Thirty years ago, Beijing's Tiananmen Square became the focus for large-scale protests, which were crushed by China's Communist rulers.
The events produced one of the most iconic photos of the 20th Century - a lone protester standing in front of a line of army tanks.
What led up to the events?

There were hints about this online, no mentioning in history class of course, at least at my time, I'm 30 years old. Sadly while we had the self awareness of being brainwashed by the government, the current generation might not even be able to realize this, nor care if they did because there are so much pressure just to live a decent life in the current economy and the government's propaganda keep people believing that democracy might not be the best system for China.

I was in 6th grade, and this was my first exposure to mass demonstrations and protests. We were too little to join in the march, but everyday after school I watched in huge excitement a sea of people marching down the street, mostly college students, young and hopeful, waving banners demanding political reform. At school our teacher would lead a daily discussion of domestic and international events. At home my parents would tune into Voice of America on the radio to hear about the developments. I remember seeing young students lying on Tianmen Square, weak from the hunger strike, medical professionals walking around them to provide assistance. I remember the Goddess of Democracy, which was actually quite shabby and not very tall. I remember Zhao Ziyang meeting with the hungry students. I remember the call of "students strike, workers strike, merchants strike" (学生罢课,工人罢工,商人罢市) on the loud speaker everywhere. I remember the sudden crackdown. Young students/workers got shot, little kids got shot by stray bullets. Young soldiers were dragged out of the tank and burned, their bodies hanging over foot bridges on streets. I cried with my parents at home watching the news. I cried with my teacher and classmates at school during our daily news review.

I’m sorry but I refuse to have sympathy for em, if I’m gonna be getting in hell it’d be against the government since I’m not selling out and shooting an average person. Sgt or Lt even? Many chinese students like me know this, and we can discuss about this freely. It's not a taboo, just not written in history book. Some of the leaders in this incident are stupid, they are manipulated by power behind. Democracy doesn't come like this. Actually, I don't see any political advantage of chinese democracy as in Taiwan. Taiwan's leader now is totally incapable, and riduculous. People's right is the most important thing, but country's decision should be decided by trully intelligent and long-sighted people. The mechanisim that select the most suitable leader of the country can best fulfill people's right within.

The student leaders of this incident have US visa before 64 happened. And none of them are dead ("thousands people died", lol). Now they are in US, France, Taiwan living very well. That's why many people say this is manipulated by western just like Color Revolution. People who died most are Chinese policeman, because they are not allowed to shot students. The student movement has actually opened the eyes of many Chinese people to the true nature of the Chinese Communist Party, helping them understand that this authoritarian regime will never stand with the ordinary masses. The so-called political reforms are merely deceptive. However, there is no need for discouragement; China will inevitably embrace democracy after undergoing significant political transformation.

This was absolutely harrowing. I was a teenager in the UK, following excitedly every article on the campaigners peaceful demands for more democracy. Those students looked so impressive and I started recognising names and faces in the crowds between news reports. Then China attacked. I thought the soldiers were being swayed by the students but no. The horror of watching it was equal to the horror of Russia launching its invasion of Ukraine and the associated deaths. Then student leaders started to disappear, or be arrested and given death sentences. It brought home the brutality of despotism and I have never stopped following current affairs and human rights since. I've seen my own nation (UK) behave no better in the Gulf Wars. I've seen a promising PM (Tony Blair) descend into becoming a war criminal. It's a very dark world and we all must never relent in our fight for global human rights. It's the one vital thing we must all strive for everyday of our short time on this earth - speak out, demand, assert that EVERY human being on earth have the right to live and the right to live free of tanks, bullets, missiles and despotism.

