A subtle way of showing she’s no respect for Roslin’s authority

Watching this clip today was the first time I ever put that together, glad to see this in the comments Just goes to show how deep this show is. 7 complete rewatches and rewatched this episode who knows how many times, and I can still come away with a new nugget of depth

I'm inclined to think that Cain has been haunted by the fear of a situation where she might be called to account for the atrocities she's committed prior to encountering the Galactica fleet, and she's rehearsed this justification to herself so many times that when the dreaded moment finally arrives and her panic level is dialed to max, she reflexively parrots her comforting phrase like a little kid reaching for her safety blanket, without even stopping to think that the actual legal reasoning technically no longer applies.

@@paqx3534 when I first saw the pegasus and Galactica reunite, I thought the atmosphere was odd, especially when Admiral Caine welcomed the galactica back to the fleet even though the pegasus was a lone ship while the galactica had an entire civillian fleet and a civil head of state, of course it becomes evident that Caine was a tyrant who assumed control and sought to maintain it despite protocol dictating otherwise

@@willg-r3269 'He's left me with no choice' she practically whispers this because she knows its clear to everyone on control deck that there are a multitude of options, but none that Caine will willingly take, the way that everyone on deck looks when she orders to launch the alert fighters really gets across the knifes edge the Admiral is walking, she's only managed to prevent a mutiny at this point through fear, extrajudicial execution of the XO, swift killing of dissidents, when her XO argues with her in this scene despite all this it shows just how tense the chain of command is on the pegasus, this situation could have just have easily boiled over to mutiny, practically a dice roll

Without he's input in this show it would be half of what it is truly!

Prelude to War is a fantastic piece of music. Really love the eerie bit near the end of it.

The music in this absolutely makes this scene. That, coupled with the camerawork.

One of my all-time favorite TV scores is Prelude to War from this scene. Truly heart-pounding.

There is an old clip of Dr. Feynman talking about his antics back in the nuclear bomb days where he talks about the military guys. He was always impressed at how they could make huge decisions very quickly...cause he could never make up his mind about anything.

Adama also became a hero to the colons. For those who joined the human fleet, he was their commander and chief too.

@@Hdbdbdby no, that wasn't his point at all. His point was how they could quickly weigh out consequences and come to a conclusion. He was impressed. It wasn't a slam on his part.

Other way round. It was Adama who was willing to cripple or destroy Galactica, along with probably crippling Pegasus. He started this fight by mutiny against his superior officer. He had the best reasons, but he started it nevertheless.

@@Cailus3542 and another way arround, she was willing to escalate and provoke him, for what? Executing two mens that have been detrimental assets in this war for survival? And she's also willing to open fire with main batteries when there's a whole fleet of civilians right behind and arround the galactica, that goes to say a lot more.

@@thehatred94 cain didnt actualy care about civilians, considering that pegasus showed up alone even though pegasus itself had a civilian fleet at one point but consumed them to fix pegasus and she left the civilians for dead. So it aint realy suprising she would be fine with civilian caualties, considering those ships would have ended up in the same fate as pegasus fleet eventualy anyways

I read it more as power-crazed or slightly insane... unable to cope with the reality that there is no more Proud Fleet... only a rag tag band of survivors. The rules must be adapted to the situation, not quotations from legal regulations penned by a now dead Empire. She would not or could not adapt to the new reality: Survival is priority one.

Something that always bothered me about that line of argument is that the entire civilian government is present on another ship. The Admiral is not on detached service.

And without a gun to back them up, the "government" can only write words on a page ... they NEED each other: The government needs the military to enforce their edicts, because without that force their edicts wouldn't mean squat AND the military needs the government to maintain its "legitimacy". When push comes to shove, though, "he who has the guns makes the rules". So glad that, at least in America, The Founders recognized this, and made a provision that recognizes EVERYONE'S inalienable right of self-defense, so there wouldn't be a monopoly on violence -- would if we could return to their wisdom again. One of the things that really set BSG apart is their exploration of such topics government/force -- truly excellent.

James Edward Olmos first captured my attention on the great film American Me. Danny Trejo was just getting started. Ever since, Neither actor has disappointed me one bit.

Olmos never fails to Stand and Deliver.

The pained expression reveals a realization that the relief and help of the Pegasus is lost and they are now enemies. Something he was hoping to avoid.

I think it's the opposite. She instantly realised what had happened and knew what Adama was going to do. She knew he wouldn't back down and was shocked at the prospect of an inevitable, terrible battle against fellow humans. That was a face of realisation - "we're going to fight Pegasus".

