Nekketsu Kōha Kunio-kun in Japan was a game released in 1985 that had high school drop outs and Yakuza causing all sorts of trouble. The game came out in the west 1 year later with all new graphics and name of Renegade.

Only version I ever played was the C64 version. It was a cracked version with an infinite lives trainer and had a tutorial in the cracked intro. It also had this tune that was darker and grittier than the actual game music. From memory (30 odd years ago) the tutorial outlines that you have to use the keyboard for the moves, I think it was the cursor keys, I can't remember if the space bar was used for jump or not. I do remember that it was surprisingly responsive, though also kinda awkward. I never got to the end. It wasn't too bad to play, especially considering just how bad Double Dragon ended up being on the C64, but man, watching this video made me REALLY JEALOUS of Amstrad CPC owners. That version looks terrific! As for the impressive Nintendo and Master System versions, I had already seen a rundown of them on Top Hat Man Gaming's Renegade video

I LOVED the Amstrad version back in the day!. The tape we had for it stopped loading correctly and was sooooo gutted as we could not find it in the shops what so ever for like 6 months. Luckily the 'HIT SQUAD' re-releases happened and got it again for £2.99 sadly the 'HIT SQUAD' re-releases didnt come in the larger cassette cases!, but was sooo stoked to get the game again!

Absolutely baffled by your appraisal of the ZX Spectrum version. It's often lauded as one of the machines best games. When I finally got my hands on the original arcade version I was so disappointed, it didn't play anything like I was expecting and was cumbersome to control. I guess a big part of it is what you grew up with and what your expectations are but Renegade on the Spec is roundly considered to be an excellent port.

I have to say I am a huge fan of your channel and love your honest and frank reviews but like a few others I think you got the Spectrum version wrong. I grew up with a variety of systems in the 80s I like to think I'm pretty unbiased however I think as 2 guys of the same golden age of gaming (and also a huge lover of everything arcade from those days and bitterly upset with a number of sub-standard conversions) the big difference is I played everything on a keyboard and rarely touched a joystick on the home computers and even to this day play 95% of all my games on the keyboard (new and old, only time the pad comes out is when I have to do one of those horrible flying missions on GTA 5 or something!). Anyway the Spectrum was not difficult, it was a challenge but beatable and I did beat it many a time as a 11 year old! The graphics were neat, the music was ace and the speed was spot on. I only recently tried the arcade game and I couldn't of level 3! I don't know if that was me losing my touch or that for me the arcade version is actually harder! I honestly think you should give the home computer ports a go on the keyboard more often to see if you find it any different, I never remember feeling limited by buttons or games on my spectrum, c64 or amiga to be perfectly honest and I never used a joystick. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge retro console fan and still own a megadrive, saturn and dreamcast, me and the kids dusted off the DC for a few games of power stone 2 and DoA2 over the bank holidays and a gamepad has it's place but a keyboard if setup right is just as good if not better! (cursor keys, shift for jump and ctrl for fire = 80% of the time all you need!) This is my classic FPS shooter setup as well I can do all of that with one hand (ctrl for crouch though) and the other for aim and shoot!

@johnporter3259
@johnporter3259 7 жыл бұрын
Well tbh we all have our own preferences and maybe games don't always emulate as well as they did in real time, generally your reviews are spot on or at least honest, arcade games were so often just crashed out with little care (or unrealistic deadlines), maybe it's my hazy memory but I really enjoyed that version and was able to beat it as a kid! Anyway keep up the good work! I log on ever Sunday night after my weekly game to see what you have reviewed this week :> The only other time I disagreed with your view was on Final Fight when you was surprisingly generous with the Amiga review considering your dislike for the system (Kidding! ! :>) I bought that game and thought it was so poor it should not have been released! When you look at what they did with the mighty mega cd version with similar processing power and graphic capabilities it was a simply a steaming pile! FF was one of my all time arcade favourites and I had the miss fortune to not only get the Spectrum version for my +2 but also the Amiga version, talk about cheated! US gold owe me for one unhappy childhood!
@jimkrom

John Porter if you think played most of your games on keyboard on the Amiga, then you remember something wrong. Less than 5% of the Amiga games allowed the use of keyboard and maybe the percentage I gave is too high tbh

Renegade on C64 used th top-left 3 keys for multi-direction attacks, one punches/kicks left, one jumps, one punches/kicks right. It's kinda awkward to play with both joystick/pad and keyboard but it works very well.