@@wyc7726 You just trigger my hidden trap! Get ready to answer some questions. Have you ever ask how Tiananmen square massacre got started? Or who started the killing first and why? Those are the very simple questions that I failed to ask when I was spammed by tiananmen square massacre videos from BBC and CNN. The comments section found on those particularly videos are filled with bigotry and hates. It's their words against you on a one-sided video. Anyway, I did some research and found the truth. It was so simple, yet very complex because you're trying to solve a puzzle with a missing piece. Here are the questions. There is a 95% fail rate when I asked other participants lol. Wanna give it shot? Here goes. 1. How long did the government allows the students to protest? 2. Can you tell me how many PLA soldiers got killed before the shooting begin? 3. How many vehicles got burned? 4. When the tanks start rolling in, which direction were they facing? 5. Which direction did the tanks faces when they meets Tankman? And finally 6. Why won't the Tank commander just run over Tankman when he try to stop them? But instead, the tank commander stopped, opened his tank hatch and had a chat with Tankman? BONUS points Try questions 1 - 3 on Kent State massacre. The Kent State shootings (also known as the May 4 massacre or the Kent State massacre), were the shootings of 13 unarmed Kent State University students in Kent, Ohio by the Ohio National Guard on May 4, 1970. The killings took place during a peace rally against the expanding involvement of the Vietnam War into neutral Cambodia by United States military forces as well as the National Guard presence on campus. Source en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kent_State_shootings And finally this. Mockingbird: Why all the 4 student leaders at the Tiananmen event are still alive now? Also so many students who participated were able to get a Visa to leave the country and now most of them live oiling the West. Why is it so easy for them to get out if the government was so brutal as you claimed? You think everyone is so naive that they will blindly believe whatever was claimed by BBC? BBC also claimed that 39 victims in the freezing truck in Britain were all Chinese without any evidence. And what really happened? No wonder. So as always when something happens that people do not want to think about. They just go into shock mode and denial. That's because there was never a "Tiananmen square massacre" per se. Props to the BBC for trying, although somewhat shyly, to correct a record that's been wrong for far too long. That phrase is just a journalistic shorthand that has become something of a myth over the years. Many journalists who were on the spot (i.e. Jay Mathews from the Washington Post, Richard Roth from CBS News and James Miles from BBC News) already stated outright that they misrepresented the situation at the time for a number of reasons, including that "Tiananmen square massacre" was a catchier phrase than "Beijing crackdown". But by doing so, they created the myth of a historical event that, simply put, never was. That's why the voice says "early morning, 4th of June. The soldiers moved into Tiananmen square. They dragged down the statue of the Goddess of Democracy, which had come to represent the protest movement. They sealed the fate of its failure." These words are not random. The version we've known so far was "early morning, 4th of June. The soldiers moved into Tiananmen square. They mowed down thousands of unarmed protesters with tanks and machineguns". And this version is pure fiction, yet our media have been taking THIS one for granted for decades. And so have we. Glad there's somebody at the BBC who's finally growing a spine. Our media cannot claim to be better than chinese media if they lie to the public. Only by upholding our values and seeking the truth can we save our democracy. No matter how inconvenient that may be. Even if, at the end of the day, we have to shamefully admit that the account the chinese government gave of June 4th's events is closer to the truth than our own (though I doubt theirs could have been entirely truthful either).

Let's just say it's a test to see how much you really know about the tiananmen square massacre and you're not being brainwash by the medias for all this years. It should be easy for you right? Here goes. 1. Can you tell me how many PLA soldiers got killed before the shooting begin? 2. How many vehicles got burned? 3. How long did the government allows the protesters to protest? 4. When the tanks start rolling in, which direction were they facing? 5. Which directions did the tanks faces when they meet Tankman? And finally 6. Why won't the Tank commander just run over Tankman when he try to stop them? But instead, the tank commander stopped, opened his tank hatch and had a chat with Tankman?

@@condorX2 Hello. First I need to say I want to have a rational discussion. We both don't use rude word because you know that this will not have any good result about each of us. First, I think that all of us excluding the soldier inside the tank will never know what the driver really thinking at that moment. The tank man also did not know what would the soldier want to do. You said the tank turned right. It maybe the soldier want to leave or he just want to pass through the tank man. Therefore, I think we should not focus to what was the next step of the tank. Second, we should focus on why the tank man stood before the tank. If he supported the government, if the government use tanks was a right decoded, I could determined that the man must not stand before the tank and try to stop it. Third, the news from IBTime also mention that a lot of protesters have bit the soldiers. I would like to tell you all the news I have seen also have mention. But the difference between IBTime and other news(excluding CCTV or other Chinese news because they only said what government want the people know) is they will tell you why the protesters did it. It is because the soldiers drove very fast and many people have been killed by the soldiers. This have bee happened before the protesters bit the soldiers. All the things need to see why it happen and this also is the main point.