Regardless of what is going through her mind, the decision to focus the camera on her reaction as the commander is talking was genius. It's also a way to resonate with the audience reaction.

I like also the crew behavior. No one questioning Adama, but on Pegasus everyone unsure how to handle that mad dog that is their admiral

With anyone, it's the best way to act while waiting for instructions after having layed out all your information. You don't want to disturb and pollute the decision making that is currently going on in Adama's head in this critical moment. And tbh, as far as I'm concerned, it's the same thing with everybody, people have to make decisions, when a person with the responsibility of making it has been given all information and council, the moment demands silence and waiting.

It's really hard watching scenes like this, to see how far everything else has fallen. The writing, acting, directing, music, all of it was just perfect. Such great attention to detail, characters act rationally in their own mindset, etc. Just this one scene has so many small subtle moments that just perfectly set it all up.

@@stevenschiro1838 couldn't agree more. That's why BSG is my favourite show ever. Really good writing ( both in character and story ), fun dialogues, stellar acting even from the supporting cast, great music and CGI. The whole package. It's how its done. Vare rare these days.

I think she was popular on pegasus overall. They were scared because they were about to fight their own. But, the fight was over two galactica men killing a pegasus man to defend the honor of a machine, an object, in their eyes.

Adama commanded through the "respect" of spacing people who opposed his rule. He's not much better than Cain.

Idk if it was so much fear of Cain as much as fear of the uncertain. She was popular for leading the Pegasus thru hard times and making difficult decisions and I believe she did command the respect of her crew who have been on their own without any civilian flotilla so basically living under a military junta. I think they were uncertain about what was going to occur. Was Cain going to hand over the men? Was she going to call action stations? Was she just gonna execute them without mercy? Was a civil war essentially going to break out between elements of the military

I always loved her acting. Ever since her days on Star Trek TNG.

Oh yeah I swear the president even comments on this saying she assumes the Pegasus would win but Adama cuts back with not counting them out just yet. May be remembering wrong but honestly yeah the Pegasus was literally the most advance design of Battlestar in the fleet. The pinnacle of colonial military technology. She could absolutely destroy the Galactica

@@gdfgaming9378 good point - I read it somewhere, canon resources I think, that the Galactica line of Battlestars were effectively built to last (like tanks) while the newer ones were more offensive orientated. This kinda makes sense, when Lee takes command of the pegasus it's close to being annihilated by 2 basestars, even leaving New Caprica Pegasus doesn't last too long when Galactica has faced similar odds and survived. I don't think Galactica would be destroyed quickly, rather her outdated fleet of birds would be eradicated and she would be disabled then forced to surrender. Adama would then be captured and executed

Sorry to say but when a fleet Admiral steps over the line like she did. It is the worst mistake in a military career. But when you only have two Battlestars. You have to do what you gut say and do it. Adama war right. Cain was wrong.

Galactica was designed for ship to ship fighting, like Adama says himself "Like an old ship of the line duking it out". Pegasus was a carrier first, battleship second. Sure she had the battery on her bow but she was weak, Galactica a 40 year old bucket lasted minutes in the centre of 3 basestars and managed to jump out. Pegasus was taking critical damage before it rammed the BaseStar. Adama had this fight. Glory to the bucket....a grand old lady

@@mgDuckyyy Pegasus is also designed around its systems being networked. I can imagine whatever jury rigged systems they set up to function with unnetworked systems lowering the combat effectiveness of the Pegasus quite a bit.

Preaching to the choir there, my brother who wasn't big into scifi stuff unless it was Star Wars and Halo he was watching this with me and seeing that blank screen with "to be continued" had both of us on our feet screaming at the TV. That build up to that point when everything was about to get real and to have that cut off right at that point hurt like hell. Worst of all had to wait months for the second half of the second season.

His predecessor was executed right in front of the entire CIC by Admiral Cain, after which he was advanced to executive officer. That has to rank up there with the fear of fighting a sister Battlestar.

The mental gymnastics Cain went through to justify herself. Detached duty. The president is in formation with your ship. The legislature with her. There is nothing detached about this.

I'm almost an old man and I fully agree. The whole Pegasus arc in BSG was pretty much the very peak of TV entertaiment in general. 👌

Couldnt agree more. So many layers to the relationships, the why and what and tthe more you watch it the more you peel off. Phenomenal writing and acting.