We shall have to agree to disagree on the Spectrum port. Played it recently and still love it, it is beatable with practice and getting your tactics down. Back and fire kicks behind you, you can also throw enemies on the Speccy port. The ST & Amiga games are appalling.

The ZX Spectrum version was excellent and my favourite version outside of the arcade. I can't understand you saying it's stupidly hard, I can loop through it 3 or 4 times, and the speed and controls feel perfect. The arcade version is stupidly hard, if anything......the default settings only give you one life and even if you do clear all the stages once (which I have) then you'll never manage it a second time as it ramps the difficulty right up and the enemies take way too long to knock out.

The C64 port was pretty good. I played the death out of it back in my childhood. Shame more programmers never bothered to copy the control scheme for other arcade ports.

As a C64 head, I was always embarrassed by the Commodore port when compared to the other 8-bit versions. It should've been called Lego Renegade. As for the controls, you use a combination of joystick and keyboard like the CPC version (but the keys are obviously different). Time hasn't been too kind to this game overall, though and the original game was always slightly above average at best.

It makes me sad to see some of the rushed arcade ports done on the Atari ST and Amiga. Do you think if they had been shown the same love as the Sharp X68000 when it came to developing arcade ports, and the skill involved the ST and Amiga arcade ports could have been better ? Imagine the team behind the Lotus Turbo Esprit games had done Out Run on the Amiga/ST.

The Japanese version of Renegade actually came out in May of 1986 while the US version came out in late 1986 which is less than a year's wait for the USA.

According to a history on Technos the Japanese game was released in 1985. Maybe there's an error and that should be developed in 1985?

Retro Core Yet arcade-history.com says that the Japanese version of Renegade was released in May of 1986 so I'm very confused.
@RetroCore
@RetroCore 7 жыл бұрын
Jac2Mac Hmm, maybe the ROM is copyrighted as 1985 and it had a limited run which is where the Japanese site gets 1985 from but it didn't actually go nation wide until 1986? It's a strong possibility.

Yep. The C64 game uses joystick and keyboard to play, I want to say it's something like left arrow, 1 and 2 for punch, jump and kick actions. Why you needed a joystick with suckers on back then to play it properly!

No doubt the 8 bit grand era... I loved the amstrad version, and the c64 as well. My friends were all hyped by the spectrum version, but it only ticked me the sequel - Target renegade. The 16 bit version only found very later on and found that I didn't loose much... Even the arcade version was met after double dragon and final fight so I wasn't impressed by it at that time.

End of 1985 was when it went on location test. . That's from the Japanese source. May 86 was the official nationwide release date. so technically, yes it was released in 1985, sort of.

I've always found the Japanese tradition of giving games descriptive names, rather than calling them something catchy, to be rather weird. What do they call the game of Checkers in Japan? "Black and red discs on colored squares"?

@@osakatales9228 Yes, but often the Japanese name is a literal description of what the game/movie is. I don't remember what it was now, but several years ago, I read about some movie where the Japanese name translated to something like "Cop With Big Gun Goes Rogue".

Crap SPECCY version ? 1st : using keyboard controls, it's totally playable (yep, CPC version is great using keyboard n stick, but hit box is crap) 2nd: Idk for the C64 version but the 128k SPECCY have the throw move (same as arcade one), the best way to get out opponents quickly. This move doesn't exist on CPC nor AMIGA version. This point is important, cause I never played home vrsion with all character moves (throwing, running, finishing etc ...) My best loop is 4 on speccy ... maybe you should learning control and mechanics to beat the game 1 time ... Kunio kun is famous in japan, why don't show us the arcade differences ? Sorry retro core, but this time, you failed

I've heard about this game, but actually never played it...or so I thought, until I saw your video. Back in the day I had a cart for NES 8 games in 1 and one of those games was called Hot Blood Boy in the selection list. Title screen of the game itself was in Japanese. For years I suspected that it may have some ties with Kunio-Kun sports series, due to the similar style and same developer. I must admit, I actually hated it. It was very hard and boring.
