As an Englishman and a rugby fan I remember that day with mixed feelings, I thought it was entirely fitting that Ireland won convincingly but at the same time was hugely disappointed with our performance. Croke park became a fortress that day. A great game in a great venue, full marks to the GAA for allowing it.

Beating the All Blacks was a bit special but nothing compares to the comprehensive demolition of England Rugby in the GAA's magnificent Croke Park stadium. Never has a victory over the English been so paramount, and rarely has an Irish win been so beautifully executed. It was one of the most heroic and memorable performance of all time from all of the Irish players. Dempsey; Horgan, O'Driscoll; D'Arcy; Hickie; O'Gara, Stringer; Horan, Best,Hayes; O'Callaghan, O'Connell; Easterby, Wallace,Leamy. Substitutes - Trimble;Paddy Wallace; Boss;Flannery; S.Best;Neil Best; Mick O'Driscoll. Ronan O'Gara had 100% success with his kicks, as did Paddy Wallace. My namesake Girvan Dempsey scored the opening try, others followed by David Wallace, Horgan and Boss.

It was a day to be proud of... Never in my experience has any anthem been met with disrespect. A proud moment indeed. Sean Kelly and all of the GAA people with sense and reasoning deserve some kind of award for building a bridge that no engineer could possibly manage. After all, we had our proudest sporting moment as a result.

You are absolutely right. I think rule 42 was and is a sham. Imagine the outrage today if an Irish sport was banned from a field in England or the FAA decided that Irish players were not longer allowed play in the English league. We Irish are sometimes long on memory and short on sense, we want everything, but were not inclined to give anything. We criticize the English but expect them to defend us in a time of need.

Rugby was NOT the first foreign sport to be played in Croke Park. American Football & Boxing (Muhammad Ali) took place there years ago. Also the GAA was quite happy to have Rock concerts in their "hallowed ground" together with the drug taking that goes with such concerts!

@johneharold the ban wasn't regarding foreign sports, just english ones. Hallowed isn't supposed to be interpreted in the religious sense, it's a figure of speech. Drug taking hardly comes into it. Do you suggest banning rock concerts?

@waaeaa good to see you looked it up. Anyway, would really hate to be you, I doubt you enjoy life very much. I along with a great deal of our fellow Irishmen am an emigrant, so I tend to view immigration differently. You see things from just one side and as long as you do that you're never really going to be happy with much. Stop whinging and carry on....oh and by the way, enjoy the Rugby! Great multi-cultural sport that it is! ;)

@waaeaa you need to look at why a minority feels the need to close itself in and try and acquire strength in numbers. When Irish emigrants found themselves constantly judged soley on the fact that they were Irish, they formed Ghettos, South Boston, Shepards Bush, Hells Kitchen etc. They became notorious and dangerous places to go. With time, and mixing, people learned about the Irish, that we're not all alike and they opened their minds. Everything starts small, even hope, do the research

Hurling and gaelic football are played there and these sports sellout the stadium 4 or 5 times a year and nearly fill many times more. The GAA owns the pitch and have a club in every village in ireland and its membership is 800 000 making it the biggest sporting org and NGO in the country. It has traditionally been antibritish and british soldiers massacred 14 civilians in that very stadium. So naturally they were reluctant to have british games and most especially having GSTQ sung there. So it was a huge step forward for them to allow these games to be played there

If the truth be known, I dont think its a case of the English feeling superior to the Irish, but the Irish feeling inferior to the English. And for the life of me, I never understood that. When the fiasco of the Italian presidency of the European Union was coming to an end, it was English newspapers, with a huge sigh of relief that said Europe was now in a safe pair of hands (referring to the Irish) Maybe our biggest battle is yet to be won, that of our own inferiority complex.

@waaeaa crime is a problem, it's a part of human nature and is generally a result of poverty and frustration. Of course some of the points you make are valid. You seem to be confused as to what a bigot is but lets not get into that for now. I personally don't care what colour a person is as long as they behave in a rational manner.

@waaeaa "Irish who go there now do not form such gangs and haven't since those days."...are you absolutley sure? What are you basing this on? A little misguided I would say. My brother in law is ex DEA, right up there with the blacks and colombians you have the Italians and Irish. You could also look at the corruption in our government over the years...or is that not crime for you? It's what's contributing to the state of affairs at the moment in Ireland

@waaeaa sidestepped what issue? The inexistant communist regime in Arabia? Come on, you haven't really made any valid points. You take one sided statistics and run with it. Races have been mixing the world over since time began and that if we look at the percentages the Irish population has one of the highest emigration rates of any country over the last 50yrs. As an Irishman, each to his own sounds quite silly. As to pointing out that you seem to be whinging, not exactly an attack now is it?

762SLR762, Armitage should have been sent off. O'Driscoll ran into him because he cut off the shortest route to th ball. That's illegal. Care was sent off cos he tackled marcus horan in a ruck whenhe was standing up with his back turned to Care. It was a disgrace. The 2 times ye've played in Croke Park ye've made an absolute disgrace of yourselves. Whereas we welcomed ye into a ground where the British army murdered 12 people and wounded 60. So in terms of maturity, Ireland is superior.

All Irish people in the world come back to Ireland? No inter breeding? Where does that leave my family? Does that mean that my wife shouldn't be allowed to move to Ireland if she so pleases? It's ridiculous, it begs insult as an argument. I feel like I'm arguing with a 2yr old, not an attack Waaeaa, but as you say yourself, each to his own(opinion)

Sorry you will have to do better than that, Hurling is on a different planet to cricket its all Instincts thats why you only can learn it from an early age.Anyone that sees it is totally captivated by it. Hurling is also oldest field game over 3k years. Gaa the governing body is something you will not find the like anywhere. To kick a ball with one’s feet has been done since time immemorial. The Egyptians played a game which involved only their feet, not hands, the Chinese did and the Greeks did. Probably even before their time our ancestors played ball games with their feet, but did not leave any written evidence. Soccer in its modern form is an English invention. The English codified soccer in its modern form, creates leagues etc. For this they did not build on other cultures variants of soccer. Thus modern soccer is an English invention.