@@ofidiotabagista5259 Yes, New Caprica & the Final Five reveal is where it started to get bogged-down in contrived storylines that became increasingly difficult to buy. Luckily, Ron Moore read the writting on the wall and ended the series before it became self-parody. He also provided a satisfying ending to the series, which the Glen Larson version failed to provide (except for Galactica 1980's final episode, the return of Starbuck - brilliantly re-created in the new series, replacing the Centurion with a Raider.)

@@PeBoVision I don't really think the ending was satisfying, especially with Starbuck and Caprica&Dr being just explained away as supernatural beings. But it is indeed a better fate than most neverending series have.

And,since she was an admiral,Kane had to do what she had to. 2 alphas,eventually one of them had to go. Michelle Phobs played the %%%% out of Admiral Kane tho !!! Sooo tough,intelligent and no-non-sense officer,she's dang good actress.

I hated seeing Pegasus wrecked during the Exodus from New Caprica. It was an example of the artists that designed the Vipers, the Cylon Base ships and all of the other vessel's.

@@charlesmcgehee3227 I hated that too. Unfortunately, with it being a remagine series, it did have to stick with some of the original plot... And the rather abrupt loss of the Pegasus is one of them. At least we got to see it for decent amount of time.

And look at the CIC - _Galactica_ is already at Action Stations and I bet it was Tigh that gave the order before Adama got there

@@B3B3TTER a few BSG fans were furious back then when they gender swapped Starbuck and Boomer and I admit I was very hesitant at first after growing up with reruns of the old Galactica and couldn't quite understand why they would even do a remake and why they would make Starbuck a woman.. et cetera - but the writing, the dynamics between the characters.. all of it worked out and I was so in love with the new BSG (not necessarily with all the characters but they grew on me) from the very first episode/pilot that by the time we got to the Pegasus I've basically forgotten all about the old BSG (which had a few serious episodes but was a product of its time, really) and this scene right there, the power play between Admiral Cain and Commander Adama, the different motivations of the characters with the stakes being high, the camera work, Bear McCreary's soundtrack perfectly setting the tone, the acting of everyone in this scene but especially Olmos and Forbes is phenomenal.. this few minutes give me the chills everytime I watch it and you can empathize with the characters. It's perfection. One could argue that the overall premise of the series is too religious or it's a cop out somehow but I'm an atheist and for me it's one of the best Sci-Fi shows out there.. up there with Babylon 5 and Farscape (and Person Of Interest if we count this as Sci-Fi).

@@unclereaper The reason why BSG worked and so many shows that just decide to take your favorite stories and remake them with female characters in most/all key roles is that they gave some thought to making these characters real people and not just another "as-a-woman" who needs to beat you over the head with her womanhood despite it not making any sense whatsoever in universe. Apollo, Starbuck, and Boomer are not the same characters as Lee, Kara, and Sharon, even if those 2003 series characters have callsigns of the 1978 character names. Which isn't to say you can't do the "as-a-woman" character badly. Marvel's Agent Carter did the badassery as a woman _because_ her superiors presumed that a woman couldn't even dream of doing the things she did. And she used it to her advantage. But nobody doubts that Kara or Kat can be an excellent fighter pilot. They have nothing to prove to anyone. Unless it be the proving to themselves which of them is the better pilot (or coming to terms with the fact that they're both damned good pilots.) And since they aren't constantly telling us they have nothing to prove and then trying to prove women can do the job, they can spend more time doing it well. When Hollywood in general pulls their heads out of their asses and figure that out … maybe we'll get more Sigourney Weavers and fewer Brie Larsons. Or not and most of their as-a-woman characters will be STUPID and their stories unwatchable. Their choice.

Michelle Forbes has definitely come a long way from Ensign Ro, and she was pretty good then...

"Target the main battery for galactica, AND MAY THE GODS HAVE MERCY ON THEIR SOULS". Terrifying delivery of that line, shook me to my core as it was essentially a tyrant, in command of the most powerful ship that they had come across to date. Michelle Forbes nailed it.

@@knghtbrd it just shows that if the characters are written well nobody really cares about their gender as long as they're interesting, complex and have a good story arc. Their main character trait ist their gender. Starbuck had more balls than most main male characters but she had so many flawas it was coming out of her ears and she was constantly struggled with them. Brilliant writing and acting.

Which always reminds me of the story of her coming on set and being referred to as a Trek actor when in fact she had had tough luck finding work for so many roles because of being typecast because of her TNG episodes when she was much newer to TV.

Between her and Nana Visitor's performance in a single season-4 episode... The only thing that could have made BSG better, would have been more screen time for former Bajoran actors.

