"Next up; Suffolk where in 2009 we met driveway layer Eddie Green. This time expert Mitch Westwood was on hand to comment on Eddies driveway laying skills. And they weren't pretty. Whilst watching Eddies work he told us that he'd weed killed and sealed the pathway before lying the tarmac -- but he hadn't.
Mitch explained: " The consequences of not doing those two things is that the algae and the dirt are going to be back pretty quick and within three or four weeks the whole thing is going to be dirty, grubby and covered in weeds again".
We confronted Eddie Green and he used some choice language telling Matt to" get a proper job" before speeding off.
But in March this year Eddie got another rude awakening when Suffolk Trading Standards prosecuted him for breaking customer protection laws and lying about being a limited company. He pleaded guilty to both counts and got an 18 month conditional discharge for each offence. He has had to forfeit all his signage, leaflets and pay £1000 costs."

How many victims actually check up and do some research into anyone you intend to employ . Roger Bisby interviewed a silly man that kept giving his ‘ builder ‘ for money up front to his men . I did a massive drive, loads of patio and hard work. Took me two days to get it all done and I applied weed killer after pulling out all the weeds. I earned 100 quid for the whole thing.

Asphalt can be successfully installed over concrete but due to the characteristics of each material, you may not be happy with the long-term results, as the asphalt will ultimately crack in the same manner that concrete does.

Back in the early 1980's we had our drive done by some Irish fella's, job wasn't too bad at all, all areas shuttered up with 1 inch wide by 6 inch deep wood, securely driven into the ground, good bed of hard core then the tarmac with white chippings thrown about, to make it look nice like, couldn't fault the workmanship and was nice and level, hard standing was big enough for 3 cars, charged us £120 and took nearly all day. Same chaps went to a bungalow about 20 metres from our house and tarmaced a small one car hard standing, hard standing was in need of clearing and de-weeding, owner of the bungalow was a pensioner and paid them up front as he was going out, when he got back his hard standing was done, the edges wasn't chuttered up and the base had not been cleaned off and had bumps of tarmac everywhere, the stumps was where the tarmac was over the weeds..... Me dad asked the pensioner how much he paid and the cost was £900, straight away my dad knew they'd ripped off, an easy prey as he was going out, so they jumped at the chance and buggered off within half hour of laying the tarmac. Dad phoned the Police but there was nothing they could do because we'd not noted the reg' plates down.

Why can you tarmac over concrete , surely its harder and stronger than type 1 ?

You can with a proper bitumen primer coat and steaming hot lay tarmac. This guy looked like he was just putting a pile of cold lay macadam straight on bare concrete. It will not get any adherence to the surface and all crumble to pieces within a year. Plus the levels when he blends up to the path, you can't just hump it up with no captive edging and hope it stays there. The pros were probably looking for the surface level to be taken down first, to allow the tarmac thickness to make all outside blend levels with surrounding area and drive lead-in etc. Also the concrete needs to be sound with proper joints etc. to minimise the risk of cracking into sections.

Hell no it aint, crushed, rolled concrete is normally used then they lay tarmac on top and roll that in then put liquid tar emotion along the edge by road, adjoining paths

It’s not the best practice but not totally unacceptable, the problem with laying wearing course tarmac over existing concrete is that without a liquid tack coat applied before the black goes down, moisture can get between the concrete and tarmac. When this moisture freezes in winter it can cause the tarmac to lift and crack. That bloke doing that tarmac job may of only priced for overlaying on the concrete, and the slow start May of been down to the rain, you shouldn’t overlay tarmac on a wet concrete surface.

If the ground under the concrete is not solid the concrete will crack, along with the tarmac on top. Prevention is better than cure
