christendombaffler 4 жыл бұрын
The Habsburgs' greed back then was unimaginable. They didn't just want to drive a wedge in the Ottomans' side - they wanted that wedge to be theirs and theirs alone, hence the direct conquests that came after 1683. Second biggest reason why we like them even less than the Ottomans (the biggest one being, obviously, Hungary). It's hard to have anything remotely resembling a positive view of the great powers of Europe in this time period, at least the ones that interacted with us. Yes, Poland, you too.
@Kissakana
@Kissakana 4 жыл бұрын
Ottoman army was still stronger than Rudolf II's and perhaps if Michael joined to a offensive war there could've been revolts which would've been harder to deal with. Also there is possibility of Rudolf II having to do "Imperial duties" as he was Holy Roman Emperor in that era. Of course, they could've asked for help from other nations against the rising threat but as the battle of Vienna proved in 1683 it wasn't easy to get strong enough allies back then. Then there is also possibility of Austria having a truce with Ottomans and truce breaker title isn't what a Holy Roman Emperor would want...

I am very very impressed with Basta here. In pre-modern times it is very very rare for an army to get surprised by a hillside ambush, forced to turn and flee, and then suddenly stop the rout and reorganize itself, to even execute a double envelopment on the pursuing enemy. The nomads do it, but it's easier for nomads since they are mostly mounted, the pursuers' cavalry can get easily separated from infantry and get picked off first. Here Basta is also fleeing with infantry, and this makes it more impressive.

You are correct, he was in Prague.