@@Keithustus Can you imagine if she actually took the role that she was intended to take in Deep Space Nine? Would be a shame to miss out on Nana Visitor, but seeing Forbes in her place would have been _fascinating_ .

Interesting that I first noticed Michelle Forbes in BSG even before Star Trek TNG where she guest starred as a Bajoran in a few episodes. Loved her acting as Admiral Cain and she made that character an antagonist that you'd love to hate. Brilliant!!

The only problem with it is that the establishing shot shows Pegasus far closer to the Fleet than that final shot. It irks me, but it’s otherwise perfect.

@@WildCharger maybe its a choice to show Galactica as the protector of the fleet and in this scene Pegasus as the agressor and threat to it?

@@Knuspermonster Regardless of the reason it happened, the fact is that the Pegasus didn’t just magically teleport away from the fleet like that while Adama and Cain had their falling out. It’s a logic inconsistency.

@@WildCharger It’s clear Adama would hunt them down. Another thing, if Cain backs down now, it shows she’s afraid and unsure. I doubt everyone on Pegasus was happy with her rule. Now shown she isn’t the one with power, a subordinate could frag her, and then take command of Pegasus to surrender it to Adama. She needs to engage Galactica if it comes to fighting, otherwise she’s a coward who’s afraid of an old man and a half effective Battlestar.

I thought leaders were supposed to send each other 140-character messages with many spelling and logical errors.

It's not really an order. It _is_ a polite request, just done while making it abundantly clear that you're ready to use force. In negotiation that's a subtle but important distinction. He's forcing the issue, but giving the Admiral a way to deescalate the situation. Adama shows a lot of restraint like this throughout the series.

This scene hit on all thrusters! With 3 different sets this was likely an entire day of filming given set up time and rehearsals.

Back then Cally was a likeable character, and not that crazy b**** she developed into :(

I don't remember any other cliffhanger in television they had me on the edge of my seat quite like this one. Because no matter who wins, humanity loses.

All I knew for sure was that Helo and Chief Tyrol would not be killed. This particular set of action's was really the first real step toward the bonding of Human and Cylon. I was so glad they stopped Sharon Valeri from being raped and harmed worse. Then of course Callie shoots Sharon to death but it was still a first step.

@@williamcostigan91 Lot's of Sharon's die as well as the other "model's. The whole "downloading to another body" concept. An the notion that A.I. developed that tech is a great component of the story.

Adama doesn't flinch. Olmos has a great face. A Charles Bronson vibe. "I'll push one button and blast you to smithereens" Then sip a coffee. Then he will tear up over the love of a friend or family member. I love other scene's, like when he is boxing with Lee and then with the Chief. I saw no stand in actor's.

And accompanied by that FRAKKING BRILLIANT SCORE!

I have watched it, Binge style well over 10 times and still love it.

I've rewatched the series more times than I can remember, but watching this clip today was the first time I really took notice and appreciated the cinematography when Cain and Adama are talking. The way the camera moves just elevates the intensity. It's as if nothing else is in focus except for them and their exchange; a sense of motion, like we're caught in the current of a whirlpool with no way to avoid the oncoming shipwreck. It was wonderful, and it makes me want to rewatch the series all over again.

Circling them slowly and then faster and faster helps to portray ton the viewer the rapid escalation of the situation. So clever.

When BSG was good, it was fucking amazing. Unfortunately the writers didn't have a clear vision for the story. That and the main characters acting like hormonal teenagers in a soap-opera really brought the show down. Babylon 5 and The Expanse still win out overall in my book.

Adama is a wartime, seasoned Battlestar commander, according to the storyline. I'm sure he can really rain war on anyone attacking his World. He showed that he was willing to go to war over 2 of his men.

Just Imagine the reaction from the Civilian Fleet, especially Colonial One and the Astral Queen

The Expanse for a time seemed to be marketed as the next BSG but it doesn't come close for me. BSG has such better acting and characters that I could watch them do anything. The Expanse you're more interested in the events happening to the characters then the characters themselves.

@@equivalentexchangeisalie5726 I agree that the Expanse is more plot than character focused, but to me Expanse is a lot more cohesive and rounded. BSG was a product of its time and old TV show tropes, budgets mad eits quality a bit fluctuating (although S4 of Expanse is also a slog). At its ending it also leaned on spirituality more than I would have liked. So the Expanse edges out a bit, especially the books. And I also think that Holden and his crew are more template characters for the readers/watchers sake. But in the "secondary" characters we find complex and intriguing characters like Avasarala, Bobbie, Duarte or Drummer. I also consider the expanse a hard scifi due to it more or less obeying the laws of physics and thus shaping the universe, characters and plot. BSG is more like a space adventure.

