Thankfully not all carpet cleaners are like this!! To find your local 'Professional Carpet Cleaner' please visit the National Carpet Cleaners Association's website at www.ncca.co.uk or call office hours on 0116 271 9550
The Rogue Trader's Team recorded this video for the BBC's Watchdog Television Programme. The Rogue Traders have been investigating some of the unethical carpet cleaners in the UK for using 'Bait and Switch' to sell their services.
Unfortunately every industry has a few 'bad apples' and these so-called 'carpet cleaners' are starting to give the professional carpet cleaning industry a bad name. However, 'Bait and Switch' selling is only the start as often the cleaning is very much questionable at the best of times and you run the risk of long-term damage to your carpet.
Being endorsed by the UK's Government under the 'TrustMark' scheme of approved service providers the NATIONAL CARPET CLEANERS ASSOCIATION (NCCA) are the only nationally recognised trade association dedicated to the cleaning of carpets, hard flooring and soft furnishings.
How 'Bait and Switch' Works:
To read our full report go to natcarpetcleaners.blogspot.co....
BAIT AND SWITCH STEP ONE:
Get the more expensive product that HE really wants to sell in front of the customer. In this case, showing the customer two test patches to demonstrate the difference in quality between the two levels of clean. By doing this they hope to entice you into 'upgrading' your cleaning service.
BAIT AND SWITCH STEP TWO:
The technician explained that if we did go for the £8.99 service it would 'make your carpet look worse'. Amazingly, it's true! If your carpet is dirty the service that this type of company advertises for £8.99 could make your carpet appear worse because it brings the deep down dirt to the surface as the carpet dries. The Carpet Cleaner told the 'customer' that for the £8.99 clean, they don't even spray any 'shampoo' on your carpet first. In other words they only use water.
BAIT AND SWITCH STEP THREE:
Close that sale! It's time to raise the question of what the more effective - but more expensive - clean will actually cost. A crystal clear comparison is what's needed here, especially seeing as it's be given to an elderly lady on her own. But as you can see in the video this is an unethical person, using unethical tactics, so instead the vulnerable customer was offered a lower quality maintenance clean for £8.99 and a deep clean for 49p a square foot.
The technician also offered a total of £167.90. That's nearly 18 times the amount the leaflet was trying to bait us with!
At this point the actress kindly thanked the carpet cleaner for his demonstration and asked him just to do the £8.99 clean he was initially invited into the house to do. It was then the technician showed yet another ploy at the company's disposal to help make that sale - 'THE DISCOUNT PLOY'.
'The Discount Ploy' required another award winning performance from the technician with him making a call to his office to ask for special permission. After his telephone conversation he came back, this time offering to do...
..."A beautiful deep clean with all the products and a stain shield warranty", all for "£126".
The carpet cleaner spent 56 minutes trying to sell a more expensive product before he finally gave up and reluctantly cleaned the two carpets for just £8.99. How much time did he spend cleaning them? Just 17 minutes.
How can you stop this from happening to you?
Well, it doesn't take much to work out a ridiculous low price like £8.99 isn't going to get the cleaner far. There are two old sayings to remember ...
"If it seems too good to be true ... it probably is"
and
"You always get what you pay for"
EIGHT questions to ask any cleaner before you allow anyone to clean your carpets...
(For our answers go to natcarpetcleaners.blogspot.co.... )
1. What method of carpet cleaning do you recommend and how is it done?
2. Will you remove all the stains from my carpet?
3. How often do you recommend I have my carpets cleaned?
4. What training have you had in cleaning carpets?
5. Will you give me a fully inclusive written quote?
6. What written guarantees do you offer?
7. Are you a current member of the National Carpet Cleaning Association?
8. Are you a member or certified by any other industry or trade bodies?
By selecting a member of the National Carpet Cleaners Association you can have the reassurance all our members are fully insured, trained to high standards and follow our Code of Practice to give you a first class service every time.