@@derekng4872 Hi, I wanna share this with you, where I also shared it with my friend. Aww, cheers Robert for those kind words. It took me 20 years to understand the word empathy. Anyway, the reason why I used copy and paste is because you need to remember that this is an indoctrination outlet (China Uncensored.) And there is no way to get to everyone by talking to them by one one. I try and they just play strawman and deflect the truth. That's how indoctrinated a lot of them have become. I was once indoctrinated by westerner media too, particularly Tankman and Tiananmen Square protest and that was all I know. It was all changed when the HK protest got violence. What tip me off was seeing with my own eyes on how biased the Westerner media have become. They always report peaceful protest, while ignoring any violence scenes on all their reporting. When I try showing you the video evidence, your defense was that those videos were China state run media. Remember? It really break my heart to see myself in others for being so indoctrinated. No offense Robert. This motivated me to find the truth, even through I'm just a gamer. You can always check my profile to see my ad-free gaming videos. The HK protest really changed me. And now I realize how much westerner media able to influences us by simply showing what they want us to see. I remembered reading a line from a Ex-CIA: "It's easier to buy a reporter than to buy a newspaper." I've been researching tiananmen square massacre and I keep learning new things. Wanna see what I have learned so far Robert? I've learned a lot from my past mistakes (being indoctrinated by westerner media) and I'm passing on my knowledges. If you're willing to read my experience with an open minded. I'll be be happy. Here goes. If you watch a lot of tiananmen square old footages, you'll notice that those students were impulsive. They didn't know how hard is for China to get stable again after all the unrest (Civil Wars, invasion from other foreign powers and the culture revolution). Those students wanna be like the west and they want it in a hurry. So I wrote a small essay to give you bigger picture, plz me what you think. As you already know, everyone have been indoctrinated to remember the tiananmen square massacre by western medias, but none of them know how or what really happened before the shooting took place. Did you know there was a dozens of riots police got killed before the shooting begin? Those are the thing westerner medias don't want you to know. You can alway do a independent search. Did you also know there was hundreds of vehicles got burned before the shooting begins? Anyway, check out my little investigations. I've learned a lot after going through old 1989 footages in a day, while many learn nothing after decades. Check this out. What the hk protestors doesn't even realize is that they're being used by other countries to start tiananmen square 2.0. They're being mislead by fear and false promises. So I come up with an analyze. Please tell me what you think mate. It has help me understand tiananmen square a lot better. Why? Because hk protest and tiananmen square protest are very similar. I also understand why China censored it because that incident was all about sowing discords. It's very hard to get people to see the truth, but I'll try it anyway. Here is the things that many don't know about. Pretty much every protestors leaves the Tiananmen square peacefully that night, until they're on the steet, that's where a group of rioter start killing soldiers. I'll cover that in a bit. I'll try summarize it by others who have done their homeworks. GX Mei: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989_Tiananmen_Square_protests#Deaths_in_Tiananmen_Square_itself 'could not find enough evidence to suggest that a massacre took place on the Square itself' 'there was no bloodshed inside Tiananmen Square itself' 'did not observe any mass firing of weapons into the crowds of the square itself' 'most of the troops which entered the square were armed only with anti-riot gear' also www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/wikileaks/8555142/Wikileaks-no-bloodshed-inside-Tiananmen-Square-cables-claim.html ‘Wikileaks: cables from the United States embassy in Beijing have shown there was no bloodshed inside Tiananmen Square’ ‘Protesters who were still in the square when the army reached it were allowed to leave after negotiations with martial law troops’ Here is the elusive culprit that slip through our minds for decades. Amidat: The government let them sit there for 6 weeks. The FACT is that rioters began beating and killing soldiers... That's when the shooting started. I've verified about the soldier killing and its true and it can be found at the most unexpected place. (this video condemn China action, but it also contain the video evidence we need about the soldier killing.) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nZmogMR2ybKwm2w.html Just skip to 2:18 to see the dead soldier on the above video and not on this page. The rioters would have kill the journalist too if he didn't keep shouting that he's an American and showed his passport. Someone threw a rock at his head regardless and laughed at him. That mentally is strong on every social media discussion, if you disagree with a hk sympathizer, they'll cuss at you by calling you a 50c, a Wumao, a bot, a communist, and all sort of nasty names. Try verify it by playing devil advocate. Anyway, this might explain why there were bloody corpses outside on the streets and not inside the Tiananmen square. The attacking of soldiers, vandalizing buildings and burning things up remind me of the Hk protestors, which can found on this link. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mK5hZbibvtLQknU.html And here is a 70 year olds road cleaner being killed by violent protester in Hong Kong by hitting his head with an object. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qNd6qqui2pjGYI0.html They're so freaking similar. The only difference is that there is no hk police death yet. Here is a video where the Tiananmen square protestors went out safety. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/l-CAksqFtauwj4U.html And here are the eyes witnesses accounts of the incident. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fd17q5NjqNKtcWw.html Bonus find. 神州 Shenzhou: Tiananmen Square Massacre is a Myth propagated by the British. This video brought me to tears, I grew up in China having this piece of history hidden from me, my own parents lied to me when I wanted to know what happened. Seeing the footage of students my age, or probably younger, fighting, protesting on the street from 30 years ago is like watching a different race because uni students these days in China are spineless, leeches of their parents, empty headed, brainwashed, value-less... and the kids who are woke and want to get out to see the world have left and seek life elsewhere. This country that I once was brainwashed to love and believe is sadly going backwards and 30 years later, nothing has changed or improved, it’s just seem to have gotten worse, with Hong Kong losing its autonomous statues. The future of China is bleak and I just don’t see any changes likely to happen in the future,