@@Mickekzon Product of its time how so? It dealt with very timeless themes. If you mean because of its comparisons to the US war on terror and the war in Iraq, that contributed to some of its best writing. Also, what tropes? BSG was ahead of its time for sci-fi and TV in general. And the show did a really good job with the budget it had. The spirituality aspect was partly due to the writer's strike but you're right. But again better actors/characters elevated the material. Baltar being the head of a religious cult was more interesting then anything an Expanse character even at its best writing ever did. Template characters aka self insert characters meaning they're bland and generic so anyone can place themselves in the role. You just proved my point. The secondary characters are better but still not on the same level of even minor BSG characters like Kat. The genre of sci-fi is down to preference. BSG is hard as well but not completely since it has religious, military and romance themes.

The respect and care he shows for his crew and fleet is the reason why he is totally respected by his crew and those who know of his action. Caine commands obedience but no respect, I think if this standoff actually turned hot, the pegasus command would have mutinied because Adama commanded true respect and was a strong leadership alternative. I don't think the XO would have started the mutiny, probably someone else, but the entire command deck would quickly follow and the XO would assume command. Thats the power of good leaders over tyrants, even if scared into submission by a tyrant, if an alternative leader who acts in the best interest of people rises, it becomes a matter of time for when the tyrant is overthrown.

Adama has a full load of planetary bombardment nukes that I would guess have a similar yield to the ones used against the colonies. The pegasus, being in drydock at the time, at least has some ship-to-ship nukes but not the full load that the Galactica is armed with.

Honestly, watching this scene, I feel as though the pegasus' crew is on the tipping point of mutiny, the looks from the entire command deck when Caine orders to launch the alert fighters is so cold and really fed up with this sort of behavior, but of course they're terrified. It would just take one person on command deck and that would be enough to have the entire command deck mutiny Caine and allow the XO to call off all fire and hail the Galactica. He'd have the full support of the crew and Galactica. I don't think the pegasus would allow Caine to doom another human fleet, especially when they have an alternative leader in Adama

@@noahfenech3369 Did you see Razor? Her previous XO refused an order and she shot him in the head in front of everyone in CIC. And they were friends. I think they all know the first person to make a peep gets it.

Galactica is also several orders of magnitude TOUGHER than the over-engineered nightmare that is Pegasus, primarily due to actually being designed for this kind of slugfest. Add to that the morale differences between the crews, and the fact that Galactica's "Too Angry To Die" factor rivals Warspite herself, and I'm calling it a victory for Galactica. And that's before you realize that some of the people who are the most fanatically loyal to Adama are already aboard Pegasus

(I'm hearing this second-hand, never actually saw it myself) Apparently there is some extended universe material that A)The Mercury Class Battlestars were overengineered and not as good in a straight up fight as they should have been and B) Cain was put on one because she had political connections but couldn't do so much damage on them. Apparently she was so rigidly by the book that she could never win any of the battle simulations or exercises

I think it was implied at some point that Cain also had a civilian fleet but the Pegasus pretty much plundered their resources and left them stranded somewhere. Adama knew that Cain would do the same again. She was cannibalising long term assets for short term survival.

Adama is loyal to his crew. Period. He is willing to challenge pretty much anyone than break that.

@alexh3974 Like Cavil said: "That's a touching but not very convincing idea." No sane commander would put his entire ship and crew in direct danger just to get two men back. He wouldn't even be commander in the first place with that kind of mindset. BUT things change if he's taking into consideration not the lives of two people but the future of the entire human race (or what was left of it).

@@alexh3974 True, but as OP said, the precedent of letting a pirate queen take over is not a good one. Cain abandoned Humanity before, she’ll do it again.

That is something very special about this whole series. 3 Hour Pilot. 4 long seasons. And Razor. (90 minutes I think?) So much work went into this. show. It easily falls in league with SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.

@Fabian Kirchgessner I respect that too. I loved them all so can't pick a favorite. Sure is great seeing so many fans of BSG. I watch it over and over and still love it.

There's such a difference between the reactions of the two crews; it's great to see. Pegasus crew look horrified at Cain, Galactica's look determined. Shows the difference in leadership.

Yeah, the show never gets better than with this arc. Season 2, ep 9-12, is the peak of the show. It never makes it back to this point.