Every now and again I love winding up the crooks, they prey on the old or uniformed. I'm approaching 50 this year and a 6' ex biker. If they want to come in for a 'free' quote on something I could be interested in I'll check out the company first, If they are a con artist ( pretty easy to find out as I'm an electronics engineer and been on the internet for over 2 decades ) I'll invite them in. Do the same with the phone calls I get asking if my computer is running slow, or they want to refund my Sky charges. Usually have them blocked, but every now and again let them through just to screw with them. My feeling is that the more time I can screw with the con artists then the less time the have trying to pressure others into the con. It's just a hobby :)

Bait and switch only works on people who have more money than sense. To use this carpet or sofa cleaning as an example, you decide that their advertised price is a good deal. That is your budget. When the rep arrives and suggests a higher price for a better service, You ask what's wrong with the advertised service. If they say that service is no good, you show them the door. Unless you have more money than sense.

good words but most people feel manipulated uncomfortably and even threatened subconsciously into an awkward decision. as they said get they're foot in the door and bang the real sales agenda comes out. it would take only a strong person with good Morales to get these fuckers out the door. a weak naive sensitive old person might give in whilst being confused at realizing later on they've been conned.

Love watching these....I do have 1 thing to say though. Ok this programme is on BBC right? Every British household has to pay for the TV licence. For that we get access to BBC channels ok. 1 question and I think it's an important one. If I don't want to watch something on the BBC EVER can I refuse to pay the licence fee. I mean it's a service I don't want so why do we have to pay it? Isn't the BBC ripping people off right there?
@evilsmurf2k8

You supposedly need a licence to watch any live broadcast no matter what channel. Just go online to the tv licence site and choose 'i don't need a tv licence' Tell them you only watch catch up tv(not bbc iplayer) use netflix etc and hey presto no licence needed.

@@evilsmurf2k8 Won't work if you accidently switch channels,and land on the BBC. They've got a van with a little twirly thing on the top,and inside there is a crack team with equipment (like Mission Impossible,but even better),and they know exactly when you've strayed into their territory.They can even tell what you're thinking,and what you had for tea. Before you know it, a highly trained enforcement team, (a bit like ninjas,but even better), send your front door in, throw smoke grenades about, and cart you off to their interrogation centre. Here,they can do what they like,to get you to confess to watching live broadcasting, even interfere with your bottom, (a bit like in jail,but even worse), and then fine you a grand. In case you don't believe me, i have it from the horses mouth, as i don't have a telly license,and they sent me a very official letter,explaining exactly how they operate.I have to move base constantly now,never staying anywhere too long, and disguising myself,sometimes as a fat balding Chinaman,or a Corsican pirate, just to avoid their clutches......you have been warned.

@BlackRosesSmellSweeter
@BlackRosesSmellSweeter 2 жыл бұрын
The whole point is that it's a pressure tactic, sure YOU may be able to hold your own and say no, but a lot of people (especially the elderly) feel pressured into saying yes. Think about it, you've got some random bloke in your unlocked house telling you that the cheap option sucks, especially if you're weak and elderly you're going to feel pressured into going for the more expensive one. They don't state the cost upfront, by the time they tell you the expensive option they've already done a gigantic test patch, so you feel obliged to go for the more expensive one because otherwise there'll be a random clear patch in your carpet.
@formhubfar
@formhubfar 2 жыл бұрын
@@BlackRosesSmellSweeter I was a self employed painting contractor for 30+ years, now there is a difference between a quotation and an estimate, a quotation is the price you pay and an estimate is a rough guide yet should never be significantly higher than a quotation, its funny you mention the elderly as they (I would assume) would be the least likely to get fooled by a cheap solution, I mean if its too good to be true it often is right?, but hey.., you cry your naive tears and ignore the greed of others.
@BlackRosesSmellSweeter
@BlackRosesSmellSweeter 2 жыл бұрын
@@formhubfar cool, so following that logic, the estimate shouldn't be too different than the actual end price. I mean, if they knew the maintenance clean was shite, then they would've put something on the leaflet that explained that, and if they really disagreed with doing a maintenance clean because it could make your carpet dirtier, then surely the estimate would reflect what would get your carpet as clean as possible, no? So the estimate price should have been £100+ to £200+. Also, if they weren't advertising to make it as confusing as possible with the bait and switch in mind, the leaflet SHOULD HAVE said "clean two rooms FOR AS LOW AS £8.99", because that reflects that the actual cost could be a lot higher than the price they end up paying, depending on if they get extras. This companies tactics are a scam and it is no different than a Nigerian prince bait and switch on the internet.
