In this moving interview, anti-racism pioneer Roy Hackett - who is now in his 90s - reveals the extraordinary level of racism he faced when he first arrived in the UK in the 1950s. Following the Black Lives Matter protests and the removal of the statue of slave trader Edward Colston in Bristol, some have called for a statue of Roy Hackett to be erected in its place. This interview was recorded in 2019.

We are all people, underneath the surface we are all the same, we all need hope and we all need love! Please remember that as we pass each other when we are walking along the pavements of Britain or anywhere in the world for that matter.

Until I began reading books about genetics ten years ago I assumed that, while no race was superior to another, race was a biological fact. Now I know it's a cultural concept. But even many victims of racism still don't know that scientific fact. Hopefully it's taught in grade schools now.

There is no such thing as reverse racism. Assumptions and stereotypes about white people are examples of racial prejudice, not racism. Racial prejudice refers to a set of discriminatory or derogatory attitudes based on assumptions deriving from perceptions about race and/or skin colour. Thus, racial prejudice can indeed be directed at white people (e.g., “White people can’t dance”) but is not considered racism because of the systemic relationship to power. When backed with power, prejudice results in acts of discrimination and oppression against groups or individuals hence racism.

You’ve got to be in it to change it that’s his words in other words he wanted to change this Country to meet his requirements that can’t be right. So we had to change our behaviour towards something we never wanted and never asked for madness

He sure would as his mother lived to 102 in Jamaica, he is my grandad and your comment is very inappropriate. He is not complaining, he is telling his life story. He didn't like the racism he received so he changed it and the law along with it and for that we are truly grateful and proud. Would you have the guts or brain cells to do this? from your comment that would be a no.

@@gaynaliciousx6070 He was fighting racism for me I would’ve said it’s clear I’m not wanted here better I go back home. Another thing when he says just because we are a different colour. That’s the sad thing he thanks it is about it colour. It’s got nothing to do with the colour it’s about their attitude and the way they live their life.

@@thomasreed49 You also have no brain cells and clearly didn't watch it or even know the story of the bus boycott🤦🏾‍♀️ When black people from the Carribean were invited to England by the monarchy to fix their country after the war, when they arrived their were signs in windows of houses to rent etc. that said 'No Blacks, No dogs, No Irish'. No blacks means no black people as you clearly don't know🤔 so it is about colour and also racist👌🏽nothing to do with your ridiculous, rude, stereotypical, racist comment about 'attitude and the way they live their life' absolute cheek✋🏽 there was no attitude but positivity, they just came into the country, excited ready to work and make a better life for themselves and their family👌🏽 Stop trying to change history, it is what is is🤷🏾‍♀️ My grandad is a legend that changed history along with the other bus boycott members if it wasn't about colour, race or racism why did parliament grant a whole new law called the 'Race Relations Act' to stop racism in the workplace🤷🏾‍♀️ Please do your research before you talk utter nonsense🙄
