BBC Click’s Spencer Kelly spends an afternoon talking art, science, music and potatoes with music legend and godfather of ambient music Brian Eno.
His new app, Reflection, is a “generative” piece of music that changes every time you listen. In this extended chat we look in-depth at the rules and maths behind Reflection, where notes are altered depending on certain probabilities. We also hear some of Eno’s other ground-breaking generative work, including a very human robot drummer, some super-evil funk and a robot guitarist that could give Nile Rogers a run for his money.
We look at his sound and visual art, including 77 million paintings, get a sneak peek inside his notebooks, and find out how he invented the legendary Oblique Strategies cards.

What I really admire about Eno is that he never plays the 'wizard' role; he doesn't obscure what he does or adopt a twerpy persona. Spencer Kelly is trying to big him up as though he has mystical powers, but Eno wants to demystify what he does and let others know it's within their capabilities. He's obviously dazzlingly bright, but above all he extols the joy of having an enquiring mind.

That's the key to his genius, I believe....constantly being curious and never being afraid to make mistakes. It's inspirational, because anyone can foster those qualities, and be a little closer to genius.

I met Mr Eno years ago when I worked in a hifi store. I didn’t recognise him until he produced his credit card, he was generous enough to spend time talking synthesizers - or more precisely my ‘museum pieces’ as he described them, whilst explaining the principles of digital synthesis. He’d only come in to buy a pair of headphones. Thank you Brian.

au contraire, eno is under estimated. his outsider status and massive intellect has helped to create some wonderful moments in pop music and beyond. Granted in conjunction with others, but that's how to stay alive. most people have one idea on thier own. then they die from repetition of the same idea. we should cherish this man whilst he is still alive.
