Mr. Driller by Namco was released at a time when everyone had to have some kind of action puzzle game to there credit. But is it one that stands out or one that fails?
There are many versions of Mr. Driller but only the arcade game and those based upon it are featured in this video.
Time Code
00:30 - Arcade (This section has a sound emulation issue)
03:29 - Game Boy Colour
05:48 - Wondre Swan Colour
07:28 - Mobile Phone - Java version
09:05 - PlayStation
11:29 - Dreamcast
13:52 - All versions
Enjoy!

And if it isn't apparent yet: this game's title character is son of Taizou Hori of Dig Dug and Tobi Masuyo from the Japan-only arcade game "Baraduke". Thank you, Namco x Capcom.

There's also a Windows port as well, that's the version I tend to play when I'm in the mood for this game.

Actually I think the PlayStation version went for a video intro since reproducing the intro realtime with sprites would have taken a lot of RAM, something that the PlayStation doesn't have much of. Heck, even the Dreamcast version has problems replicating the arcade's version intro because of RAM (Why the f is the background at the start of the Dreamcast's intro very pixelated???). Also, the intro from the PlayStation version doesn't even seem to use exact arcade intro but a "prerendered" version of it (as in predrawn) because the transparencies seem to look smoother and seems to animate better than the arcade (though the transparencies being better than the arcade could be given to bad arcade emulation if it is)

I wouldn't draw too many comparisons re graphics - youtube gets in the way of that. I play this on Dreamcast and it is gorgeous. It jumps off the screen in RGB SCART + CRT or VGA on a flat screen. Beautiful looking port. No idea what the PS1 version is like.

Man, I didn't know the arcade and Dreamcast versions looked *that* nice. PS1 version's the one I've known most (thanks to the NamCollection on PS2) I was gonna mention Mr. Driller W (WiiWare), but the only similarity it has with the original is the music, as it seems to be its own thing. In fact, after checking, it seems to be a severely cutdown version of Drill Land on GameCube. Thanks, Namco.

Considering the Mr Driller arcade board was based on a PlayStation, it BETTER have come home close to arcade perfect on the PlayStation. Dreamcast looks real nice too - I’m guessing it would likely do 480p over VGA which is also a big plus.
@RetroCore

Yep, 480p on Dreamcast. Or at least the Japanese one is.

played this on PC version, which from i've seen here, based on ps1 version. also the original arcade is ps1 based namco system 1x lineup (like tekken series until tag tournament), so yea, it should be on par with home port (with probably lower resolution and some stuffs)

I feel so bad for Mr. Driller. The whole city is too lazy to solve their own problems so, they call Mr. Driller to do it for them alone with a high risk of being crushed or suffocation. Even if his mission is successful, is it really worth it?

@RetroCore
@RetroCore 8 жыл бұрын
It is pretty much spot on but the resolution is slightly different. You can tell by the air meter. On the arcade and Dreamcast it's not perfectly round but on the PlayStation it is. Not that it really matters or makes any difference to the game.

Another game I'm awful at, but that I do like. Did you by any chance consider to include the Gamecube mr. Driller Drill Land ?The arcade mode on it is pretty much regular mr Driller albeit with different graphics and music.
@RetroCore

I did consider it but in the end I left it out due to the different look. It's more of a sequel than a port.

+Retro Core The GBC port is impressive due to how many sprites are on screen at once, but it is due to WEAKER hardware not lazy porting.

+CplDwayneHicks11 The game its self is not a fail but the fact that this is all the DC got from Namco while the PS2 got so many amaziong games is a bit of a kick in the face to Namco Sega fans.
@CplDwayneHicks11
@CplDwayneHicks11 8 жыл бұрын
Add Konami and EA right next to them. No excuses for Namco to not port over the likes of Ridge Racer Type 4, Time Crisis 2 and even Tekken 3 arcade one to the Dreamcast. Even Sega lost the plot at the end telling developers to abandon the Dreamcast. We lost out on Monkey Ball, cel shaded House Of The Dead 3 and Virtual Fighter 4 which I'm sure the Dreamcast would have handle them all.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 8 жыл бұрын
Actually, Konami did kind of suport the Dreamcast in Japan with the Pop'n Music and DDR games. EA though, I couldn't care less about ;)
@CplDwayneHicks11

Not enough for the world market though when MGS & Silent Hill were ruling over PS1. You may not care but you did say PS2 was having amazing games would EA made SSX for the Dreamcast? Sure would off.

Regarding the Game Boy Color version, I think the slowdown is the result of an emulation bug (I assume emulation is what you use to capture footage?). I own a CIB copy of this game and have played it multiple times, and not once have I noticed any kind of slowdown - in fact, I'd say it's on par with the other versions in terms of speed. Though I can at least agree the music is pretty bad.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this one was made via emulation. That could have been the reason for the slowdown. Thankfully now I have the means to record from real GBC hardware.