I’m a U.S. citizen who visited Tiananmen Square in 2005. The tour guide warned us to keep quiet when walking around, and NEVER discuss the protest that occurred or we could face being arrested. I was there protesting, left Beijing a week before 4th June. In the morning of 4th June a classmate came back to school with a blood soaked jacket(the night on Tienanmen Square he helped to save injured civilians/students), hung it beside the door of our school eating building, some girls came back from the square cried saying many were died and piled to burning... We were astonished and rushed out to street protesting again. It started raining while we were sitting in front of the city hall protesting, some officials were recording video of us...

@@pinkcichlid we did hear, but many newspapers gave out opposite information showing support (it is not like in USA, all newspapers were controlled by government in China, even now), still many government workers, reporters, express organizations joined and stayed, some very high government leaders still supporting protesters. all those conflict info mixed, no one took the central government's announcement seriously. In a movement like this, hundreds of thousands students/civilians in Beijing, would anyone believe the soldiers would fire real bullets? Do all protesters(some rioters/looters) for George Floyd really believe the national guard/army would use tanks and shoot now? We neither then(to be accurate, many protesters had retreated already before that day).

@@mikey-highfive I can't sympathize what happened to you sorry. The naivety to believe a government would hand over control or give up their fundamental values because of protests is appalling. If you didn't like a government, the only way for it to give in is through war, no exception in the entire human history, and if you can't do that, your options are to compromise or leave.

@@mikey-highfive China changed many governments (or dynasties) over thousands of years, whenever the majority of the people hated the government a revolution would come. Revolution didn't come for you naive students in '89 because it wasn't the will of the majority, not then, not now. When we were in China we fantasized how beautiful Democracy was, now I've lived exactly half of my life in China and half of my life abroad, in my humble opinion, 天下乌鸦一般黑, 天上月亮一样圆,just different sets of pros and cons. Democracy is a series of empty promises for a party to get in control so its funders benefit, and Free Press is the true biased devil that stir people's peaceful lives and emotions for clicks and viewerships. China's govt has many problems, but it doesn't mean the opposite of your enemy must be your ally.
