So for the character's backstory, you have this: You're a Crusader named Theodore who fought with King Louis IX of France during the 7th Crusade. You left behind a mother and daughter (whether it's your mother or your daughter's mother is not stated). You died in 1252 years after the birth of Christ (Jesus was really born sometime during 6 B.C. to 4 B.C. but they probably mean you died in 1252 A.D.) during the end of summer (or late in the day during a summer day, it's hard to tell which they mean). You were killed by Abu Al-Kindi who fought for his city of Jesusalem (as it had fallen to the Muslims during the 6th Crusade). You died at the base of Jerusalem's walls. As Jerusalem wasn't under full-scale assault by the French in 1252, you were either a scout or a lone wolf committing suicide by cop. Your soul is now in purgatory, but as a twist, instead of being cleansed of sin by fire, you have to fight your way out and save your own soul with cunning and by selflessly saving all the souls tripped down there with you. Either that's you on the horse or that's someone looking at you as you died. Honestly did not expect such a deep backstory from this game.

But what happens when we look a little deeper? The man who killed you was Abu Al-Kindi; seems random right? Well I think it may be BUT he was a real person. But.... he was dead long before the First Crusade and he was a scientist, philosopher, mathematician, and overall intellectual figure. Not a fighter. So that is probably a latent resentment of a college student who hated having to learn about him and snuck him into the game as a little "Fuck you for making me learn!". How about the other answers from the cave? (and if you expect me to actually play this game and find them you are sorely mistaken!) Your name is Theodore, you died in 1252 "in the waning summer sun" at the foot of Jerusalem's wall far from home. Also you are damned to Hell (ggwp). So what does this all mean? Well Theodore is a very specific spelling of the name used by only two languages: French and then, thanks to the Normans, English. So that narrows it down to you being either English or French. 1252 happens to fall nicely into the Seventh Crusade which was, funny enough, led by the King of France. One issue: They never reached Jerusalem. That's All Folks!

There's a secret ending if you go back into the game after beating it

I like how the ending puts you at the outside of a wall, laying on your back, looking up. In the cave, they said you died outide of a city wall. Pretty much, what happens is that your soul went back to your moment of death, and you went Heavenwards instead of being damned. It's likely that your character was never truly damned in the first place, but was sent to hell as one last crusade for you to embark upon, a crusade against Satan himself. One last quest to save those who would later be trapped by pony island, before you could finally attain the glory of Heaven you rightfully earned.

I think it's amazingly funny how the game goes 'YOU KILLED JESUS' and Mark's first instinct is to laugh this is great

As SOON as I saw the puzzle break, i could only think that lucifer is trying to get the player to FIX the game to his liking by hiding the purpose of code behind the puzzle.

I think the guy you play who's playing Pony Island is actually a Knight. The Crusader secret "character" in the world map, after Lucifer gases you, and you wake up, there is a knight helmet in front of you as you get up, and the ending after defeating Lucifer, you wake up in front of a castle, the two spires and the wall.

The writing in the corner of the screen says: "Credit where credit is due" in comic sans, papyrus, and wingdings fonts respectively. It is a reference to Undertale, and the 3 fonts belong to the 3 skeletons, Sans, Papyrus, and W.D.Gaster (wingdings gaster). I believe he is crediting Toby Fox for the glitch and time manipulation idea.

The Asmodeus.Exe moment is genius, it’s so meta and fools you so many times. He mentions “Look at Me” but the game pulls your attention away with colours, fake game crashes, fake steam messages which somewhat are similar to that other game. (it had that girl and pulls up a blue death screen)
