When the first BFG:A released, my computer was so shit ships and the map refuse to render, so I have to direct engagements using only UI, Minimap, and ship's status bars floating amidst the dark void that was supposed to be the actual battlefield. I somehow had way more fun than a pitch black screen with RTS UI on it had any right to offer me. I mean it's incredible, I literally can't see shit yet I am having fun.

This configuration halves the damage output of its primary weapons, but that halved value is fired at EVERY ship in range. So if there is a single enemy cruiser in range, then it only does half damage to that one cruiser. But if there are a dozen small ships in range, each gets hit with that halved damage value

As someone who did play the original board game quite frequently, I'd say that they basically did what the Space Hulk guys tried to do by carrying some stylistic elements over into the strategy game, but BFG did it right. A lot of things (in particular the Special Orders) but also some of the maneuvers and odd mechanics like the scattering novacannon feel like a direct carryover from the tabletop. This was more obvious in the first game because of the much smaller scale and detail on each ship, but they still did a lot of mechanical decisions inspired by the tabletop.

I love how you are literally encouraged through gameplay to go kamikaze when one of your ships' destruction is inevitable. It's not only promotes an aggressive, hold nothing back kind of gameplay, but it just fits 40K so damn well. Fanatical Imperial captains ramming full speed into the middle of an enemy fleet in the name off the God Emperor is exactly what I want out of them. And since it's 40K, this works with every faction. Maybe some less so than others, like the Eldar, but for the most part, it makes perfect sense. One small detail through gameplay that fleshes out the 40K experience. I love it.

I recently beat BFGA2's imperial campaign. At one point I overwrote my solo save accidentally and lost 7 months of progress. This game is so good that I immediately replayed that 7 months of campaign and enjoyed it even more. Nearly 300 hours I got out of it, the value for money in this game and general quality are god tier.

The crashes are an unreal engine issue, I've had it on multiple unreal engine games this year (including this one), it's a very easy fix too if you're ever experiencing crashes in unreal engine related with a message along the lines of "Win64-Shipping.exe" forgot what the exact error was, but everytime it's the 64bit exe of the game in question. Go to nvidia control panel, set OpenGL Rending GPU forced to your GPU on your global profile, not to auto, EVEN if you're on a PC and not a laptop, developers of 2 games (Red Solstice 2, Deep Rock Galactic) also noticed it happend each time with calls from the rendering engine that it would crash, we don't know why it works, that's literally all you have to do and your unreal engine games will never crash with that error again. Do note that newer games and demos are often not recognized by the nvidia control panel so you might have to create a profile and apply the forced setting there for the exe, otherwise you'll still crash.

One of the things that actually annoyed me about the campaign once I realised it, was that the AI fleets really don't function the same way as the players. They pretty much just auto spawn overtime rather than actually needing to hold planets and actually build up the same way the player does.

There is also a mod out called Skalgrim, that severely amps up the battle scale of things. They managed to unlock adding new ships entirely, so they've been working on adding a whole lot of ships to each race as well, adding a whole lot more choice and variety. A lot has been changed as well, to make large fleet engagements more brutal. You generally can't just like, sit in a cloud and pew pew the enemy from afar when the screen is filling with ork ships :D. The only caveat, is that if you're playing as the Necron, if your system can't handle the scale of the battle and starts lagging, 75% of their firepower becomes useless, because it scatters and never hits. It looks very pretty though while it doesn't hit. Still, for pvp and especially for the campaign, I can recommend it, it's bunches of fun!

See, this is nothing like Homeworld and everything like Treasure Planet: Battle for Procyon. Which is A) Real, B) Shockingly good and C) by the homeworld: catacylsm devs which...does explain B.

Now we just need a 4k 40k that combines Dawn of War, Planet and system management, and ground and space combat.

I played it way too much and mostly had fun. But some parts annoyed me a lot: 1. The campaigns are helllllaaa grindy. 2. The AI makes some way too obvious mistakes, like Tyrannid ships regularly ramming each other to death before the battle even starts. 3. I feel like the mechanics are a fair bit too simple. In single player there often is little to no benefit to doing anything but running around in a blob and focus firing one enemy after the other, for example because ships tend to have the same armour in all directions and because surrounding an enemy just lets them shoot more of their guns. And direct damage skills just seem way overpowered. 4. The special campaign missions are mostly boring. Outside very few encounters with awesome unique ships, the special mechanics are all just "avoid the red AoE circle". The chaos rocks really annoyed me with how unimaginative they were - in five different battles.... (except the teleporting ones, those actually created some interesting situations). 5. The huge background structures on some maps dwarve even the biggest battleships , which kinda ruins the sense of scale. Not sure how canon they are, but they seem overly common for their absurd scale. 6. Singleplayer highly encourages an all big ship lineup, the only reason I could see for small vessels is scanning. There is little attachment to veteran ships from the early game. It's kind odd since the game seems to frame the ability to bring more escort ships as a bonus that you have to earn, when in reality I only want the bare minimum to have a forwards scanner. It may be an unfair comparison because each player only has a single ship there, but World of Warships showed how to get much more depth out of the basic mechanics. There it is all about getting to the enemy's broadside to hit the core parts of the ship or to score multiple hits in a torpedo salvo. That strongly encourages both sides to contest the flanks and therefore spread out wide rather than just move in a single blob (which would inevitably get flanked by a battleship with big guns or drown in torpedo soup from all directions), creating many more tactical situations depending on the map layout and particular ship combinations. Performance on the other hand was good for me, especially the short loading times into battles were very welcome after Total War. The only issue I experienced were some oddly long loading menus (especially the ship construction menu somehow takes like 10 seconds), FPS were very good on an older laptop with medium-high settings.
